Housekeeping Uniform: The Basics
There are a lot of businesses out there that require their staff to wear uniforms. There are many reasons why companies ask them to dress one way or another. Management will decide what is appropriate and then tell the staff who is then required to wear whatever is dictated. In the case of service it is the norm to wear a uniform. This is partially to help keep the public trust. Such is the case of the housekeeping uniform. If they did not wear one and you saw someone in your room when you walked in you would probably get very concerned about what was going on in your room and probably not believe that the person worked for the hotel at all.
The uniform for any business is one that is functional, in other words it is built for the job of the person wearing it. Do you remember when housekeeping use to wear dresses? Did you ever wonder why they disappeared? Dresses are not appropriate for cleaning. The housekeeping uniform is now built to support the job that they do. In almost all cases they will now include pants and a shirt, t-shirt or polo shirt depending on the preference of the hotel. They also will normally wear some kind of smock to protect the clothes from the cleansers that they use.
In some cases the hotel where the employee works even takes care of getting them cleaned. The housekeeping uniform can get kind of messy if the rooms are a mess. It is important that service personnel look as crisp as possible no matter what the job is. In this case the hotel will send out the uniforms to be dry cleaned so they can be as perfect as possible. It is not a rare thing to do but it does tend to cost the hotel money and not all are willing to do it. The employees are often left to make sure their uniforms are clean, in which case they need to wash them on their own time.
For most, the housekeeping uniform is two pieces. In other cases the uniform is only the top with the employee being allowed to wear whatever they want on the bottom with certain rules. The ability to stay comfortable while cleaning rooms is really important. Having the flexibility and freedom of movement to perform this task is important as well. This is not an easy job and being dressed for it with the right clothes and the right shoes is the best you can ask for as the employee.
You might get the housekeeping uniform from the hotel that you work for or you might be required to buy it yourself. No matter which way you have to do it you should know that there are many places that you can get these. Your employer might have a vendor that they deal with which makes it easier for you. Your fellow peers might be able to give you some ideas where to get them and of course there is always online.
