Concession Equipment

If you intend to run your own concession stand, you have a lot of choices to make. First of all, you have to choose the size and type of your actual stand. It could be a large RV type trailer, it could also be in a building. The decision is completely your own!

Next you need to decide what kind of concession equipment you will need inside your concession stand. What is fun about that is that you get to decide what you would like to sell in your concession stand. When it comes to food selling choices for your concession, you can have fun with it! There are so many choices.

Of course there are the usual types of things you see such as, popcorn poppers. Something unique about concession stand popcorn poppers is that you can buy the ones that resemble movie theatre popcorn poppers. These units can give your concession stand a fun and inviting look, as well as providing a wonderful aroma.

Another usual piece of concession equipment are hot dog rollers. These units are heated and spin the hot dogs for multiple reasons. Though the spinning effect is for the purpose of heating the food, it will also get people’s attention. In addition to hot dogs, you may choose to sell hot, soft pretzels. Pretzels are a large crowd pleaser and the hot dog roller.

Another fun choice for your concession stand could be a cotton candy maker. Everyone loves to see those different colors of fluffy clouds. Those could also be used as an attraction for grabbing customer’s attention.

Whatever concession equipment that you may choose for your concession stand, make sure you make it professional yet inviting to your customers. You have to be professional for the sake of business. You also have to keep your concession stand professional for health inspections.

Size An Under Counter Refrigerator

Many times people do not think of under counter refrigerators when they are thinking of their own home. However, for those that live in an apartment or live alone, these appliances may be ideal. Not only are they an excellent space saver, under counter refrigerators can be a great energy saver as well.

How do you go about choosing an under counter refrigerator? First you need to consider the space in which you will put it in. You do not want to get the wrong size for your kitchen! You also need to keep in mind how much you can spend. Some under the counter refrigerators can be costly, only because of their size and the material they are made out of.

That is the next thing to think about. Depending on where your under counter refrigerator will be placed, you need to think about what type of material you want to choose for your appliance. There are fiber glass, stainless steel and even wooden options available. The wooden ones are great for creating a clean and organized kitchen look and can match the cabinetry in the rest of the kitchen.

The size of your new refrigerator will also depend on whether your appliance is being purchased for your home or for a business. If it is for a business than a medium or a larger appliance may be a wise choice. This is because especially in a commercial business, there may be a lot of people using that one refrigerator. However, if it is simply for personal use, a smaller one may be the better choice.

Where do you find them? How do you know which are the best? If you want to choose one that is a top or reliable brand, you can take a look at the products of Beverage Air. Consumer Reports is a monthly publication tests and rates the best quality appliances.

As commercial restaurant equipment can be expensive, you need to figure out what you can actually afford and makes sense for you facility. Some considerations that you will need to make include the size of your workspace and how much business or volume are you projecting to do? Depending on the answers to these questions, you will be closer to having the answers for your facility. Most commercial freezers start in the $1,000 range and can go up to $10,000 depending on the manufacturer.

Commercial Ice Machine For Businesses

Ice machines may sound like something simple but when you are choosing one for your business it becomes a little more complex than you may think. There are many factors you need to think about it. For instance, there is the area where you will put the commercial ice machine. This is an important factor, as commercial ice machines come in all shapes and sizes. Next you need to consider how much you would like to spend on an ice machine. Certain ice makers sell for a lot and some are more low-budget oriented. Many times the price of an industrial ice machine depends on what material it is made out of, what brand it is and what the ice machine does.

Your next decision needs to be what the ice machine will be used for. Consider your business and its’ needs. Is your business large? Is it small? What events or what people will be using your commercial ice machine? For example, if you have a country club or golf course, you may want to choose the bin-type ice machine. These machines will make a large amounts of ice all at once and store it in an ice bin. If your business is a restaurant you could also choose this type of ice machine. However, another good choice for those in the food industry is the commercial ice machine that makes smaller chips of ice. These are ideal for personal beverages such as fountain drinks.

Your choices for industrial ice machines are endless. There are numerous brands, such as Manitowoc, that come in a wide range of prices. Much of these depend on whether your commercial ice unit will be seen by others or not. It may sound ridiculous, but if your commercial ice machine is going to be out where customers see it, you want to buy an elegant and quiet machine. Buy what is best for your needs.

Stainless Work Tables - Clean Up Your Kitchen Or Work Area

When you are looking for a way to clean up your businessʼ work area, one spot is to look at the type of furniture you have such as purchasing some stainless work tables. Yes, the furniture. Your work space can tell a lot about yourself as well as your business. We all hear that looks are not everything, but in a professional setting, cleanliness plays a big role.

One way you can step up the look of your shop or kitchen area is by buying
stainless steel work tables. Not only are they extremely durable, they will give your work area a much nicer look. Not only do they give your facility a clean look, they can also give your work area a very organized look as well.

