Track your way to better putting

Do you know what distance you putt best from on the putting green? Do you know where you need the most work from on the putting green? The professionals on the PGA Tour are not the only ones that can track these stats. You can easily track these putting stats for yourself by keeping an extra scorecard. Within three rounds, you will have solid information on what you should be spending your time on while practicing your putting

Using a separate golf scorecard, you will record on each line: 1. How many putts were taken 2. The length of the first putt 3. Did you miss long or short? 4. Did you miss right or left? 

In just five minutes after your round, you can total the lines. Not to sound scientific, after three rounds you will have a good sample of information that will lead you to what you need to improve upon.

Here are some things you will want to keep your eye on as you gather your putting statistics:

You face is either opened or closed at impact if you are missing the putting cup more to one side or another. You can fix this by putting balls from just two feet from the hole on the practice putting green. In addition, hold your finish for three seconds. The good news is you really have to hit a poor putt to miss from this distance and more importantly you will bee able to see the line of the putt you hit. If your putting line does not improve, look into purchasing a laser pointer that will easily attach to your putter. Most are inexpensive and will give you instant positive feedback.

Take the hole away and hit multiple putts to the fringe. Your goal is to stop the ball where the putting green means the green's collar. Again it is very important that you hold your finish for three seconds. When a players has trouble with their lag putting, it is typically due to the putter re-coiling at the end of the stroke. Do this from different distances to improve your lag putts. This drill works on the speed of your putts.

Improve your putting by keeping your putting statistics just like they do on the PGA Tour. Keep track of your totals for a minimum of three rounds and the results will tell you where your practice time needs to be spent.
