Golf Lessons

I want to take golf lessons to improve my scores. As I have watched friends take lessons, it seems like they will buy a series of lessons and all of them will be on the full swing. I do not think this is what I want. Would it not be better for my game if the lesson series is spread out on the full swing, putting and short game?

Yes you are correct! As I have given thousands of golf lessons in my career, students always want to know how to lower their scores. These students are always asking the question "How can I improve my golf game the quickest?" The challenge is that they really already know the answer and do not want to hear the truth. The truth is that your scores will improve the quickest by improving your putting. Below is the order I would suggest that you work on your golf game to lower your scores the fastest:

Short Game Golf Lessons
Most professionals and better golfers will call the short game any shot within 100 yards of the hole. If you are just starting to play it may be everything within 50 yards. For our purposes we will call it any shot that is not a full swing. The short game will include chipping and pitching of the golf ball. Whether you take a real golf lesson or read an online lesson to understand the fundamentals of the short game, you can play the same type of game to improve. In this game, you will need to get the golf ball up and down from five different spots before you can move on to your round, the next part of your practice session or end your practice session and go home. Again this will make you feel the pressure but yet keep it fun for you.

Putting Golf Lessons
Putting practice is the fastest way to lower your scores. Yes I said it correctly. Putting practice is the fastest way to lower your scores. If you are like most amateurs most of your practice time is spent on the driving range with your driver. You can improve your golf game rapidly if make a small goal of making 10 or 20 (you come up with the number best for you) three foot putts before you play a round of golf or to end a practice session. This is a specific quantifiable goal that will make you feel the pressure of actually playing. If you do not believe me wait until you only have to make one more!

Your Putting Stroke And Putting Training Aids

I have been reading up on the putting stroke. I would like to buy a putting training aid to help me improve my putting stroke. However, I am confused as there is so much info out there and they all claim to help you improve your putting. How do I know if the putting training aid will really help me or if I am just wasting my money?

Great question and wish I had more information about your putting stroke! With that being said we will cover all of the basics of the two main putting theories that are being used today on the PGA tours.

1. Straight back and straight through stroke – One of the two popular putting theories was developed by Dave Pelz. The straight back and straight through theory also known as the Pelz theory is moving the putter head in a straight back and straight through motion. There are many manufacturers that offer putting aids to give you the sensation of the proper movement. The more bent over that you are when you address the putt, the more likely you are to use the straight back and straight through putting method. The Eyeline putting square system is a very effective putting training aid to use with this theory.

2. Putting arc stroke – The other popular putting theory was developed by Stan Utley. With his theory, the putter travels in an arc around your spine. Again, many manufacturers offer different putting aids to allow you feel the correct sensation. Many times, the decision of which putting theory that you use is determined by how you set up to the golf ball when you putt. The more upright when you address the putt, the more likely you are to use the arc putting method. The putting training aid that we use for this motion is the putting arc deluxe.

Best Putting Drills

I want to improve my putting. I want some putting drills to help me improve my short putts as well as my lag putts. My trouble is a get bored fairly easy on the putting green so any putting drills that can be incorporated into games with my buddies would be great. We will find a way to create a little wager on it.

Here are some of the best putting drills that we often use to help our students improve their putting:

Lag drill
When it comes to putting for distance, we all tend to miss longer putts more short and long as opposed to right and left. This is one of my favorite putting drills. Place a tee anywhere where the putting green and fringe meet. Begin by hitting putts from varying distances from 10 to 50 feet towards the tee. The goal is to stop your golf ball as close to the fringe as possible. Challenge a friend or challenge yourself by continuing the putting drill until you can stop so many balls in side of a certain distance. This will be determined by your current skill level.

Pull back drill
The pull back drill is one of the great putting drills or games to play with friends. Pick a set number of holes to play. Flip a tee to see who gets to pick the first location. Each player will keep track of their strokes. The catch is that when you miss any putt, you pull the ball back away from the hole the length of your putter. You next putt is to be stroked from the new distance. Obviously, this will make the short putts during your next round seem much easier.

Ladder drill
The ladder drill is one of those putting lessons that you may already do and not even know that you do it! You can do this drill on the practice putting green or on an indoor putting mat. Take five golf balls and drop them in a straight line every three feet from the hole. So every three feet you will have a ball from three feet to fifteen feet from the hole. Now start at either end of the line and work your way up and down the ladder. If you miss a putt, start all over. Again, this drill will put some pressure on you as you get closer to the end and will make the putts on the golf course much easier.

Putting Aids

As the season is just getting started for many golfers in the northern part of the country, many golfers are asking about which putting aids they can use to improve their putting stroke and lower their handicap this year. Here are some putting aids that have worked well for our students at the VGS Golf Academy:

If you are looking for putting aids to improve a straight back and straight through putting stroke as suggested by Dave Pelz, then you will want to look at the Eyeline Putting Square System. By using the Putting Square System, you can insure that your putter face stays square throughout the entire putting stroke. You can also monitor your alignment and eye position. The top of this putting aid is mirrored and include lines to help you to get into a perfect starting position for you.
If that is not your theory and you subscribe to more of a Stan Utley taught arc type of putting stroke, then you will want a Putting Arc. The putting arc comes in three different models, the Putting Arc Deluxe, MSIII and the T3. All allow you to place the heel of your putter against the practice aid and stroke putts in a perfect arc. Many students will place this training aid three or four feet from the hole to build their confidence on the "Knee Knockers."

If you are having a hard time with the shorter putts then we suggest using the Bullseye Cup by Eyeline. As we know, the hole is 4.25" inches. The Bullseye Cup is a circular device that fits into the cup without damaging it. The catch is that this training device reduces the size of the cup by 30% by giving you a 2" inch opening. After working with this practice aid for just a few minutes, the hole will look like a peach basket and it will seem easy to make putts.

Putting Aids

I want to buy the best putting aid or the best putting aids to help me create a better putting stroke. I have been looking around at different putting aids however the more that I look it seems like the more confused that I get. I use a straight back and straight through method with my putting stroke. Can you tell me the best putting aid to use for this type of Dave Pelz putting stroke?

Thank you for sending your question to the VGS Golf Blog! This is a good question that more people need to understand before they purchase a golf training aid for their putting stroke or full swing that the training aid needs to match your swing mechanics.

A great example of this is as you prescribe to the Dave Pelz theory of taking the putter straight back and straight through; you do not want to purchase a putting arc. Although the putting arc is a great putting training aid, it does not get you closer to your goal of perfecting a straight back and straight through putting stroke.

Instead you should be looking at a putting training aid such as the Callaway Putt Track. The Callaway Putt Track helps develop a smooth and consistent putting stroke. You can practice indoor putting or outdoor putting as you can take the Callaway Putt Track anywhere. This putting training aid will ingrain the feeling of a straight back and straight through putting stroke.

Another great putting aid to help you build a Pelz type stroke is the Eyeline Putting Square System. With the mirrored Putting Square System, you can ensure that your eyes are over the ball, your shoulders are lined up and the putter face is square to your target line throughout the putting stroke.

We hope this helps you and if you have any other questions about any training aids please feel free to email us through the blog again.

Golf Lessons - Improve Your Putting With These 5 Putting Tips

It seems like I am always encouraging my students to work on their short game and in particular their putting. You can hit a bad drive and make up for your mistake but you cannot to the same with a poorly struck putt.

Here is part of an article, Golf Lessons - Putting Lessons That Will Improve Your Stroke, we have posted within the Putting Articles at http://www.virtualgolfswing.com/.

Putting Lessons – The Putting Grip
The grip you take on your putter should be different from the one that you take with your iron or your driver. First of all, the putter grip typically is flat on one side. Both of your thumbs should sit on top of the putter grip. In effect, this will allow the putter shaft and your forearm to create a fairly straight line or just one lever to move back and through.

