Golf Lessons

As the golf season is in full swing all over the country now, many players are wondering how they can improve their games. We receive many questions at our academy and through our blog about golf lessons. Below are a couple of the most common questions that we get about taking a golf lesson. If you have any other questions feel free to submit them to the VGS Golf Blog and we may use it as a post.

Do I need to take a golf lesson?

Technically, no. You do not have to take golf lessons or golf instruction. With this being said, it will take you longer to learn the game and could bring un-needed frustration to you. Especially as you begin to learn the game it is a good idea to take golf lessons & instruction. Would you try to sky dive or ski without first having lessons or would you just try to figure it out? You will be able to learn the proper golf swing fundamentals from your golf instructor and this will give you a good foundation to build on as you learn to play the game.

So many people claim that they have the answers to how to play better golf. How do I find a qualified golf instructor?

There are many ways to find a qualified golf instructor. It is a lot like finding a new doctor or accountant after re-locating to a new city. Ask your co-workers, friends and fellow golfing buddies for the experiences that they have had. You can locate a local golf instructor through PGA.com that is close to you. The PGA offers certifications in teaching and these instructors are few and far between. If you are close proximity to one you are lucky and should take that opportunity.

Let us know how your game is progressing.

Golf Swing Alignment

Here is how you can go about properly setting your golf swing alignment so you can hit better shots:

1. Pick your target
Yes this is as basic as it sounds. Where do you want the ball to end up in the fairway or on the green? What many mid to higher handicappers do not understand here is that does not always mean the center of the fairway or the target has to be the flag. Where will you be most comfortable hitting this shot to and what gives you an easy next shot?

2. Pick your target line
Your target line is the line that you intend to start the ball. This does not have to mean you’re your target line should point directly at your target. For all of your right handed slicers out there, this will be left of your target because the ball will work back to the right.

3. Pick a spot on your target line
As you start the process form behind the ball, pick a spot. This spot should be just a foot or two in front of the ball. It can be an old divot, ball mark or a change in the color of the grass. In your mind draw a straight line between this spot and the ball.

4. Approach the ball
Now the important part is to not walk towards the golf ball but to circle around and walk into the ball so that you are parallel with this line that is made by the ball and your spot.

5. Address the ball squarely
Following the above steps should allow you to address the ball so your body is parallel to your target line which again is where you want the ball to start.

Address Position: Is Yours Correct?

Many golfers (not just beginners) struggle with properly setting up to the golf ball. Below are three questions that we constantly address in our lessons with our students of all levels. Use this information to make better golf swings and lower your scores.

Where should your weight be?
This is probably the most overlooked fundamental by high handicappers as well as lower handicappers. This question really relates to balance. You will hear teachers briefly say that balance is important in the golf swing. However, it is usually brushed over and not explained. Balance comes in two forms, side-to-side as well as front-to-back. You can check your balance by simply moving your weight around from your heels to your toes or side-to-side. You will want your balance to end up underneath the middle of your shoe or underneath your shoe strings.

How far away from the golf ball do you stand?
Obviously this will change depending on the golf club that you have in your hand as they are different lengths. However, what should not change is that you arms should hang down while in the address position. Men, you can pretend that you have a tie on and let it hang to the end of the club. Ladies you can imagine that you have a long strand of pearls on that will fall and hit the end of the golf club. With this as well as finding your balance, you should be in a good address position.

Where should the ball go in your stance?
If you learned to play golf back in the day you were told that the ball must go into a different position for each club. Modern instruction has made that a lot easier for you. To place the ball correctly in your set up position, simply place the middle of the club head in the middle of your feet. If it is a wood or hybrid, find the center of the club head and it will go in the middle of you stance and the ball will be place right in front of the club head.

Golf Tips From PGA Professionals

You can find golf tips anywhere on the internet, on TV or your buddies usually full of information. You need to make sure that you are receiving and implementing good information into your golf swing. Reading or watching golf tips from the top instructors or from a PGA Professional is your best bet to get good information and improve your golf swing. Here are 4 golf tips from PGA Professionals that will help you improve your game:

1. Balance is an overlooked part of the golf swing. You must be in balance at address or else you will need to manipulate the golf club during the swing. If you begin the swing out of balance, you are making swinging the golf club more difficult than it really is. To find your balance, take your stance and simply feel your weight go back and forth between your toes and your heels until you find your center. Once your center is found you may need to move closer or farther away from the golf ball with your feet.

2. Staying on the theme of balance, once you are in your finish position, you should be able to hold your finish without wiggling on your feet or being so out of balance that your feet move.

3. The best way to find your alignment is by the line created by the tops of your thighs. This is much easier to monitor than you shoulders or your feet. Using the tops of your thighs allows you to align your base correctly with your target line.

4. Golfers usually make the mistake of trying to take the club to the top of their swing. The challenge is that with your spine being bent over, you do not need to take the club up. You need to take the golf club back or away from the target and not up. Taking the golf club up, will result in you becoming out of balance and taking the golf club too far back.