There are many different types of
stainless work tables. There are some that have a shelf underneath the surface, there are some that come with doors and you can even add drawers. Stainless steel work tables typically cost anywhere from $110 to almost $900. The price depends on the model of the work table you buy. The price also depends on the size of the work table. If you choose to buy some additions for your stainless work table, they will cost up and above the base price of the unit.

Though
stainless tables cost more they are well worth it. Stainless work tables are extremely durable. Though they can dent, it is very hard for that to happen. Stainless work tables also are easy to keep clean. This is important especially in the kitchen setting. You want to keep your area clean, not only for the sake of being clean but for inspections. This type of metal work tables can be shined up to give that extra professional look.

Q & A About Ice Machines

Ice machines or as they as also referred to as commercial ice machines are used in many different businesses such as restaurants, golf courses, country clubs, bars and office buildings. Here are some of the most common questions that VGS receives on these units.

How important is a water filter to the facility's ice machine?

A water filter will remove any odor as well as improve the taste of the ice by removing sediment, parasites, controlling calcium as well as hi-scale build-up. These factors also lead to a unit breaking down. Changing your water filter is important maintenance to do just as changing the oil in your car is important to its proper function. Depending on the amount of use that you have with your unit, the filter should be changed at least every six months.

Do I need a water-cooled system or an air-cooled ice machine?

As you can imagine there are advantages and disadvantages to each system. The air cooled units are easy to install and the purchase price is typically lower than a water cooled model. However, the air cooled units tend to be noisy and will give off heat which may not be desirable depending on the placement of the unit. A water cooled machine is also easy to install. A water cooled unit is also quieter and is typically more efficient than a water cooled unit. In some dryer parts of the country, you may be required to have a permit to run a water cooled machine.

With proper maintenance, how long can I expect an ice machine to last?

Again, the truthful answer to this question is, it depends. With that being said, most machines will last up to 10 years. Of course, this depends on if you properly maintain the ice machine as well as the water quality available and the amount of humidity in your area.

Commercial Ice Machine- What Size Do I Need?

More businesses than just restaurants use an ice machine or a commercial ice machine. However, many that open dining facilities be it a restaurant, bar, country club or golf course, do not know what their needs are going to be and how much ice that they will need to produce to take care of their clients during the high point or busy times in their business.

The common "guidelines" for ice needs from an ice maker are:

Restaurant ice needs are 1.5 lbs. per person
Bar or Lounge ice needs are 3 lbs. per person
Salad Bar ice needs are 30 lbs. per cubic foot
Lodging ice needs are 5 lbs per room
Catering ice needs are 1 lb per person

So with that being said, what else do I need to think about to determine how much ice I will need for my facility?

This is a question asked by many and we will provide some figures that are averages for proper ice levels. The real trick is to do the research and to do the math as every restaurant, bar, country club and golf course has different needs at different times of the day. Once the math and research is done to determine how much ice you will need, there are still other factors to consider. Before your purchase, you need to determine where the unit will be placed in the facility? If the ice machine will be installed near the kitchen area or any other area in which will be hotter than normal, the heat may drastically decrease the amount of ice that your commercial ice machine will produce. Another consideration is that a slightly larger machine never really hurt anyone. The extra money upfront can take a lot of pressure off of you and your staff at a later date. So it is important to weigh this against the challenge that you and your staff will have when you run out of ice at your facility.

Driving Range - Increase Your Revenues With These Easy Tips

Whether you are a driving range owner or you operate a driving range at a public golf course or a country club, creating more revenues through a good marketing plan takes a little brain power as well as some common sense. You can do this through implementing a marketing plan that includes purchasing the correct technology such as a launch monitor that will not break the bank, a competitive pricing plan as well as a referral program.

Referral programs – When most people hear the words referral program they immediately think complicated and expensive. It simply does not need to be that way. There are many different ways you can easily structure this. For every current member that refers a new "rack rate" member, you can place them in a drawing monthly, quarterly or even yearly. The prize for the drawing can include donations from vendors to a golf lesson or lesson package to a golf club fitting from your staff. Not only will you create excitement about the program but anytime your staff can spend with a member or customer it is a marketing opportunity. Your staff can ask questions of your patrons about hot topics to gather good and bad information that will help you improve your facility, inform your customers about new services, such as a golf launch monitor and inform your customers of new specials or programs available to them.

Launch Monitor – Purchasing a golf swing launch monitor will allow you to expand how creative you can become with your marketing plan. Not only will you be able to use the launch monitor to add credibility to your staff while they are administering a golf club fitting, you can also rent it out for corporate outings or events. The corporate outings and events can introduce your driving range, services and staff to a new group of potential customers.

Bounce-back coupons - A special offering a buy-two-get-one deal for a bucket of balls will encourage new and occasional customers to come back and use the facility. Allow your staff to give away tokens or coupons as a thank you for using your driving range. This will encourage your customers to return and spend more time and more importantly money.