Putting Lessons – The Putting Stroke
The rate of the putting stroke is very important to the distance control of your stroke. You can easily do a putting drill that you can take out onto the golf course. As you stroke your putt, simply say 2, 1 just as you would normally speak in a conversation. Not faster and not slower. This is your personal rhythm. At first, do this putting drill with your practice strokes and make the stroke match to your cadence. Once this is done, hit a few putts on the practice putting greens.

Putting Lessons – Through Impact
Acceleration is a must during the impact position of any putting stroke. It is very important that the shaft of the putter goes past your left leg for right handed golfers. This is a result of you accelerating the putter through impact. This is key to being able to hit putts the same speed and control your distance.

Putting Lessons – The Finish
The main thing that needs to happen in the finish of the putting stroke is that once your putter shaft is past your front leg, you need to be able to hold it there for a count of three seconds. This will give you time to evaluate what has happened during the stroke and what you have felt.

Beginning Golfers - How To Lower Your Scores Fast

The question that we get the most beginning golfers as well as low-handicapped golfers is “How can I lower my scores the fastest?” If we hear it once a day we hear it a thousand times a day. The answer is very simple. Improve your short game.

Opposed to popular belief and actions, whether you want to learn how to play the game of golf as a beginning golfer or if you have played for a long time and want to lower your handicap, learn how to chip and putt. It may not seem as macho or as sexy to learn all of these little short shots as opposed to standing on the driving range banging out long shots. No matter what your current handicap is, if you want to lower your golf scores learn all aspects of the short game. This will drop your scores faster than standing on a driving range for a long period of time week after week.

Here is a question that may put how important the short game is and can help put it into perspective for you. Once your round is finished, do you want to give your buddy a hard time about the one drive you hit past him/her or do you want to brag about the lower score that you shot? Speaking from experience, the ribbing about how your buddy hit one past you is pretty short-lived as he is paying you for winning the bet of lowest score.

One last thought about the short game for you is to make sure you arrive early enough to spend some time on the putting green putting and chipping before your round. You do not need to spend thirty minutes there. You just need to hit enough putts and chip shots to get a good feeling going prior to your round. This is important for beginning golfers as well as low-handicap golfers.

Fear Of Putting

I am ready to admit that I am now scared of putting. I have lost it. Can you give me some help? I would like to have a few putting tips that are based on putting fundamentals that I could use.
With these putting tips you can take the fear out of your putting:

Finish Position
We are going to start with the end as this will help a large majority of amateurs. Once you have made your putting stroke, the grip of the putter should be past your front leg. Most amateurs get in trouble because they flip or pop at a putt and the grip or handle of the putter never gets past their leg. This means that they have more than likely hit the putt on the bottom of the club face. This is troubling, as controlling distance will be a big challenge for someone who putts with this putting method.

Ball position
Where the ball is placed at address is very important to how the putt will roll once it is struck. Proper ball position to strike a good putt begins with the middle of the putter head in the center of your stance. As you take your address and look down at the top of your putter, the center of the head should be in the middle of your stance or some say in between your feet. Since the putter head is taking up the middle of your stance, this means that the golf bal is just ahead of the middle of your stance.

Weight placement
As you take your address to stroke a putt, you should have more weight on your leg closer to the hole. For right-handed golfers, this simply means that you will have more weight on your left foot or left leg. The question of how much will vary from player to player. With that being said, it will probably end up somewhere between 60-65% on your forward foot. Think about it. Any good golf shot that is struck has more weight on the forward foot than the back. The same is true with the putting stroke.

Golf Putting Training Aids

I am trying to find training aids that will make me a better putter. I am interested in learning more about the Stan Utley putting method of putting in an arc. It seems like many players have had success using this method. Can you suggest some training aids that would help me learn how to putt in an arc?

Sure we can. First, here is the information about Utley's book which we highly recommend that you read if you are going to convert to his putting method. Would it not make sense that you first need to understand the method in order to make it work? These training aids will help you:

1. The Art Of Putting
Utley outlines in The Art of Putting his fundamentals for players of all levels, from beginners to very skilled. The easy to understand method will allow you to develop a repeatable stroke by introducing you to the fundamentals of the proper grip, posture, alignment, and swing. The Art of Putting will give you guidelines for finding the correct putter for you and the type of stroke you have, how a putt should sound as well as how to read greens properly. The Art Of Putting is a book that all levels of golfers from beginners to skilled players will enjoy.

2. TOMI Putting System
TOMI was developed by professional instructor Marius Filmalter, a pre-eminent authority on the mechanics and psychology of golf. Marius has helped to instruct golfers on the PGA, Champions, and LPGA Tours, and has personally studied over 43,000 putting strokes in his career.

As one of the most technical putting training aids, TOMI evaluates your putting stroke and Marius gives you constructive feedback on how to perfect your putting stroke. TOMI will see flawed stroke angles and motions that often go unnoticed, even to expert eyes. The Tomi will capture all of the following data and display it for you: Alignment at Impact, Stroke Path Direction, Backward Stroke Rotation, Forward Stroke Rotation, and Speed at Impact. Tomi captures records and gives real-time feedback on your stroke.

3. Stan Utley Learning Curve
The Stan Utley Learning curve is one of the easiest training aids to use. You can use the Learning Curve indoors or outdoors and is molded to the shape of the arc swing. Simply place the heel of your putter along the Learning Curve and you will be properly guided in the correct arc. In addition, it typical comes with a DVD explaining how to use the training aid.

4. The Putting Arc Deluxe
The Putting Arc putting trainer is similar to the Learning Curve and is also endorsed by Stan Utley. The Putting Arc Deluxe is a beautiful piece of wood that will guide you to a simple, repeatable, and understandable approach to putting. The Putting Arc putting trainer will assist you in developing a confidence when standing over your putter felt by only a small percentage of golfers, a confidence in your ability to direct the golf ball exactly where you intend.

Improve Putting In Less Time

I want to improve my putting stroke this year and do not know how to efficiently go about it. Like most people, I am very busy and have little time to practice putting. I would like your suggestions on I can go about improving my putting without having any more time than I have had before.

First you just need to put together a plan. I would suggest using the information below and split your putting practice time into thirds. The two most important parts of a putt are distance and direction. You can improve both putting D’s in a short 15 minute practice session two or three times a week working just five minutes a piece on the points below. You do not even need to be at the golf course to do these easy putting drills.

After deciding if you will be following the thoughts of Dave Pelz (The Putting Bible) or Stan Utley (The Art of Putting), when you practice your putting stroke, then practice your putting stroke. Since you are solely working on a putting mechanic, you will be able to focus on the putting mechanic easier without using a putting cup. Without the putting cup, you are not worried about the result of the putt, just the feeling of the mechanic.

Now that you have the putting mechanics squared away and are starting your putts on the correct line, we need to make sure we are hitting our putts the correct distance. Stroke putts of distance (over 20 feet or longer) to the fringe of the putting green or to another club on the putting green that you have placed on the putting green. Your goal is to stroke your putt so that it barely touches the fringe or club. Again, this takes the putting cup out of the equation and allows you to use your natural senses.

An easy way to learn how to start the putt on the correct line is to hit two foot putts. Literally. Sounds silly and easy enough but let me tell you what it will do for you. In this short distance, you can see the original line of the putt. You can see if the ball is pushed, pulled or on the correct line. The other advantage to this putting drill is you will see the ball go in the hole time and time again. You have to hit a pretty bad putt in order to miss the putting cup from two feet. Watching the ball go into the hole time and time again feeds your brain positive images and builds your confidence.

Again, it will not take long and you will begin to hole more putts and watch your scores and your handicap go low. Are you ready for it?