Mother's Day Golf Gift

As Mother's Day is right around the corner, you, like many others, are in need of an idea for a mother's day golf gift and have no idea where to begin. You can relax. We are going help you and steer you in the right direction and you will be able to find the perfect mother's day golf gift. We are going to give you a couple of hints to find out what they may want before we make our purchase.

First, go straight to the horse's mouth. Simply go to her and ask her what she would like. What an idea, huh? Whether you are a golfer or not, you can still do a little snooping around their golf bag. Do the grooves on their wedges look worn? Have they been talking about a new driver? Are they looking for a new set of irons? If you know they are going to be purchasing a new set of irons or a driver in the near future, you can get them a club fitting done by a certified club fitter in your area. You can always just be more direct and just ask them what they would like. If you are not comfortable with this, purchasing a gift certificate at their golf shop could be another idea.

Another great place to get ideas for a mother's day golf gift is to simply ask their golfing buddies. They should be able to fire off some suggestions for a mothers day golf gift that will excite her as the golfing buddies are the ones who get to hear all of the good and bad about her game. You could always give them a two or three day golf trip with you or their friends! If they do go with their friends, it would seem only fair that then you could take a two or three day trip of your choice! Oh wait, we are trying to find a mother's day golf gift for them and not something for us. Focus!

Individual Golf Lesson

I have been playing for quite awhile but I have never taken an individual golf lesson and am a 23 handicap. I have friends suggesting that I should take a series of golf lessons. Will an individual golf lesson really help me?

Yes it will as long as you find a qualified golf instructor in which you have good communication.

In an individual golf lesson, you are one on one with your golf instructor and he or she can give you his or her undivided attention. The golf instructor will have time to completely explain any part of the full swing in which you are having trouble.

If you take golf lessons in a series, make sure that you are learning all aspects of the game. This means that your one on one golf lessons will include spending time on the practice putting green as well as in the short game area if it is available. If this area is not available, any golf instructor worth their weight will take you out onto the golf course to learn these shots.

Make sure to arrive early for your individual golf lesson so you can properly warm up prior to the session. You will be wasting time that you are paying for if the first part of the lesson is spent getting you warmed up.

Beginner Golf - What is a Driving Range?

I am a new golfer and the club that I often play at does not have a driving range. Can you explain what one is and what the benefits are to the players?

Driving ranges are designed so that you, as a beginner golfer or a low handicap player, can have enough privacy and personal space to have a practice session. For this, there will be a number of pre-arranged stalls that are separated each other. In order to separate these stalls and you from other golf players, they use bag stands and tee dividers. In addition, driving ranges will have measured markers, which enable you to have a better vision of the distance your ball traveled. You will find markers at different yards such a 75, 100, 125, 150 etc

A driving range can also be used a best place to warm up. Same time, the new tips you learn from different videos and tournament telecasts, can be tried out in a driving range first. So you should utilize all the possible chances you get to try in a driving range before you get in to a real golf course and play like a pro among other group members while on a real course.

One of the main advantages of a driving is that the golfers involved in eighteen holes games a good amount of practice. When you play with a team of players, you might not get a chance to review your shots or sharpen your shots. You can use driving range to sharpen you swinging skills as well before you enter into a real course. Even if you are a seasonable player and you want to innovate or imitate some new techniques, you can definitely make use of a close by driving range before you try that in your real golf course. Or if you want to practice with a new driver or set of irons you recently bought, before you enter into a real course with that equipment, then driving range is the right place for that.

Golf Launch Monitors

I have been looking at golf launch monitors and have been thinking about buying one. I do have a few questions and I would appreciate any help that you could give me. What is the price range for golf launch monitors? Can one of these units really help a high-handicapper? Do they make personal launch monitors?

Many different companies offer golf swing launch monitors to the consumer today. Obviously it depends on the features of the unit as to the cost of the unit. You can currently find personal launch monitors for just over $200. The more elaborate golf launch monitors will go way up into the thousands of dollars.

So what does this mean to you, right? Many people think that golf launch monitors are only for the better players. This is simply not true. A mid-handicap or a high handicap can take this information and use it to improve their golf game. This is done by finding optimal launch conditions as well as the optimal spin rate for them and their golf clubs. This will allow them to hit the golf ball farther and straighter.

No matter what level or grade of launch monitor that you purchase, it should be able to give you the club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, and the position of the club face at impact. In addition, the golf monitor should have some memory so that you can accumulate data on a student.

In order to hit the golf ball as efficiently as possible, using golf launch monitors to learn about your club head speed as well as your ball speed and launch angle is absolutely critical.

In a perfect world, you would like your ball speed to be one and a half times your club head speed. To make it a little clearer for you, if your club head speed is 100 mph then your optimal ball speed would be 150mph. Ultimately, this is difficult to do as even some Tour Players struggle to get to these numbers.

They do make smaller or personal launch monitors. The one that we have used is the Zelocity Personal Launch Monitor by Vijay Singh. Although it does not have any memory on it, for a small unit it does very well. We just record the data and do the math ourselves (well with a calculator haha).

Ladies Golf And A Country Club

I have questions about ladies golf. Being and independent female, I would like to join a country club to help me with my business. What advice can you give me to make sure that I am finding the proper fit for me?

