A chef's uniform consists of different pieces of clothing to complete the attire. Although most of the chefs do not wear all the pieces, most of the restaurants and big chain hotels insist on the chefs being properly attired in the entire uniform. A chef's uniform generally consists of a head net or chef hat; a bandanna, chef neckerchief, scarf, bow tie or Swiss tie; apron, chef jacket or coat; chef pants; belt, gloves; and shoes. A chef's hat, scarf and apron would be a definite part of the uniform that is worn by all the chefs.

Here is some information on pieces of a chef's uniform:
Chef Hat
The most popularly used chef’s hats are white in color for a chef's uniform. However, the latest market shows some trendy designer hats that come in different shades such as black, gray, checkered, red, blue and others. The black and the checkered ones are catching up on sales in the market compared to the traditional white ones.
Apron
When you think about food preparation, the apron is a must inclusion, particularly when you have a messy job to do. Most aprons are never clean as they keep the splashes and spills from reaching the main clothing and it is also the correct and easiest place to wipe your hands if you need to in a hurry.
The apron is a popular chef's uniform even in the home. For chefs, however, the aprons they use are normally white and are made from cotton or a mix of cotton and another material. Although the traditional full bib with front pockets design remains, many chefs prefer to wear the half type or those that fall from the waist. Current designs include the half bistro, square waist, tapered and the four-way apron. Some chefs also like those with slits on the side to allow them to access their pant pockets.
Chef Jacket
The chef jacket is traditionally a white double-breasted jacket and is used for practical reasons as a part of the chef's uniform. The thick cotton is to protect the chef from the heat of the stove. Originally the buttons where made out a material that couldn't burn either. The reasoning behind the style of the jacket is that double-breasted jackets can be reversed to hide stains.
Women's Chef Coat
Looking professional is very important but the real benefit to you in wearing a women's chef coat is that the design of the chef coat is made to fit a woman's body shape. In this sense the uniform does not look as though it is oversize or sloppy looking as when a woman wears a man's cut chef coat.
Chef Pants
Traditionally chef's uniform include pants that have a checked black and white pattern similar to those of the hound's tooth. The design was for the purpose of not making the stains very visible. Today, many executive chefs wear black pants made from cotton or a mix of polyester and cotton. Cargo chef pants have also been introduced and are getting well known.