Putting Aids To Help With Putting Fundamentals

I have been looking at putting aids. There are so many out there it is hard to tell what will work and what will not. Can you give me some suggestions for putting aids that can help me with the putting fundamentals?

1. Start the ball on the correct line – Direction is one of the two most important parts of a putt. Direction is most important when we get down to the three and four footers and something is on the line. Obviously, all of us can stroke a putt that travels three of four feet so distance is not a challenge. The use of putting aids referred to as putting pegs allow you to work solely the direction that you are starting your putts. Putting pegs are pegs anchored into the ground and has a string that runs above the ground between the two pegs. Sometimes they are made with pencils and string or you can purchase pre-made pegs. This will allow you to make your stroke and follow the golf ball under the string. You will have automatic feedback.

3. Putting arc stroke – The other popular putting theory was developed by Stan Utley. With his theory, the putter travels in an arc around your spine. Again, many manufacturers offer different putting aids to allow you feel the correct sensation. Many times the decision of which theory that you use is determined by how you set up to the golf ball when you putt. The more upright when you address the putt, the more likely you are to use the arc putting method.

Gather Information To Improve Your Putting Stroke

I have set my goals this year to become a better putter. Obviously to do this I will need to make more putts. I want to gather some information on how I am currently putting on the golf course. Can you make some suggestions on how I go about doing this so I can make more putts this year?

Using a separate golf scorecard, you will record on each line: 1. How many putts were taken 2. The length of the first putt 3. Did you miss long or short? 4. Did you miss right or left?

In just five minutes after your round, you can total the lines. Not to sound scientific, after three rounds you will have a good sample of information that will lead you to what you need to improve upon.

Here are some things you will want to keep your eye on as you gather your putting statistics:

Your putter face is either opened or closed at impact if you are missing the putting cup more to one side or another. You can fix this by putting balls from just two feet from the hole on the practice putting green. In addition, hold your finish for three seconds. The good news is you really have to hit a poor putt to miss from this distance and more importantly you will bee able to see the line of the putt you hit. If your putting line does not improve, look into purchasing a laser pointer that will easily attach to your putter. Most are inexpensive and will give you instant positive feedback.

Take the hole away and hit multiple putts to the fringe. Your goal is to stop the ball where the putting green means the green's collar. Again it is very important that you hold your finish for three seconds. When a players has trouble with their lag putting, it is typically due to the putter re-coiling at the end of the stroke. Do this from different distances to improve your lag putts. This drill works on the speed of your putts.

Putt With An Open Or Square Stance

I need help with my putting. I am confused about how to stand to the ball. My pro old me I need to stand square. I have always used an open stance so I am a little confused. Can you clarify why I need to be square when I putt as well as some other putting fundamentals that you teach?

Making sure that your shoulders are square to the target line is an important putting fundamental that is often over looked. Many players use an open stance while they putt. Allowing your feet and hips to be open at address is fine. However, the shoulders must be square to your target line. As you bend over and let your arms hang freely to make your putting stroke. Your arms will naturally swing back and forth in the direction the your shoulders are pointing.

Since while you are putting you must stand to the side of the golf ball, your eyes must be over the golf ball. We have all heard this one before, correct? In addition, your eyes should not be ahead of the golf ball either. To learn where your eyes are positioned during your putting stroke, simply take your putting stance. Then drop a golf ball from the bridge of your nose and between your eyes. The ball should drop onto the ball on the ground or just behind it on the target line. There are also many golf putting aids that can assist you with where you are positioning your eyes while putting.

In order to strike a solid putt, the putter head should travel low to the ground on the backswing as well as the forward swing. This allows the putter head move back and through to the target line and gives you the best chance to make solid contact. Solid contact not only is important to put the ball on the correct line, it is imperative for your distance control. If you are hitting a different spot on the putter on every single putting stroke, it will be impossible to hit two balls in a row the same speed or distance. Translating this to the golf course, even if you do get the putt started on the correct line, the putt will typically end up short of the hole because they have not been hit in the center of the putter face.

The last thing you should practice to improve your putting stroke is to simply hold your finish for a count of three seconds. This is important for a couple of reasons. Holding your finish will make sure that you are accelerating during your stroke. In addition, this will give you time to reflect on what went well and what could have gone better.

Do not fall into the rest of the crowd and spend all of your time on the driving range. Use these putting tips and or putting aids on the putting green to improve your putting stroke and you will see your scores improve very quickly.

Putting - The Fundamentals and How Much To Practice

I want to improve my putting this year. I am wondering how much of my practice time should I devote to my short game vs. my full swing? In addition, which putting fundamentals should I be working on to improve my putting stroke?

There are three putting fundamentals that you need to make sure that you employ in your putting stroke. Even if you change your practice sessions, so that you putt 50% of the time and spend the other 50% on the driving range you will be amazed at how quickly your scores will go down. Here are the three putting fundamentals:

KEEP A STABLE BASE -Watching the tour players, you will see that no matter how long the putt is, they do not move their lower body during the putting stroke. To keep you lower body still during the putting stroke, the following putting drill will keep your lower body in place during the stroke. Find an empty wall and take your putting stance while placing your bum against the wall. Now simply take some strokes without allowing your bum to move off of the wall. While out on the putting green, take your putting stance. Then wedge a rubber ball between your knees. You can use a cheap kids ball or a volleyball. You will need to squeeze the ball slightly to create a solid foundation and not to let the ball drop from between your knees. Eventually, you will develop the feeling of stability. Keeping a stable base is a fundamental of a consistent putting stroke.

KEEP YOUR EYES OVER THE BALL - While you are putting, you must stand to the side of the golf ball. So, your eyes must be over the golf ball. We have all heard this one before, correct? In addition, your eyes should not be ahead of the golf ball either. To learn where your eyes are positioned during your stroke, simply take your putting stance. Then drop a golf ball from the bridge of your nose and between your eyes. The ball should drop onto the ball on the ground or just behind it on the target line. There are also many golf putting aids that can assist you with where you are positioning your eyes while putting.

KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL -You should hold your head still to keep the putter on path throughout the stroke and there are many ways to do this. If you travel, you can practice this at home or in a hotel room. Take your putting stance. Make sure the top of your head is touching the wall and as you take your stroke you should not be able to feel your head move off of the wall. If you do you have too much motion in your putting stroke your head will stay on the wall. Another way to do it is to incorporate a friend. While you swing your putter back and through, have your friend place his/her hand on top of your head to hold your head still. This also provides instant feedback to you. If you are by yourself, take a putting stroke and after the ball is gone, look at the spot where the ball was and slowly count to three and listen for the ball to fall into the putting cup. Although counting to three will seem like an eternity, this is the key to become a good putter under pressure.

Should I Putt With One Hand?

I have a question about putting. I see many good players practicing their putting stroke with only one hand. Why do they do this and how do I go about practice putting this way?

Two reasons that I highly encourage my students to practice one handed putting are that it gives them the exact feel of a proper putting motion and it develops a feel for the proper impact position for the putting stroke. This is a very simple thing to implement into your putting practice. Simply setup for a putt from just two to three feet away from the hole.

Take your usual putting grip for a putting stroke. Assuming you are putting right handed, take your left hand off the putter leaving only your right hand on the putter in the hand’s usual position. Now you should have your putter in its regular position and the ball position placed in your usual position as well. The palm of your right hand should be equal to the direction of your putter face.

One reason for doing this from such a short distance as two or three feet is the backswing will not need very much movement. This should allow you to “feel” the putter head as it moves through the motion no matter how strong you are. The right wrist should keep the same angle throughout the stroke as at address and will not break AT ALL during this stroke from this distance. With the correct grip pressure, you will be able to feel your putter load against the index finger of your right hand (again, for a right handed golfer). This load that is properly stored will be delivered to the golf ball during the forward stroke and will be lost just after impact. If you use a stripped range ball, place the stripe so it is parallel to the putting green and make your stroke under the stripe on the range ball. Your right hand should be ahead of the ball at impact. Now hold your finish to a slow count of three. The putter head should be under your hands and not way out in front of your hands. Remember, your right wrist angle should not change.