Improve Your Snack Bar Or Concession Stand Revenue

The goal of any business is to keep the customer in or at the store as long as possible. If you do not offer any food, you are almost encouraging people to go down the road to eat. If you have food and drinks and can keep customers there to eat through a snack bar or concession stand, then you just might get them to hit another bucket of balls or buy another drink. Obviously this will increase your gross sales and should add money to your bottom line.

If you are space challenged and do not have room for a snack bar or concession stand then a vending machine would be the answer for you. Vending machines do not require any permits and you can set them up in a number of different ways limiting the initial cash out of your pocket.

The easiest way is to have the company provide the machine and the product and you get a commission off what is sold. There are also options where you can buy the machine and have the company place the product. The benefit of vending machines, he adds, is that they don’t require permits, much space or a lot of maintenance.

The next step to improve your snack bar or concession stand providing fountain drinks. This will need more space as well as drainage. In addition, you are going to have to be able to get water to the fountain. This could require some construction costs and there will be permits involved. However in the long run it will be worth it.

Once you have installed the fountain in your snack bar or concession stand, the transition to a candy rack and grab-and-go foods is very easy. In addition to the potato chips and energy bars, the suppliers are offering some very good prepackaged sandwiches and hamburgers that you just heat in a microwave. These products really have a good quality now and there is no major kitchen equipment required.

To help maximize food revenues in the snack bar or concession stand, golf courses and driving ranges can serve golfers outdoors by purchasing a grill. With the purchase of an outdoor grill to place near your range you can sell the smell of lunch.

Is The Golf Experience At Your Golf Course Or Country Club Where It Should Be?

I have had golf professionals of various golf courses and country clubs tell me they think the first impression of their facility is the golf shop, the driving range and even the first tee. We have all heard the statement many times. You only get one chance to make a first impression. So, where does your staff make their first impression at your golf course or country club? At no matter which golf course or country club that I have worked at, I have preached that it always began with the outside service staff, outside operations staff or some facilities even still call them bag boys.

Here are some tips to make the first impressions of your bag drop area consistently a good one:

• Your bag drop should ALWAYS been staffed. Put a system in place-if one of your outside service employees must step away that someone else is there to fill in.
• Outside service employees should be cheerful, well groomed and articulate.
• Outside service employees should be in the correct uniform including the proper name tag with pants pulled up.
• The job of your outside service employees is to warmly greet every member or guest who comes to the golf course or country club. Using the members and guest names should be mandatory. There are many tricks of the trade to learn names. Nothing builds loyalty faster than making customers feel like VIP's.
• Acknowledge every customer. If this cannot be done verbally then use eye contact or a polite gesture. No customer should have to stand around waiting to be acknowledged.
• Provide the outside service employees a daily events sheet near the time clock which explains the events for the day so they can communicate the correct information to the members and guests.
• As for the bag drop area itself, it should be clean and organized. This is a reflection of your facility. Bag racks should be painted regularly as well as the greeter stand or building you use.
• Keep in mind that this same area will also be the last impression of your facility. Make a good final impression, too. Every customer should hear a friendly "goodbye" and earnest "thank you" on their way out.

Implementing these ideas, many of which do not even cost any money, as well as presenting and setting these new ideas as the new standards will improve the golf experience at your golf course or country club.

John Boos - How the Butcher Block & Cutting Boards Started

John Boos was a blacksmith. Boos was asked by a local butcher to make him a wooden block. The butcher was intrigued about he could use a block in his kitchen after he saw how the block had absorbed the shock of Boo's hammer. That was the first of millions to be produced by the Boos Company. Once again proving that you just never know what will start a profitable business. With nothing but the best, John Boos cutting boards offer an array in style from the simple butcher block maple wood cutting board right on up to kitchen furniture.

The John Boos Company has been manufacturing hard maple butcher block products since 1887. The Boos products including butcher blocks, cutting boards and kitchen furniture are made to professional standards and are found in most restaurants, butcher shops and even the kitchen of the White House.

By the 1940s, butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Then World War II began. World War II was instrumental in changing the manufacturing philosophy of the management at John Boos and also the course of the business. The John Boos plant operated from a blacksmith shop until 1892 and then it moved across town, and began producing the Boos blocks, cutting boards and kitchen furniture as we know them now. Along the way they also become known as the Mercedes of wood cutting boards and butcher blocks.

End grain butcher blocks are built from short solid wood elements glued in such a way that only the end grain shows on both the top and bottom sides. As these elements are usually rectangular in shape, the whole board gets a mosaic or chess board pattern. End-grain butcher blocks are more durable, feature a harder surface than regular chopping blocks, and are easier on knife blades. The end-grain construction absorbs the knife between the fibers of the wood.