The golf course or country club should have a wide selection of ladies clothes, ladies golf equipment, as well as qualified golf instructors to teach the game of golf. The club should have plenty of ladies programs including clinics, tournaments and an active Women's Golf Association. You may also look for amenities such as a swimming pool, bars, tennis courts, pubs, restaurants, gyms and so on.

If you have not done so already, you will want to have a set of ladies golf clubs that fit you properly. If you have not do not have a fitted set of clubs, you need to seek help from a professional club fitter. You will want to make sure the golf course or country club that you are looking to join already has a certified club fitter on staff. This way he/she will be there after the fitting to answer any questions that you have or to make any changes needed to get exactly the right fit. Having a custom set is not as expensive as most people think and it will only help you play better, lower your scores and enjoy the game of golf.

In case of other games, such as tennis or badminton, men and women use same size of rackets. But in the case of ladies golf, you use a golf club which is half an inch shorter than what men use to play golf. This is just because men are taller than women by their natural physical phenomenon. This is same with all golf accessories like apparel, bags, stand bags, shoes and so on. Golf clubs used in ladies golf are normally made of different metals to make the club light in weight. This will obviously make sure that you handle it more easily, create more speed and get better results while you play.

Ladies golf bags are also available from different golf companies. A ladies golf cart bag is usually the choice made by the ladies who play the game while always riding in a golf cart. Cart bags are the heavier bags and can come with other matching accessories such as head covers and small purses. Ladies stand bags are used by the ladies that play the game walking and also use the game for exercise. Many stand bags are unisex as they all weight approximately three and a half to five pounds. The only thing that will distinctively make it a ladies stand bag are the colors that are used and are deemed to be feminine.

Golf Tips To Improve Your Set Up

I am looking for some quick golf tips as I am trying to really learn more about the fundamentals of golf. I have only been playing golf for a short time and I am obsessed with learning as much as I can about the game. Do you have some golf tips on ball position and alignment?

We are happy that you are finding the game as intriguing as we do. Have fun with the information and feel free to ask any other questions through this blog.

Golf Tips - Ball Position
Although there are many theories on where the ball should be at address, most golfers should keep this very simple and keep the club head in the center of their stance. Understand that the club head can change, depending on the type of club that you are using.

When you are swinging the driver, the middle of the driver club head will go in the middle of your golf stance. By looking at the center of the top of the driver head, since the driver head is the widest, the ball will be placed farther forward in your stance than your irons.

When swinging an iron, again place the center of the club head in the center of your stance. This takes the guess work out of where to place the golf ball and will lead to consistency in your ball striking.

Golf Tips - Alignment
You have to know where you are going in order to get there. If you are not pointing in the direction that you want the golf ball to start, then you will have to make many manipulations in order to create the ball flight that you want.

You can easily check this in a short practice session on the driving range. As you hit some range balls, lay some clubs on the ground to properly gain your bearings. It will feel different at first. This is good. It means that you are changing something.

Chips Shots

I give up. I am ready to learn how to hit better chip shots. They are costing me too many stokes during my rounds and I am not going to reach my goals if I do not do something different than what I currently am. Do you have any golf tips that will help me improve my chip shots so I am not as frustrated on the golf course?

Improving your short game and your chip shots is the quickest way to lower your scores behind improving your putting. Many players do not practice it as much because it is not as glamorous as trying to bang out the long drives. Even the best players miss greens so if you cannot chip the ball around the green, you will not be able to ever score very well.

The short game of golf is where you really need to practice to lower your golf scores, so implement the following 3 golf tips:

1. Any time that you can hit a low shit that runs the ball up to the hole as opposed to flying it all of the way there, do it. This gives you more room for error and percentage-wise you will get you closer to the hole for the next shot, unless you make the chip shot! Do not be scared to use an eight, seven or even a five iron to get the distance that you need.

2. Hold your finish until the ball has stopped rolling. Use this time to monitor your balance and evaluate the shot.

3. Know without a doubt where you would like the ball to land. If you claim to have trouble visualizing shots then explain where you want to land it out loud. This will accomplish the same thing.

Keep in touch and let us know how it goes for you!

3 Golf Tips - How To Hit Better Drives

In the past, I have been just like everyone else in that I think that I can lower my score by hitting my drives farther down the fairway. I have come to the conclusion that this is simply not true. I hit them farther into the woods! Do you have some golf tips that would allow me to hit better drives and help me put the driver in the fairway instead of the rough?

As you know, everyone is in love with the fact of trying to get as much distance as they can from their driver. As you have found out, some players are even obsessed to the point, it hurts their scores. A test with tour players was done years ago on this subject. They had them hit their drive. If it was in the fairway, fine. If it was in the rough, they had them play that ball. In addition, they put in play another ball that was in the fairway but thirty yards behind their tee shot in the rough. Believe it or not, these players scored better from the fairway thirty yards behind the original ball in the rough! That proves how important hitting it in the fairway is for all of us.

Here is how you can hit better drives that end up in the fairway without even using a training aid:

1. Make sure your ball position is correct. Many amateurs play their driver to far forward in their stance in an attempt to help the ball in the air.