Some players, including tour players, have putted in competition using only one hand. You will have to make that decision for yourself. However, putting with one hand on the practice green will lead you to hitting solid putts which will equate to holing more putts during your round.

Putting Advice For Beginners

I am a beginning golfer and would like to know how to lower my scores. I keep hearing that I should spend time on my putting stroke but I do not know what I should practice. Can give me a good place to start?

First let me applaud you for wanting to improve your putting and not wanting to just stand on the range and beat practice balls. The info below will definitely put you on the right track.

SPlit yoru time evenly and use these putting tips and or putting aids on the putting green to improve your putting stroke and you will see your scores improve very quickly.

3 Indoor Putting Training Aids To Keep You Sharp Over The Winter

As the weather reports show more and more snow falling across the US, I know many golf-addicts are wondering how to keep their putting stroke sharp during the unwanted lay-off from the game. Indoor practice putting is an inexpensive and convenient way to keep your putting stroke well-tuned while you cannot get outside and practice. Here are three putting training aids that can effectively be used indoors to improve your stroke.

INDOOR PRACTICE PUTTING - The Putting Alignment Mirror
The Putting Alignment Mirror is very easy to use and great for checking your setup on your putts. As poor alignment is the major cause of missed putts, using the Alignment Mirror will create confidence on the green. The Putting Alignment Mirror is very portable as it can be kept it in your golf bag! You can use the Putting Alignment Mirror indoors at home or at the office or outside when you practice or warm up before a round. The Putting Alignment Mirror measures 12" x 6" and comes with a black carry bag as well as an instructional DVD. The Putting Alignment Mirror is the #1 training aid requested by the PGA tour players from Eyeline Golf!

INDOOR PRACTICE PUTTING - The Putting Arc
The Putting Arc putting trainer works because it guides the putter head in pure planar rotation about an axis which passes through the golfer’s spine between the shoulders. This means that the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders all stay connected throughout the putting stroke. The Putting Arc golf putting aid has radial lines on its top. This important feature shows the correct clubface alignment at each point in the putting stroke. This alignment is just as important as the club head path! Again, this practice aid can be used indoors or out and comes with a CD to show you how to quickly lower your scores through better putting.

INDOOR PRACTICE PUTTING - The TOMI Personal Putting Trainer
With
The TOMI Personal Putting Trainer, you will feel like you are taking a personalized putting lesson from one of the world's top putting instructors, Marius Filmalter whenever you are using the unit. TOMI records the most critical parameters of your putting stroke in real-time. TOMI shows you what you're doing right and what you are doing incorrectly as well as tells you how to fix it and even gives you the drills you need to become a great putter.

TOMI was developed by professional instructor Marius Filmalter, a pre-eminent authority on the mechanics and psychology of golf. Marius has helped to instruct golfers on the PGA, Champions, and LPGA Tours, and has personally studied over 43,000 putting strokes in his career.

Fundamentals Of Putting

As we all know, putting makes up the majority of the strokes that you will take in the golf course. Many amateurs do not even have a good idea of the putting fundamentals that you must have in order to make putts. Here is what you need to work on to improve your putting.

Putting Fundamental - Take your putting stance, you address the golf ball, the golf ball should be positioned equal to where the logo would be positioned on your left chest for a right handed golfer and positioned on your right chest for a left handed golfer. With this is forward golf ball position, the putter will not be descending but ascending through impact and the golf ball. The golf ball will be placed forward of the bottom of your swing arc. In addition, your arms should hang freely and hang straight down and not out. In addition, you should be able to take your address position and drop a golf ball from in-between your eyes. This ball should drop and hit the ball on the ground.

Putting Fundamental - Simply set up with sixty to seventy percent (again it is individual) of your weight on your left foot for right handed golfers or on your right foot for left handed golfers. When you make your putting stroke, your weight will not shift. It will stay in the same place. Again, setting your weight forward will make sure that the putt will be hit while you are in balance and you do not have has many moving parts.

Putting Fundamental - Finish your golf set up, as you look down at the golf ball, move your hands so they are just forward of the golf ball. As you make your putting stroke, your hands will return to this same position at impact and then through to your finish position. With your hands ahead of the ball at impact, the momentum of your putter is more likely to be moving forward towards the hole. In English this means your ball will be starting on the target line more often than not.

Putting Training Aids

Golf putting aids or training aids can help with every aspect of your golf game, whether you want to improve your balance, your aim, or just enjoy putting practice. There are a variety of golf putting aids to choose from including golf simulators, putting trainers, practice balls, putting cups, aim trainers, nets, mats, putting greens, therapeutic aids and more.

Golf Ball Spinner and Spot Finder
The inherent lopsidedness of every ball works against you off the tee and on the green. The golf ball spot finder, an excellent putting aid, will ensure your golf ball no longer has a tendency to wobble as well as reduce the chance of your ball swerving on the putting green.

Putter Grips
Putting aids such as putter grips eliminates the amount of wear and tear on a persons lower back, hips, and knees during a round of golf. A perfect grip encourages the use of the preferred arm-and-shoulders putting motion as opposed to the wrists.

Laser Putter
A laser putter is a computerized training system filled with the latest technologies that can identify impact position and track the player's swing path and face angle.

Putting Alignment System
If you want to lower your score and dramatically improve your golf performance, you simply have to work on your putt being that a huge percentage of your game takes place on the putting green. A putting alignment system can do just that by adjusting your posture and the position of your hands to consistently deliver a perfect putt.

The putting aids featured above are only a small fraction of tools available aimed at perfecting your putt. Putting can be challenging, even for pro golfers on some days as evident by a few notable televised tournaments. Golf putting aids are a necessity to perfecting your golf game in general.

The TOMI Professional Putting Aid

I am a golf instructor in New York. I have been researching and hearing about the TOMI Putting System. The TOMI Professional unit seems to be very good however I have not been able to see one in real life yet. Have you had an experience with the TOMI Professional and can you tell me your version of how it works?

I have had the opportunity to use and be on the TOMI Professional Putting System personally. Once set up properly, it was awesome to use for my putting stroke as well as what I was able to do with the few students that I have had on the unit. It is a lot of info and some students (lawyers, engineers, etc.) could be a challenge as the TOMI Professional unit gives you A LOT of information.

The TOMI, a putting stroke training aid, records the most parameters of your putting stroke in real-time. Tomi shows you what you're doing right as well as what you're doing wrong. Then tells you how to fix your problem by giving you the putting drills that you will need to become a great putter.

The Tomi putting training aid allows you to use your own putter and will capture the following measurements: Alignment of the putter face at the point of impact The speed of the putter head The direction that the path of your stroke will take during the motion The amount of rotation of the putter face on the backswing as well as the amount of rotation of the putter face on the forward swing. The Tomi Putting Training Aid captures, records and will give you real time feedback on your putting stroke on multiple strokes.

So how does the TOMI Professional putting training aid work? The Tomi's transmitter clip moves in perfect unison with the putter. The clip signals putter motions to the Tomi base unit. In turn, the base unit performs a sequence of algorithms and transmits results to the system pc. Then the Tomi's stroke analysis software converts the data into easy-to-understand and easy-to-explain charts and graphs right on your computer screen.

