To improve your golf scores and handicap, you must know where your opportunities lie as well as where a catastrophe lies. Knowing where your bad golf shots are going to go is just as important as knowing where your good golf shots are going to go. Golf is known as a game of misses and good players know where to miss it.
When you step up onto a tee, you must be able to identify the good and bad of a golf hole. You must be able to be able to evaluate and rank all of the potential risks on a golf hole. The highest rank will always go to out of bounds followed by regular and lateral water hazards. Better players will evaluate things such as how dense is the rough in the landing area or how deep a face of a bunker is in the landing area.
The .safe. spots on the golf hole are then determined from these evaluations. A good player understands that they can afford themselves a small mistake like the light rough in order to stay out of the .big. trouble. You will find that most golf holes will have an area known as the bail out area. This is a much safer route even though it may be a little longer. This route does not bring in the hazards into play and takes away the possibility of the .big. number.
When should you bail out? Think of the percentages of each golf shot to be pulled off. David Toms winning the PGA Championship at Atlanta Country Club is a great example of this. As Toms laid up his third shot in the fairway, the broadcasters on TV were going nuts wondering what in the world he was doing! He was making par the most comfortable way he knew how. Toms hit his third shot close to the flag and beat Phil Mickelson for the title.
Playing conservative is smart when the penalty for a missed golf shot is double bogey or worse. Better players may use the fat part of the green to bail out where a good bail out for a 20 handicapper may be off the green in some light rough. If you not feel comfortable in negotiating the hazards in front of you then take a shot that would be more comfortable like the bail out area. Remember to lower your scores you must hit shots that you are comfortable with making.
Sometimes you have to play defensively however this does not mean scared. You will still take an aggressive swing at your "new" target.