2. Use a full swing but only swing 80%. This means if a full swing is normally 100mph then you are looking to stay in balance and swing at 80mph.

3. Make sure that you have the correct shaft in your driver. Many players have pre-conceived ideas that they need to hit a certain flex shaft. I would make my decision more strictly based on the ball flight.

Let us know how it goes!

3 Tips on How to Hit Better Irons

I want to improve my course management with my irons. Ironically, I hit the driver just fine. I hit many solid iron shots that end up in funny places. With better course management, I think I can get over the hump and achieve my handicap goals this year. Do you have any suggestions for me? Any help will be appreciated.

It is our pleasure to help you. Many players do not believe that they can improve their iron play by slowing down, making sure they have the proper club in their hand and improving their course management. Remember the closer that you are able to hit your irons the shorter your putts will be and then you will look like a better putter! Improve how you hit your irons with these 3 course management tips:

1. As simple as it sounds most players do not know the average distance that they hit each golf club. The key word here is average. How long you hit your seven-iron one time (downhill and downwind) simply does not matter. I would rather brag about the low score I shot after the round than the long seven-iron that I hit on the eighth hole!

2. Take the time while you are on the golf course to find the yardage to the front and back of the green as well as the distance to the hole.

3. Choose the club that allows you to make a full swing. This takes away many variables that can go wrong during your swing. The important part is then make a swing that is committed to the fact that you have made the right club selection.

These three simple course management tips will help you organize yourself so that you hit better iron shots closer to the hole. You know what comes after that, lower scores!

Launch Monitor

Why are launch monitors becoming so popular for regular golf lessons in addition to the club fittings that they are traditionally known for?

As you already know, the new technology allows everyone from fitness professionals, to scientists to golf professionals to study “the swing” in a way that has not been possible in the past. So the question becomes “How is this going to help my students?” That is why we all teach the game, right?

Here are five ways a golf launch monitor can help your students improve their game:

1. Although I do not recommend it, you literally will have feedback from every single swing that the student makes. Obviously, how much you want to discuss with the student would depend on your teaching style as well as the student’s learning style.

2. As a student begins a series of lessons, you will be able to establish a starting line or base point of where they are beginning. This is valuable because as we all know, all of our students do not automatically drop 10-15 shots after one series of lessons, especially the better players. That just happens on TV!

3. A launch monitor allows you to set quantifiable goals with your students. This changes the students mentality to I want to hit it farther to I want to increase my club head speed 3mph. As 3mph does not sound like that much, they will see the goal as easier to accomplish.

4. By using the new technology, it will show you some strengths, weaknesses and tendencies in your student’s game that you physically cannot see with your blind eye.

5. Once you have the baseline you can track the students progress throughout the series. Again, we all have had the student who gets frustrated for no apparent reason. With the stats from the launch monitor you can give them the facts of their improvement.

Do not be intimidated in these economic times. It is time to set yourself apart from the other competition in your area with a golf launch monitor. The small investment now will pay large dividends not only to you and your pocket but also to all of your students.

Series Of Golf Lessons

I am interested in taking golf lessons to improve my game. I have never done this before and I am not sure on how to go about finding an instructor for me. Do you have any advice on how to find the right instructor to help me improve my game?

We will first assume that you are a high to mid-handicapper. I assume this only because this is “typically” where this question comes. In turn, this should help quite a few people.

Again assuming that you already have formed a list of a couple of teachers in your area, I would suggest calling them or setting up a brief meeting with them and find out the following:

In your meeting over the phone or in person, you need to find out how that person is qualified to teach golf lessons and who else have they taught. I would not be looking for them to run off a bunch of names that play on tour unless that is your goal. Instead, I would look for names of people that have a similar handicap as yourself and what their progress was.

Understanding that you are not taking golf lessons from them right then and there, you will still want to hear a generalization of their golf swing theory. This is very important. It is important because this will give you an idea of how the person communicates with you. If what he or she says sounds logical on top of creating an open communication with you, then even better. If the potential instructor only talks about working on the driving range and not improving the other areas of your game such as your short game and putting, choose another instructor. Period.

Another question to ask about golf lessons is if they will be using any training aids during their lessons. Many times training aids will help you get a feeling or a visual that is difficult to grasp. Training aids are made for all aspects of the game including the full swing, chipping, pitching and putting. Sometimes you are eligible for a discount on the various training aids because you are their student. It never hurts to ask!

The last thing that you will want to know in your initial conversation about golf lessons is how the golf lesson will be summarized or how will you be given your homework from the driving range. This will vary from instructor to instructor. Some simply end the lesson while some others will email you the notes that they had about the lesson directly to you. This information should also include how many times you should practice before the next appointment.

Golf Ball Speed Explained

I am confused and need some help. Can you explain golf ball speed to me in simple terms? Is it the most important thing when trying to hit it farther?

Is it the most important? It can be argued as that as golf ball speed is in direct relation to club head speed. It is logical to think if the club is moving slower the golf ball will not go as far as long as all other variables such as loft of club face are constant.