Putting Aids

What exactly are putting aids? Putting aids are devices that are designed to help you improve your golf game. The inevitable question though is do they work? They most certainly do. These practice aids will help you become a more precise and better-rounded golfer. Putting aids come in all different forms and support many different putting theories such as the Stan Utley putting theory and the Dave Pelz putting theory. If you do not belong to a country club, you may wish to purchase a putting aid such as an indoor putting green that resembles a golf hole. These can vary from in-ground putting greens to simple strips on artificial turf. This way you can get as much practice as you want to or need to. The more elaborate indoor putting greens offer multiple holes and undulation for practicing breaking putts.

If you wish to improve your putting stroke, there are putting practice aids for you too. Some putting aids are designed to help you keep you with proper ball position your putting alignment as well.

In addition, Putting mirrors are available to help you improve your stroke. This idea may sound simple but it can really help you get your stance and your putting stroke perfected. Another putting aid is the laser guide. This can attach to your putter or golf bag. What the practice aid does is point where the putter face is pointing throughout your stroke. This will bring consistency to your putting stroke and help you lower your scores.

If you are looking for a lot of putting aids in one spot, there are now many packages that feature several different putting practice aids. Most golf stores, sporting good stores or web sites devoted to golf will carry these packages that you can buy as a gift for your favorite golfer or buy to improve your own game.

The Pendulum Putting Rod

If you are looking for a putting aid, The Pendulum Putting Rod allows you to become a better putter and lower your scores. It will allow you to improve your putting plane, your putting setup, your putting impact position as well as your balance while you putt.

PERFECT PUTTING PLANE: The Pendulum Putting Rod also keeps your stroke on plane. If you make the mistake of taking the putter back outside of the target line, the Pendulum Putting Rod will fall off of your chest.

PERFECT PUTTING SETUP: If the putter shaft is behind the ball at address, it adds loft to the putter. The Result: The putt bounces. It tends to go to the right of target comes up short of the cup. The Pendulum Putting Rod creates a perfect shaft angle – On target, in the cup.

PERFECT PUTTING IMPACT: Many amateurs allow their putter head to pass their hands before impact. This results in hitting putts on the bottom of the putter face and no consistency in their direction or distance. If the hands “flip” through the impact zone, there is no control of the putter face. This putting aid keeps you in the proper hand position at impact which will result in you hitting consistent, solid putts which will result in better distance control.

PERFECT PUTTING BALANCE: If you lift your head and eyes during the stroke, you will incorrectly strike the putt. In turn, you will have difficulty controlling your distance that you stroke your putts and end up with really long or short second putts. The Pendulum Putting Rod putting aid keeps you in the perfect balanced posture and lets you hit every putt solid.

As I said before, I have never met a golfer that did not want to improve his or her golf game and this is a tool that will give you instant feedback whether it is good or bad. See you on the putting green!

Utley And Pelz Putting Training Aids

I have some friends that are good players and they are always using different putting training aids. They have told me that different putting aids work with different putting methods. How do I know which golf putting aids will help me?

The first question that you need to ask yourself is: Do you putt in an arc? The second question being: Do I move the putter straight back and straight through during my stroke? The answers to these two simple questions will provide you with the information that you need to go and purchase the correct putting aids that will help improve your putting stroke and to lower your scores.

Putting Aids – Stan Utley Putting Method
Stan Utley is the author of the book The Art of Putting. In it, he concludes that the putter, as every other club during a golf swing, moves around one central point being your spine. With this thinking the putter head would naturally move in an arc around your spine, this it has become known as the arc putting method. With this putting theory, it is thought that the putter head is not manipulated during the putting stroke which in turn leads to a smaller chance for error. Utley has worked with such tour players as Jay Haas, Peter Jacobson, Darren Clarke and Rocco Mediate.

Putting Aids – Dave Pelz Putting Method
Dave Pelz began his career as a NASA scientist and brought his analytical thought process to golf and specifically the short game. Pelz has taken statistics on all aspects of the short game for years. His first book Putt Like The Pros laid the ground work for the follow up The Putting Bible. It is Pelz belief that the putter head and putter face should stay on a direct line with your target or target line (for a breaking putt) throughout the entire stroke. Many critics think that it is impossible to consistently manipulate the putter head as needed to produce a putt that will roll on the desired line. Pelz currently focuses on his Phil Mickelson, two-time Masters Champion.

Putting Aids – TOMI Putting Sytem
The TOMI Putting System was invented by Marius Filmalter. The TOMI Putting System uses technology to give you information on your alignment at set-up and impact, the direction of your stroke path, the amount of rotation in your swing as well as the speed of your putter at impact. No matter which putting method that you use, this system really measures where you are when it counts the most and that is impact! The TOMI comes in a personal version as well as a professional version.

Putting Fundamentals

I am a new golfer and want to know if you can give me the putting fundamentals so I can get a good start to the game.

We can help you with that. Here are the
putting fundamentals that you should focus on to build a good putting stroke:

Putting Fundamentals - KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL
You should hold your head still to keep the putter on path throughout the stroke. There are many ways to do this. You can practice this at home or in a hotel room if your travel. Take your putting stance with your head touching the wall. As you take your stroke you should not be able to feel your head move off of the wall. If you do you have too much motion in your putting stroke. You also can incorporate a friend. While you swing your putter back and through freely have your friend hold your head still. This also provides instant feedback. After the ball is gone, look at the spot where the ball was and slowly count to three and listen for the ball to fall into the putting cup. Although counting to three will seem like an eternity, this is key to become a good putter under pressure.

Putting Fundamentals - EYES CLOSED
After you line up a short two to three foot putt, simply close your eyes. Closing your eyes will encourage you to really feel the movement of your arms. You will find that the slower your arms move, the more consistent you will putt. In addition, you will become much better at your distance control .

Putting Fundamentals - STABLE BASE
This drill will help you keep your lower body in place during the putting stroke. First, take your
putting stance and then wedge a rubber ball between your knees. You will need to squeeze the ball slightly to create a solid foundation and not to let the ball drop. You will develop the feeling of stability which is a fundamental of a consistent stroke by rolling putts this way.

Putting Aids To Use With The Stan Utley Putting Method

I want to improve my putting and have been looking at various putting aids. I like to swing my putter head in an arc. Are there any putting aids on the market that specifically work with the Stan Utley Putting Method of swinging the putter head in an arc?

First, let’s talk about the Stan Utley Putting Method. Stan Utley has worked with tour players such as Jay Haas, Peter Jacobson, Darren Clarke and Rocco Mediate to improve their putting.

Putting Aids – The Pendulum Putting Rod
Using the Pendulum Putting Rod helps you with critical putting fundamentals such as a perfect one-piece connection between the shoulders arms, and hands. This putting training aid will also help you stay in perfect posture throughout the stroke. For example, if you lift your head, the rod will fall from your chest. You automatically get the sensory feedback from this putting practice aid. The Pendulum Putting Rod gives you a consistent way to check your putter shaft angle at address which will determine the putting plane the putter loft and you in turn will improve your distance control. You will always know that the putting stroke is on the proper plane because if you take the putter back outside the line, the Pendulum Putting Rod will fall.

Putting Aids – Deluxe Model Putting Arc
The Putting Arc Deluxe is a beautifully finished solid wood for indoor or outdoor use. The Putting Arc putting trainer is a revolutionary new golf training aid, which will guide you to a simple, repeatable, and understandable approach to putting. The Putting Arc putting trainer will assist you in developing a confidence when standing over your putter felt by only a small percentage of golfers, a confidence in your ability to direct the golf ball exactly where you intend.
These putting aids will allow you to improve your putting stroke while subscribing to the arc method or also known as the Stan Utley Method.

Free Putting Drills That will Put Money In Your Pocket

The touring professionals, male or female, spend the majority of their practice time on the putting green. Simply put, that is just how important putting the golf ball well is to them. To develop better feel and a more consistent putting stroke with a very simple putting drill. You will only need three tees while on your club's putting green.

