What putting tip or putting drill do the pros use to practice their putting? If you go to any tour event, you will see them putting balls underneath a string. Here is a very simple and effective putting tip for putting drill to use on the practice putting green so you can practice like a pro. This or putting drill will help you hit your putts on the same line every time. You will need two 3-inch nails, eight to eleven feet of kite string or yarn will also work and a Sharpie and/or a range ball.
1. Identify a putt of ten feet or less that is a straight putt. It can be slight ly uphill but preferably the flatter the better.
2. Place one of the 3-inch nails behind the putting cup and on the line with direction you'll be putting. As you push the nail into the ground, make sure the top of the nail is high enough for your putter blade to fit under the string or yarn that will be attached.
3. Place the other 3-inch nail up to 10 feet on the other side of the hole from the other nail. The string will create a shadow on top of your intended line of your putt.
4. Tie the string or yarn to the top of both nails. Insure the string or yarn is tight enough so that the string doesn't sag.
5. With your Sharpie, draw a straight line completely around the center of your golf ball. Any of the tools for creating a line on your golf ball works best. A range ball will also work for this as well.
6. Set your golf ball down anywhere underneath the string. The line that you drew or the range ball stripe should be parallel with the string or yarn aiming at the putting cup.
7. Last, strike the golf ball. The goal is to have the ball roll underneath the string as the string shadows the line on your ball or range ball. This will require your putter head to slide underneath the string to be able to strike the golf ball solidly. If the line on the golf ball goes from side to side, then you did not hit the ball with the putter head moving at the target with a square face. If the stripe or line stays straight with deviating, your putter head did hit the ball with the putter head moving at the target with a square face
This drill will provide immediate feedback. If your not striking the golf ball correctly, then you will know it immediately as the line or stripe will become larger as the ball rolls on its side.
If you want to make this a little more challenging, you can take two golf tees and place them perpendicular to the string at the location where you're striking the golf ball. To insure you are striking the golf ball solidly, you want the tees to be barely wide enough for your putter head to fit through. It is like shooting at a smaller basket ball goal. Once you go back to the regulation size, it looks like a huge barrel. To build your putting confidence, you may want to give yourself a little more space for your putter head to fit through, but you should eventually move the tees as close as you can.