Top golf instructors understand the relationship between distance and golf ball speed and are turning to launch monitors and other types of golf ball tracking technology. Golf launch monitors can be simple and affordable to very complex and cost thousands of dollars.

In addition, to learning about your golf ball speed, depending on the launch monitor the club fitter is using they can also learn information about the spin rate of the golf ball, trajectory and carry distance. Believe it or not, Doppler radar is used in some of the least expensive units to track the flight of the golf ball.

Golf ball speed is determined by a simple equation. The easy equation is that your golf ball speed is equal to one and a half times your club head speed. For example if you have a golf swing speed of 100mph then your golf ball speed will be 150mph. Another example would be the television announcers over the weekend said the PGA Tour average club head speed is 112 mph. This equates to 168mph golf ball speed.

With all of the new technology available to the golf world, it has never been a more interesting time to try to improve and learn about your game. A great way to do that is through a golf club fitting with a launch monitor. Since the technology is becoming more affordable, many players are purchasing a personal launch monitor to help themselves with improving their very own game.

Hope this answers your question. If not shoot us another email and we will answer it as we receive it.

Help With My Chicken Wing In My Golf Swing

I have a good practice swing but when I swing the driver hitting the actual shot most of the time I will do a form of chicken wing swing I know what the problem is but don't know the answer seems the harder I try not to cut the swing off in the downswing the more apt I am to cut it off drives me crazy.

This is easier to fix than you may think. When this happens typically there are a couple of things going on in the golf swing.

First of all the chicken wing is a result of having too much tension in your left shoulder blade and left arm. Here is an easy drill that will give you the correct feeling.

Place a tee in the ground as you would for a tee shot on a par three without a golf ball on it. Take your grip and your stance with an eight iron and make a swing at the tee. With a chicken wing, you will probably have a hard time hitting the tee and you will swing above the tee. Relax your left shoulder (including the whole shoulder blade area) and repeat until you can hit the tee. You will notice the tension in your left shoulder and arm will be much less than what is was on the previous swings when you missed the tee.

Once you can hit the tee a couple of times in a row, now place a ball on the tee. The "game" has not changed. You are still going to try to make the tee come out of the ground. Once you are able to hit the tee with a ball on it, you will be amazed at how little effort is needed to move the golf ball.

The other part of this is that you are more than likely not rotating to the target on the forward swing. On a practice swing, swing through to your finish and rotate so that you come up on your right toe (assuming you are right handed). Once in the finish position you should be able to count slowly to three without falling out of balance. The "game" here is to hide all of your spikes from the flag or target. This will force you to rotate.

This is a lot of info so take it a piece at a time and let us know how it goes for you. Hopefully, the weather is good for you today and you can try to implement these principles on a driving range!

Let us know how you are doing!

Do I Really Need To Keep A Golf Journal?

My golf instructor is trying to get me to carry a small golf journal while I play a round of golf. Is it really needed?

It sounds like you have a good golf instructor. Whether you take golf lessons or not, it is important to keep a golf journal or a small notebook (less than a dollar) with you when you practice or play. It is important to note the flight of the golf balls. Do they start by flying to the left or right? Once they get to the top of their flight do they topple forward or to the left or right? What about the trajectory of your golf shots? Are they too low, or too high? Eventually after a couple of rounds of golf, you will start to see tendencies. If you do take lessons, this will be valuable information for your professional. As we all know, the golf ball sometimes tends to fly differently once we are on the golf course.

You will also want to begin keeping simple stats in your golf journal. I do this a lot by using an extra scorecard (free) and using each line for a separate statistic. You will want to keep fairways hit or missed, greens hit or missed, up and downs that are converted and the number of putts that you take on each hole. Again, you will begin to see tendencies form and you will be able where to split up your practice time to improve your scores. In addition, your instructor may find something in your stats that simply is not happening during your golf lessons.

By keeping a simple golf journal with some of these easy suggestions along with others that you will come up with in your own, you will begin to see good and bad patterns forming. With this information, you can improve your weaknesses and lower your handicap.

How To Improve With A Golf Instruction DVD

You now have bought a golf instruction DVD. Do you know how to get the most out of it? If not it is ok, here is how to get the most out of a golf instruction DVD:

Golf Instruction DVD – The first time that you watch the DVD, Just simply watch it and enjoy it. Do not try to take every little morsel of information that you can out of it the very first time that you watch it. This is not as easy as it sounds to do as again we all want to improve as fast as we can. However keep in mind the first sentence said “The first time that you watch the DVD.” Look at your new purchase as a long term investment into improving your golf game.

Golf Instruction DVD – The second time that you watch the information is when you want to get down and dirty with the information presented to you. Get yourself into a quiet place with a note book and take notes or create an outline of what the instructor is attempting to get across. The better that you understand the information at this point the better you will be able to implement it into your game.

Golf Instruction DVD – Take this information and create a plan of attack for your golf game. Now that you have taken notes and the information has sunk in a little more, how will it benefit you? Will it benefit you? I have watched different golf lesson DVDs and upon completion of the previous steps decided that that information did not work into my theory or system. This does not mean that it was a waste! I then knew that that info did not work for me and I did not have to waste my time on it any more in the future and would not travel down that road again.