This putting drill will measure the two most important things to make a putt, distance and direction. First, you will better be able to judge your distance if you are hitting solid putts. Dave Pelz has done extensive research on exactly where players stroke the golf ball on their putters is in direct relation to their golf handicap. Second, you will be able to monitor the initial direction of the golf ball as well.
To set up the first two golf tees for the putting drill, Find a three-foot flat putt. Place two tees just a little wider than your putter head. The tees will act as a gate for your putter head and you will stroke putts through these two golf tees. Again, the idea is that if you can hit solid putts then your distance control will improve. This will, in turn, lead you to make more putts. Also, if you can learn to putt with your eyes focused on a spot in front of the ball and never watch the ball leave the putter face or watch what the putter is doing during the motion, the better a putter you will become.

To set up the third tee, bury the third tee in the green an inch in front of the golf ball. This tee will be directly on the line you intend to roll the ball. The third tee should be pushed far enough into the ground so that you can see the top of the tee however, it won't stop your ball. As you practice hitting putts, stay focused on the tee buried in the green and not on the contact of the putter head and golf ball. Ideally, you can swing the putter through the gate without thinking or watching. If the tendency is to hit one tee or the other, get curious as to how to miss it. Not watching the ball may sound funny but, it works. It is only a putting drill you are doing on a practice putting green. It will not change your score on your scorecard or your payout for the day!

Putting Training Aid That Will Work With Any Putting Theory

We get asked all of the time about different putting theories and the best putting training aid to use to help implement the putting theory into their putting stroke. Obviously our students must first must decide if they are going to putt in an arc or use the straight back and straight through putting method. In this article we will discuss the TOMI Putting System and how it can help you no matter which putting theory that you use.

Putting Training Aid – The TOMI Putting System
You will feel like you are taking a personalized putting lesson from one of the world's top putting instructors, Marius Filmalter whenever you are using the TOMI. Tomi records the most critical parameters of your putting stroke in real-time. Tomi shows you what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong, tells you how to fix it and even gives you the drills you need to become a great putter.

TOMI evaluates your putting stroke and Marius gives you constructive feedback on how to perfect your putting stroke. Tomi captures, records and gives real-time feedback on your stroke. The TOMI can be used for both putting theories.

The above putting training aids will help you develop a better putting stroke. You need to first decide which whether you are going to implement the straight back and straight through putting method or if you are going to putting in an arc. Once this decision is made, then you can choose the putting training aid that will work for you and will help you lower your scores.

Putting Training Aids To Make More Putts

Putting, putting, and putting! When will you start to believe that you can hit a bad drive and recover but when you hit a bad putt the stroke is gone forever! There are many good putting training aids to help you improve your putting and putting stroke. Here are just a few:

How about we start with the hole itself. Several putting training aids can help you learn precisely where your ball should enter the hole in order to reliably drop in at the end of a putt. The Bullseye Cup is a simple tool that wraps around the cup, reducing the cup by nearly a third. The two-inch opening in the Bullseye’s wraparound helps you visualize the precise angle of entry that will or will not work when you putt. Once you are familiar with this visualization, you can remove the Bullseye Cup and putt with the same precision unaided.

Mirrors are also highly important in terms of putting training aids. This is a classic tool, and a simple one, but it is long trusted for a reason: it really helps. The best way to perfect your putting stroke is to really be able to see what you are doing. You can probably tell when your golfing partners are not quite straight, or are over compensating, right? But everyone knows it is harder to see yourself with the same accuracy. There are several putting alignment mirrors by Izzo and other trusted brains that help you get a full view of your stance and motion on a putt. The Putting Alignment Mirror from Eyeline Golf can be easily carried in your golf bag for a quick check before a round. Izzo’s Pure Putt Putting Mirror is durable and lightweight putting training aid. In addition, it can help you correct your shoulder position during both indoor and outdoor practice.

The Pendulum Putting Rod

Holing more putts is always on every golfers mind whether they are playing a casual round of golf or playing for the Club Championship. As my students are always looking to improve their golf game, I keep preaching that a putting training aid is the quickest way to lower their scores. Remember, the majority of the strokes that you take during a round of golf are taken on the putting green.

The Pendulum Putting Rod helps you with critical fundamentals of the sought after in a pendulum putting stroke. This putting training aid will give you a perfect one-piece connection between the shoulders, arms, and hands. The Pendulum Putting Rod will allow you to feel your perfect posture throughout the entire putting stroke. If you change your spine angle, The Pendulum Putting Rod will fall from your chest. In addition, you will be able to monitor your putter shaft angle at address and all of the way through impact. Hence, you will have a consistent putter loft which will equate to consistent distance control.

As many of our students seem to think practicing their putting is like a trip to the dentist, putting training aids such as the Pendulum Putting Rod give our students instant feedback that is very easy to understand whether they made a good stroke or not. What will typically happen after our students spend just a few sessions with the putting aid is they have more confidence that they are making the correct stroke and therefore hole more putts. Is it not funny how holing more putts and shooting lower scores always equates into having more fun? But the cycle will start again. They think they “have it” and will go for a period of time without practicing their putting and fall back into the same rut. Do not let that happen to you!

Putting Training Aid - The Tomi

With all of the complex putting training aids on the market these days, it is difficult to know what to trust and what not to trust. VGS Golf has found a putting training aid that is the real deal.

Using your very own putter and The Tomi putting training aid you can capture information such as the alignment of the putter face at the point of impact, the speed of the putter head, the direction that the path of your stroke will take during the motion, the amount of rotation of the putter face on the backswing as well as the amount of rotation of the putter face on the forward swing. After capturing and recording the information on your putting stroke, The Tomi putting training aid will give you real time feedback on your putting stroke. The Tomi putting training aid records the most critical parameters of your putting stroke in real-time. Tomi shows you what you're doing right as well as what you're doing wrong. Then tells you how to fix your problem by giving you the putting drills that you will need to become a great putter.

So how does this putting training aid work? The TOMI putting training aid evaluates a putting stroke and with the use of the software, Marius will give you constructive feedback on how to improve your putting stroke. The Tomi Putting System captures, records and gives real-time feedback on your stroke. You will feel like you are taking a personalized putting lesson from one of the world's top putting instructors, Marius Filmalter whenever you are using the unit.

Putting Drill - Improve Your Lag Putting

After a round of golf when my student's come to me about their putting woes, they want a putting drill to fix the problem. I always ask them the same question to get to the real problem. Did you miss the majority of your putts due to distance or due to direction is the magic question. Typically when answered honestly the answer is due to distance and not direction. Having a putt from 30 feet, the typical amateur will miss that putt more long and short than they will miss the putt from side to side. We head towards the practice putting green a I give my students a simple putting drill to help them control their speed which results in better lag putts and fewer three putts.

The easy putting drill that I give to many of my students to improve the pace of their putts starts with five golf balls and three tees. Stick the tees into the putting surface 20, 30 and 40 feet from a hole. The goal is to putt five balls in a row from each tee to within three feet of the hole. You want to have all five balls stop within the length of your putter from the hole. With most putters being 34 to 36 inches this will give you approximately a six foot circle around the hole.

The trick is to not hit two balls form the same spot. You typically do not have the same length putt twice in a row while on the golf course so why practice it that way? For example, Start at 40 feet, then go to 30 feet and then to 50 feet. This will not allow you to groove any one location and will force you to improve the speed of your putts. The other thing that this putting drill will help you with is as you get the third and fourth ball into the circle the pressure will mount to make a good stroke on the fourth or fifth putt. This is a good thing. Again, this is how it will happen on the golf course.

Putting Training Aids To Lower Your Scores

We are always getting asked for our opinion on what the best putting training aid will be for a student. Below are the two that we really like a lot and have helped many of our students.