Golf Instruction DVD – It is now time for the fun part. It is now time to go to the lab, oh sorry, the driving range, to test what you have come up with in your plan of attack. Again take notes of what does work and what does not work for you and your golf swing. This will give you the building blocks that you will need to build a system that works for you. This is very important to understand as we are not all built the same, come with different amounts of flexibility and are all wired differently.

Clubs Go The Same Distance

I have a hard time with hitting all my golf clubs the same distance. I just started playing golf about two years ago and I have taken a few lessons but it always seems like soooo much information. I really like playing golf but it is frustrating when it really does not matter which club I hit the clubs all go the same distance.

We hear this challenge from a lot from ladies and we can help you. The reason that all your irons go the same distance is that you are using the leading edge of the clubface or the very bottom of the club. I does not have any loft therefore all of your shots go the same distance.

You simply have to much tension in your golf swing. What do I mean? During your swing, especially through impact you have too much tension in your shoulders, elbows and wrists. Here is an easy full swing drill to fix your challenge. Place a tee in the ground. Swing at the tee trying to make contact with it and knock it out of the ground. My guess is the first few swings you may miss the tee by swinging high. As you relax your shoulders you will swing "lower" your golf swing and eventually hit the tee. Once you can consistently hit the tee out of the ground or forward as the longer tees are harder to get out of the ground, add the golf ball to the tee. MAKE SURE you are still trying to knock the tee out of the ground when the ball is added. This will make sure that your clubface is low enough to use the different lofts of each club. As a result, you will hit balls different distances. If these distances are not far enough, that is a different lesson!

Keeping A Golf Scorecard

I am learning how to play golf through the local Linkup2Golf Program. I really enjoy it and currently cannot learn enough about it. My question for you is: how do you read a scorecard? There seems to be a lot of information on the card that I do not understand.

Thanks for your question and we are going to refer you to an article that VGS wrote on this very subject. Here is part of the article and you can click on the link at the bottom to read the entire article:

Sometimes as you are beginning to play the game of golf, keeping score for a round may seem daunting at first. After reading this article, you should find scoring for golf can be easy. Many players do not keep score when they first start because they are already nervous and frustrated by their golf swing. Remember no matter what skill level you are at, having fun is the real name of the game.

We will begin with explaining the scorecard. Obviously, not all scorecards are alike. However, they all have some basic components. To start with, every scorecard has a wide column for the names of the players. This is purely for your reference. The order the names (or nicknames) appear on the card does not matter. Although golf is typically played in foursomes, you may find more than four spaces available for names. Sometimes, a scorecard will have par (we will discuss later) as a colored bar running across the card and this will allow for you to show teams more easily if needed.

Next, par on the scorecard refers to the expected amount of strokes that it may take to complete the hole for a scratch golfer. With exceptions to the rule, par is determined by distance.

Feet Together Drill

I have been playing golf for a long time and I used to take lessons from an old pro. He would make everyone do the feet together drill. I have not thought about doing this for a long time. However, I was reminded of him the other day and his memory brought back the thought of the feet together drill. Will this drill work with technology in today's equipment?

Without question this golf drill is still prevalent in today's teaching to fix many different golf swing ailments.

To do this golf instruction drill, address the golf ball for a full swing and simply put your feet together. Once in position, take a few "small" swings with a golf ball on a tee no matter what your handicap is or is not. The more comfortable you become swinging with your feet together the larger swing you can make and eventually place the golf ball on the ground. As you will quickly find with such a narrow balance point, this drill tests and promotes good balance and pace during your golf swing. Your goal is to hit a solid golf shot and not to hit it 300 yards. The feet together drill demands that you swing within your capabilities or you will find yourself literally falling down!

If you are not hitting solid golf shots, do the feet together drill whenever you start to lose confidence in your golf swing. If the golf ball keeps going to the right for a right handed golfer then drop your right foot behind you until the right toe is equal with your left heel and make some swings. This will promote the golf club releasing and in a perfect world, you should start to see the ball turning to the left while in the air.

What To Pack For Golf School

A golf school is a great place to learn how to play the game of golf or to begin the start of the improvement to reach your golfing goals. When you set your golf school expectations make sure to include the plan to sustain your strengths and improve your weaknesses after your time at the golf academy is over. This should be a comprehensive plan for all aspects of your game. Upon you return, you will have a good base or plan to go to work on with your local PGA professional.

So as you are preparing to go a golf school for the first time and are very excited. Since have not been to a golf academy before, what should you take with you so you can enjoy and get as much out of your time at your golf school whether it is one day golf school or a five day school?

Sun Glasses
Sun Block
Comfortable Hat
Band Aids or Athletic Tape
Notepad to Keep Notes
Insect Repellant
Full Rain Suit
Umbrella
Extra Pairs of Socks
An Open Mind

Many of these items on this list may seem pretty simple to you to pack for your trip. However, think back to other trips that you have taken. No mater how prepared you think that you are, there is always something that you leave behind and then you are struggling to find out where to purchase a replacement. Of course it usually happens on a business trip or when you need to be somewhere in a short period of time. By using a simple list like this one, you will be able to organize yourself as you pack for your golf school to make sure that you are prepared to learn and have a great time.

The Top Of The Backswing Is Not Always Parallel!

Although it shouldn't, it still amazes me how many people think that the top of the golf swing is parallel to the ground with every golf club in their bag! Do these people not read or watch any golf at all? Here is the low down on where the top of the golf swing should be:

The first question I would ask is: what club is being used? Swinging a driver to parallel at the top of the golf swing is a different ball game from swinging your nine iron to parallel. Think about it or go to the garage and grab both and try to do it. With the shaft of the nine iron being shorter, the club does not need to get to parallel to achieve maximum results.

The second question would be: are you getting properly coiled or loaded in your golf swing? ON YOUR BACKSWING, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU NEED TO BE PROPERLY COILED OR LOADED. Coiled? Loaded? What does that mean? It simply means that you are stretching muscles away from the target so they will want to move in the opposite direction which should be at your target. Imagine stretching a rubber band. If you do not pull it tight enough, it could go anywhere and not very fast. If you pull it correctly, it moves where you are aiming it and fairly quickly. Finally, if you pull it too far, the rubber band can not handle the tension and breaks. OUCH!

The third question that gets asked is: where do you think the top of your swing is? Ninety plus percent of the time, the student will take the club to parallel. In order to do this, the student will over turn their hips or move their right knee to allow their body to turn far enough to get to parallel. Is this a powerful move? NO! Think about pushing something heavy like a golf cart. Stand away from the cart and attempt to push the cart with your arm(s) extended. Now get closer to the cart and put your weight into it. Is this not easier? It makes it easier to hit a golf ball as well.

Three Quick Golf Tips

All of us are becoming busier and busier. With businesses scaling back the workforce, we have even less time than before for ourselves and our families, let alone with our golf. With this being said, everyone is looking for a quick golf tip.

Quick Golf Tip - Balance is an underestimated part of the golf swing by most amateurs. In your setup, you will need to check your balance from side to side (left to right) as well as from front to back. You can do this by simply swaying side to side until you feel balanced and do the same from front to back. This will allow you to find your perfect balance. Now the key is once this is found you may need to move closer to the ball or farther away from the ball to stay in balance.

Quick Golf Tip - Grip pressure and arm tension is something that all golfers should monitor during every single swing. Your shoulders and your forearms should not feel like they have any tension in them at all. To give you an example, if you take your grip and hold the club out in front of you with the shaft parallel to the ground. If your shoulders and forearms are relaxed enough then the golf club should drop to the ground. This is the feeling of how relaxed your shoulders and forearms should be during your golf swing.

Quick Golf Tip - Once you start playing your round of golf, leave your ego at home and make and aggressive swing at a conservative target. What does this mean? Do not always go flag hunting on every hole. With not playing very often you are not going to hit every shot where you are looking. Increase your chances of playing better by aiming at the largest part of the green or the part of the green you are most comfortable with trying to hit a golf shot.

How To Get It Out Of The Rough

As we are in the heat of the summer and in most parts of the country, the grass is thriving on golf courses, especially in the rough. How do you get out of the rough? This is a very popular question this time of year. Here is how you make this trouble shot easy:

As with any trouble shot, a player's first goal is to get the ball out of the rough. The player's second goal is to get the ball back on the fairway or on the putting green. The player's third goal would be to get the golf ball close to the hole.

The trouble shot you are able play from the rough totally depends on the lie of your golf ball. At this point, you need to ask yourself, "How much grass will be in-between your golf ball and your golf club face." The answer to this question will tell you what kind of trouble shot will be appropriate to use.

The more grass that would come between your ball and the clubface, the higher lofted club you will need to use to get the ball out of the rough. This may mean a club that will not allow you to get all the way to the putting green. Long grass typically has the effect of closing the face of the club which decreases the loft of your clubface. For this reason, the player should use a more lofted club than if the ball were in the fairway.

Around the putting green, the player must again use a more lofted club. Due to the bounce of the club, these shots are custom made for a sand wedge or lob wedge. The effect of the long grass will once again decrease the loft of the club and decrease the spin on your golf ball. The ball will therefore fly lower and run more than if it were in the fairway-cut grass.

How To Keep A Golf Scorecard

Especially as you begin to play the game, it is understandable that you may feel that properly scoring a round of golf is nearly impossible. With all of the rules that the game of golf has it is possible to make scoring easy for a beginning golfer. Many players do not keep score when they first start because they are already nervous and frustrated by their golf swing and that is ok. Remember no matter what skill level you are at, having fun is the real name of the game.

We will begin with explaining the scorecard. Obviously, not all scorecards for every gofl course is the same. However, they all do have some common points of interest that they must cover.

What is Par? This is a common question that new golfers have. Par on the scorecard refers to the expected amount of strokes that it may take to complete the hole for a scratch or expert golfer. With a few exceptions to the rule, par is typically determined strictly by distance. Par is always determined by assuming it would take two strokes once on the putting surface in regulation to hole the ball.