Putting Training Aid - Putting Laser
The EyeLine Putting Laser Line makes lowering golfers scores much easier. The Putting Laser Line quickly attaches to the putter shaft and immediately allows you to see a line square to the putter face and on the target line and will insure that you are setup squarely to every putt. The Putting Laser Line is delivered with an instructional DVD. With the Putting Laser Line, a golfer can track your stroke perfectly during your backswing and follow-through.

Putting Training Aid - Putting Square System
This putting training aid is perfect for someone who believes the Dave Pelz straight back and straight through method of putting. The mirrored Putting Square System allows a golfer to monitor that their eyes are over the ball and monitor that their shoulders are lined up with the face of the putter square to the target line. The Putting Square System has changeable side rails that force the player to practice a perfect back and through stroke.

Putting Training AidPutting and Chipping Brace
The Putting and Chipping Brace from Eyeline Golf is a helpful golf training aid. The changable strap allows the putting and chipping brace to fit all golfers. The putting and chipping brace goes on your leading wrist and it will keep your forearms at a consistent distance from each other, keeping you in "one piece." Improve your putting stroke and short game with this golf training aid today!

Again, these training aids have help many VGS students and can help you improve your putting stroke and lower your scores.

Golf Putting - Make More Putts

Everyone has heard the quickest way to lower you scores is to improve your golf putting. As it is more than half of the strokes that you take, golf putting is the most important part of the game. So what is important when it comes to the golf putting stroke? Really, two things are very important, direction and distance.

My students ask me all of the time if direction more important or is distance more important when it comes to the golf putting stroke? Most instructors will tell you that distance is more important on every single putt. I disagree to an extent. Let me explain.

I believe that when golf putting mid to long range putts distance is more important than direction. I use this example with my students when I am giving them a golf putting lesson. If you are attempting a 30-40 foot putt, you are going to tend to miss this putt more short and long with your distance control. Rarely will you miss this putt more right or left than you miss short or long.

Where I differ with most other golf instructors is on a short putt of 3-4 feet. I believe direction is more important as you mind/body or your athleticism will give you the speed that you will need and it is more important that you keep the golf ball started on the correct target line while golf putting.

Go out to the putting green and drop some balls from just 2-3 feet. Your body will know how hard to hit it just concentrate on your line. This will be good for you for a couple of reasons. First, you will get to see if you are starting the ball online while you are putting. Second, you will see the golf ball go into the hole multiple times and you will carry that positive image with you onto the golf course.

Remember, a missed putt will cost you one stroke every single time. You may be able to recover from a bad drive or a less than great iron shot however, that is not possible with a putt. This is why everyone places so much pressure on themselves over those three footers.

Bob Rotella - The Rotella Collection

As many golfers are challenged with facing intimidating golf course layouts, Bob Rotella has clearly mastered the art form as it applies to the tee shot over water and the three-foot putt. Believe it or not, it all started as somewhat as an accident. Rotella was asked to speak to the Golf Digest Panel of teachers and players. At the time Rotellea was not a big golfer and had played golf only occasionally 20 years ago. Sitting on the panel were teachers and players like Bob Toski, Paul Runyan, Davis Love Jr., Peter Kostis, Jim Flick, Cary Middlecoff and Sam Snead. How would you like to speak to that group? Many had warned Rotella that the hardest sell in the room would be Sam Snead and Rotella was not surprised when the first hand up at the conclusion of his remarks was Snead’s. To the surprise of many Snead simply said, “I hate to think how many U.S. Opens I would have won if I had heard someone a long time ago say some of the things you just said.”

Use the Rotella Collection to have your own sports psychologist with you all of the time. The Rotella Collection includes all of the best from Bob Rotella such as Golf is a Game of Confidence, Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, Putting Out of Your Mind & The Golf of Your Dreams. Dr. Bob Rotella, whose clients include Nick Price, Davis Love III, Tom Kite and Pat Bradley, is firmly established as the premier performance enhancement specialist in the golf world. This extraordinary package includes 4 of his classic golf audio books. Retail Value $75.00!

Stop Three Putting With These Three Drills

Three putts get into everyone's crawl. As we all know most of the strokes that we take during a round of golf occur on the putting green and three putts do not help at all. Most amateurs are eager to learn how to get rid of three putts to help improve their putting and help lower their scores.

Many players think that the game is all about making birdies. In my opinion that just depends at what level you are currently playing at. A beginner can not expect to make birdies, so they need to set "personal par" or goals for themselves. As you improve you will re-evaluate this and change them as needed.

As you improve you will learn and realize that better players rarely three putt. This means that they are making putts and are confident putter under pressure. The better golfers work at it and it will take some practice time to work with your stroke as well.

In the article Get Rid Of Three Putts at VGS Golf you will find three putting drills that will improve your putting no matter what yoru skill level is and will improve your scores. For example here is an easy putting drill that will help you eliminate three putts. After you line up a short two to three foot putt. Simply, close your eyes. Closing your eyes will encourage you to really feel the movement of your arms and you will find that the slower your arms move, the more consistent you will putt. You will also become much better at your distance control.

The Putting Yips

The Wireless Golf Coach gets asked all of the time about how to stop the putting yips. In reality, the challenge is usually not a mechanical problem, but a mental hitch. A lack of confidence is typically the reason why golfers get "the yips" while putting. If you are suffering froma case of teh yips try the drills below to improve your putting.

This first putting drill can be done at the golf course, home or at the office. We will start without a golf ball and by simply making some putting strokes. Lighten your putting grip pressure until you can feel the weight of the putter head back and through. On each stroke, hold your finish position for a count of three seconds. In addition, if you are at the golf course, make some strokes with your eyes closed with no target. This will allow you to feel your putting stroke.

Get a pre-shot routine. Routines are used in other sports so the players can relax themselves. Golf is not any different. Baseball batters have their routines as they step into the batter box and basketball players have their routines at the free throw line to relax themselves. Read How To Develop A Pre-Shot Routine and you will be able to implement it the very next time that you are on the putting green. Your pre-shot routine can begin with something as easy as lifting your right thumb off of the putter grip and then placing your thumb back on the grip. Your pre-shot routine should also include the number of times you look at the putting cup. On paper, your routine may look like this: thumb up, thumb down, look at hole, look at ball, putt. As you use this routine, you will gain a rhythm. You will use this rhythm to flow into your putting stroke.

Putt with your gut. Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia have gone back and forth with using a belly putter as wellas a regular length putter in order to beat the yips. Why use a belly putter? A belly putter will create a true pendulum putting stroke by eliminating the small muscles in your hands from the motion. This lack of hand motion will create consistency for your putting stroke and shun the putting yips. To use a belly putter, anchor the putter to a point on your midsection or "belly." Everyone likes their belly putter in a different spot, so go ahead and experiment with different lengths as well as where you exactly put it on your body. Take your set-up allowing your arms to hang naturally and make your regular putting stroke as you would with a "standard" length putter. When you finish your stroke, hold your finish until you can count slowly to three.

Overhaul your putting stroke. As you have practiced for X amount of years with the putting grip you have. It may be the time to overhaul your putting grip as a last resort. Since your brain is currently programmed to "yip" using your current putting grip, simply change your putting grip. These days there are no rules on putting grips. You can go from the over-lap to the ten-finger to the claw grip. By radically changing your putting grip, your brain will need to reprogram all of its circuits and will start with a clean slate.

Now you can go to the putting green and putt your way to lower scores. See you on the practice putting green.

Stan Utley And Putting In An Arc

Many people think a golf training aid or a golf instruction book must be too good to be true. If you are planning to automatically cut off ten strokes from your score, then you proabaly will be disappointed. I am sure that you have heard it said, "if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

With this in mind, which training aids or golf books will help you improve your game? Below is a putting aid and a golf book that you can use together to improve your putting stroke.

1. The Putting Arc Deluxe - Your putting stroke will improve because this golf training aid is based upon natural body movement. This body movement can be quickly learned and repeated. With regular use, the results can be seen in a short period of time. The putter head travels in a perfect circle (radius R). The projection of this circle on the ground is an ellipse in the shape of The Putting Arc Deluxe. The putter is always on plane and the intersection of this plane with the ground is a straight line, the ball or target line. With the Putting Arc Deluxe, the club face is always square to the above plane. In addition, it is only square to the ball target line at the center line of the Putting Arc. You are learning an inside to square to inside putting stroke. In this perfect putting stroke, there is only one moving part. The hands, arms and shoulders rotate as one unit and no manipulation of the hands or arms are required to follow the correct path with a correct clubface.

2. The Art of Putting by Stan Utley - In The Art of Putting, Stan Utley's golf book outlines his putting fundamentals for players of all levels, from beginners to very skilled. Stan Utley'seasy to understand method will allow you to develop a repeatable stroke. Utley introduces you to the fundamentals of the proper grip, posture, alignment, and stroke. The Art of Putting will give you guidelines for finding the correct putter for you and the type of stroke you have. In addition, how a putt should sound and how to read greens properly. No matter what your current skill level is, Stan Utley keeps his theories easy to read and to implement for all players from beginners to skilled players in The Art of Putting. Everyone can enjoy this easy to read golf instruction book.

Three Ways To Improve Your Putting Stroke

Here are three ways to improve your putting stroke and eliminate three putts:

PUTTING - KEEP A STABLE BASE -This drill will help you keep your lower body in place during the putting stroke. Take your putting stance.

PUTTING - KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL -You should hold your head still to keep the putter on path throughout the stroke and there are many ways to do this. If you travel, you can practice this at home or in a hotel room. Take your putting stance. Make sure the top of your head is touching the wall and as you take your putting stroke you should not be able to feel your head move off of the wall.

PUTTING DRILL- KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED - After you line up a short two to three foot putt. Simply, close your eyes. Closing your eyes will encourage you to really feel the movement of your arms and you will find that the slower your arms move, the more consistent you will putt. You will also become much better at your distance control.

Perfect Entry System - A Putting Training Aid That Works

Do right to left putts scare you? Are left to right putts keeping you from lowering your scores? If so then the Perfect Entry System is for you. The Perfect Entry System the only system in the world that teaches and trains players to read the speed as well as the line of a putt. Many players do not realize that there is more than one way to make a putt. Most think that a putt only goes into the cup when it is hit on the correct line at the correct speed. That is only one way. Depending on how much break is in the putt, this just simply may not be true. You can go to the putting green and test this by hitting breaking putts at different speeds. The more you use the Perfect Entry System during your practice session, the better at determining the best line for you to make the putt.

A Must Have Putting Aid And Putting Instruction Book

Like many weight-loss diets, many people think a putting training aid or a golf instruction book are too good to be true. Many of the ads for golf training aids come along with hefty claims such as being able to knock ten strokes off of your game or by cutting you handicap in half. You have learned that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. So which training aids or golf books will help you improve your game? Below is a putting aid and a golf book that you can use in unison to improve your putting indoors or out.

1. The Putting Arc Deluxe
Your putting stroke will improve because this golf training aid is based upon natural body movement. This body movement can be quickly learned and repeated. With regular use, the results can be seen in a short period of time. The putter head travels in a perfect circle (radius R). The projection of this circle on the ground is an ellipse in the shape of The Putting Arc Deluxe. The putter is always on plane and the intersection of this plane with the ground is a straight line, the ball/target line.

2. The Art of Putting by Stan Utley
In The Art of Putting, Stan Utley’s golf book outlines his putting fundamentals for players of all levels, from beginners to very skilled. Stan Utley’s easy to understand method will allow you to develop a repeatable stroke. Everyone can enjoy this easy read instruction book.

We ship from different locations throughout the US allows us to service you in timely manner no matter where you live such as Rancho Cucamonga, California, Allentown, Pennsylvania, San Luis Obispo, California, Queens, New York, Dayton, Ohio, Santa Clarita, California, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Gainsville, Florida.

3 Ways To Improve Your Lag Putting

Are you having trouble with your lag putting? Seems like you just can not get it close? Here are three ways to improve your lag putting while on the practice putting green.

  1. Stroke some putts with your eyes closed. It is okay, you will not hurt naybody! Well, you should not hurt anybody. HAHA. Start with a short putt of three feet just to make sure. You will keep your eyes closed after you strike the putt. Before opening your eyes guess where the ball ended. Did you get it right? This will improve your putting in a hurry.
  2. Underhand balls and make them roll to the hole. It is like bowling wihtout taking the steps. You will need to visualize how the ball will roll just like a real putt. Make sure your follow through is longer than your backswing of your arm and hold your finish until the ball is done rolling.
  3. Take three balls and find a spot 20 feet from the edge of the green. Pick a spot where the collar meets the green and this becomes your target. Stroke putts at this spot. Repeat from 30, 40 and 50 feet. Taking the hole out of the equation, you will be able to focus on the distance.

Are Your Putting In An Arc? You Should Be!!!

Are Your Putting In An Arc? You Should Be!!! says Stan Utley who has worked with many top professionals and beleives that the club should work around you with your spine being the axis of the putting stroke. Using your spine as the "hub" of the wheel, the putter head will move in an arc on its own. In order to move the putter head straight back and straight through or to use the Dave Pelz method, you will have to manipulate the putter. Most golfers find it difficult to be consistent with this method.

A training aid that Stan Utley endorses is The Putting Arc. Clicking on the link will give you all of the technical information on The Putting Arc.

We have customers throughout the US such as Costa Mesa, California, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Madison, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Santa Clara, California, Charleston, West Virginia, Inglewood, California and Olympia, Washington. Even if you are a good putter, you must have at least one area that you can improve within your putting. If not, you probably would be playing the LPGA or PGA tour. With better putting, you will lower your scores sooner than later.

By acknowledging that this is always room for improvement and tracking your putting, you have already taken the first step to lowering your scores.

Why Hitting Solid Putts Is Important

Looks like the weather has not helped the Nationwide Tour today. As I flipped on The Golf Channel, the Nationwide Tour had been under a weather delay and Jason Buha was interveiwing Kelly Grunewald on the putting green. Kelly is T8 after round one and is in need of a good finish to get into the Nationwide Tour Championship.

Since Kelly did not want to talk about numbers, Jason asked him about his long putter that he switched to this week and how his putting. Kelly said that he went back to the long putter after using a short putter for the last year and a half because he felt like he could control his distances better. This is against the typical thinking of using a long putter. Interestingly enough, Kelly then states since he felt like he was able to hit putts solid allowing him to better control his distance. Food for thought.

Are you more Dave Pelz or Stan Utley?

When it comes to putting, there are basically two ways to do it.

Dave Pelz is the "guru" that advocates the swing straight back and straight through methodology. Phil Mickelson includes Dave Pelz as part of his "performance team." Dave Pelz teachings would have you keep you putter head and putter face stay square to the hole or target line. Using this theory, many find that a center shafted putter is helpful. Pelz spells out his theories in The Putting Bible.

Stan Utley advocates swinging the putter on a putting arc. When the putter head swings back it swings in an arc motion using your spine as an axis. The toe of the putter will open on the way back and release on the forward swing. Using this theory, many find that a rear shafted putter is helpful. Stan Utley's clients include: Peter Jacobson, Jay Haas and Roland Thatcher, current leading money winner on the Nationwide Tour. Utley shares his ideas of putting in his book The Art of Putting.