For example a hole that is a "Par 5" should take 3 strokes to reach the green in regulation and two more strokes to hole the ball. If you can reach a par five in two shots and two putts that would be a four or one under par or also known as a birdie. Conversely, if it takes you four strokes to reach the green on a par five and two putts then you would have made a six or be one over par also known as a bogey for that hole. After the round you may hear someone refer to their round as twenty over. This means they were twenty over par. On a course with a par of 72, they would have been telling you that they had shot ninety-two that day.

Ladies - Golf Course 101

Are you a new lady golfer? If you are, GREAT! If you are thinking about it, what are you waiting for? It can be great exercise if you walk and you can meet new friends every single time that you go to the golf course! We will discuss some of the questions that many new players have as they take up the game of golf such as: What are tee times?,What is the dress code? How should you tip at the golf course?, How do you repair a divot? and how many clubs can you take with you during your round of golf? Here we go...

If you are a new beginning golfer there are a couple of things you should be aware of so you have a good experience. In this article, we will talk about tee times, dress codes and tipping at the golf course.

What are tee times? A tee time or also known as a starting time is when you are expected to arrive at the first tee. Tee times or a tee time can be made in person in the golf shop, you may call the golf shop and some courses will allow you to make a tee time on the Internet. Once you have a scheduled tee time, you are responsible for arriving at the course at a time which allows you to visit the golf shop to pay your proper fees, warm up on the practice tee and practice putting green as well as eat in the restaurant or snack bar if needed. Clubs and courses vary on how far in advance you are able to make a starting time. Call the club or course to find out what their rules are. Understand, if a tee time is missed you may be charged a "no-show" fee. Again this is different from golf course to golf course.

When making your starting reservation, also learn the dress code of the facility. Clubs have a wide variety of rules when it comes to their individual dress code. Denim may be clear to wear at one club and prohibited by dress code at another club. Fashion has actually gotten into golf and wearing a Tiger-like fancy mock t-shirt could be accepted at one course and not another. In addition, most clubs only allow soft spikes on your golf shoes. It is the player.s responsibility to be aware of and know the dress code policies of a club.

What about tipping while at the golf course? Again, first check with the club or course because there are some clubs that do not allow tipping. Most do. It is common to tip one to two dollars per bag upon arrival or leaving after your round, if you receive proper assistance with your bag or bags. The restaurant and the beverage cart are typically tipped on basic restaurant guidelines.

Once on the golf course there are some common rules that should be followed. The rules of golf state that there is no limit on how few clubs you can carry in your bag however you are limited to fourteen clubs in your golf bag. In a competitive situation you will be assessed extra strokes for this type of infraction.

Before going onto the golf course, you need to understand how to repair a divot in the fairway or rough. This is important to insure proper maintenance of the golf course. On the green you need to know how to properly repair a ball mark made on the putting green. If repaired properly the turf can repair itself in a few days. If the ball mark on the putting green is not repaired properly, it could take weeks for the turf to repair itself.

Remember that no matter how good or how bad it gets, we do this for fun....Darn it!!!

Feet Together Drill To Lower Your Scores

Our students are amazed at what they can learn by simply placing their feet toghether. We get asked all of the time, "Can improving your golf swing be as easy as just putting your feet together?" The answer is, Yes! Let me explain why. The feet together drill is a classic full swing golf tip and is definitely an oldie but a goodie when it comes to full swing drills. This full swing golf drill promotes many good things such as good balance and rhythm as well as improves your timing during your golf swing. Below we will discuss the ins and outs of this simple golf drill and what it can do for you.

If you are not hitting teh bal as asolid as you wold like or one of the many players who over swing, this is a great drill for you to use in your practice sessions. In between golf shots, you can also use the feet together drill while you are on the golf course if things go wayward.

Do You One Plane Or Two?

Jim Hardy has authored the paperback The Plane Truth For Golfers. Jim Hardy's revolutionary approach is simple. No more is there just on set of fundamentals. There are two sets of fundamentals to the golf swing. More athletic players use the one-plane swing. The two-plane swing is more suitable for players of all abilities. Understanding the difference in these two concepts is a must to your improvement. As Jim Hardy always does, he breaks the principles of the one plane and two plane swing into easy-to-follow steps, complete with dozens of photographs. This extraordinary book will be the most revolutionary instructional book since Ben Hogan's Five Lessons.

The Practice T - Golf Training Aids

I am always asked about what the best golf training aids are THE PRACTICE T from Eyeline Golf is one of the golf training aids that I personally use. In addition, I use The Practice T in many of the golf lessons that I give. The Practice T is one of the golf training aids that will help you build the perfect setup for your golf swing. One of the the advantages to The Practice T is how easy to set up and use while you are practicing. You simply secure The Practice T in the ground with golf tees. My favorite part is the fact that you can easily slide the other bar to ensure correct ball position without resetting the entire golf training aid. This makes The Practice T very simple to use. It also includes a mirror so you can ensure your shoulders are aligned properly and this will give you greater control and consistency with every club.
