Golf Instruction Book

I have been surfing the internet for golf lessons. I have seen many golf instruction books and I am wondering if you can really how to play golf from them and if so how do you go about choosing one?

Great question! I like it because I am proof that you can teach yourself out of a golf instruction book. My book of choice was See And Feel The Inside Turn The Outside by Mike Hebron. I am not even sure if it is still in publication. haha I liked it because it related the golf swing to other athletic movements like throwing a baseball or throwing a football. With this being said a read everything that I could get my hands on to formulate the best plan for me.

Golf instruction books are relatively cheap, provide a good level of know-how and instruction about the basics of golf and are available just about anywhere. Walk over to your nearest book store and you will find a considerable number of books offering instruction on golf. Choose from clichéd titles like Golf for Dummies that offer good advice for beginners, or books written by great golfers like Tiger Woods’ How I Play Golf to get a master's perspective of the game. Apart from golf instruction books, there are also plenty of other golf books about the history of golf, about golf courses, about great players and their techniques that give truckloads of information about golf and its finer points. Such books are ideally suited for golf aficionados and fans who have never played golf, but would still like to know the history about the game.

Of course, the downside to having so many lesson books available to you, is that it becomes really easy to pick the wrong book. Such an experience can really kill your enthusiasm and motivation to play the game. So here are a few key points to keep in mind while shopping for a golf instruction book.

First, be sure of what you are looking for. We all have different learning styles and it is important to know what your learning style is. This way you can pick an instruction book written by an author who presents the lessons in a way that you can easily understand them. Do not buy a golf lesson book just because you want to learn more about a certain player or because a certain player supposedly wrote it. There is no sense in buying a golf instruction book if you want to know about players. If that is your goal, buy a golf book about the player themselves.

Setting Mental Golf Goals

I am currently setting my goals for this year’s golf season. I really want to improve my golf mental game but I am not sure what it would include. Can you give me a couple of suggestions so I could them come up with goals that are specific and quantifiable?

Take the five mental golf game suggestions below and they will help you create your plan. Sounds like you are on the right track!

Breathing - In stressful situations your breathing tends to become shallow not allowing as much oxygen into your body and your body requires oxygen to perform at its peak. If you practice conscious breathing during the round you will feel more relaxed, clear headed, focused and energetic, all of which are necessary for peak performance.

Be Your Own Best Caddy - I have had the opportunity to work with many very successful business people during my career. It has always amazed me how these successful people talk to themselves while attempting to play golf. At some point during their career, all successful people have had to be a successful sales person. They may not have sold actual products but, they have sold their ideas and others have had to buy-in. I often ask them how they felt prior to presenting an idea. The usual on word answers include prepared and confident.

Confidently Gather Info - How would you go about holding that business meeting? You would first gather information. Just as Annika Sorenstam’s coach, Pia Nilsson has named her book, every shot must have a purpose. Where are the good and bad places you can hit this golf ball? What is your yardage, wind etc.?

Trust The Work You Have Done- Trust the information that you have put together for your presentation and present your idea or in this case swing the golf club.

Evaluate Your Proformance - Once you had given your business presentation, you would then go and calmly evaluate what went well and what could be a do-better. This should be done while you are still in your balanced finish.

How To Find A Golf Exercise Book

I am looking to really improve my golf fitness this winter and would like to know if you could recommend how to go about finding a golf exercise book that would help me reach my goals. Is there anything specific that I should look for or avoid in my search? I am middle-aged male and admittedly I am currently not in the best physical shape so I cannot start with a rigorous golf workout program. I would like to attack this project this winter to improve my golf game and my overall health. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Golf exercise books are written to give you ready-made golf fitness programs, exercises, step-by-step instructions and illustrations can quickly transform your body and your golf game. So then the questions become: what are the components of a complete golf fitness book and what areas should a golf fitness book should cover? Basically, golf exercise books should cover the following four topics:

1. Golf strength specific exercises
2. Golf flexibility
3. Aerobic conditioning or endurance training for golf
4. Golf nutrition

Keep in mind that all four of these topics should be golf specific and designed for a golfer and not for a person looking to just improve their overall physical fitness. The golf exercise book that you choose to improve your golf and fitness should offer multiple plans for different physical fitness levels. In addition, the book should have a golf fitness evaluation in the book to determine your current golf fitness level and ultimately decide on the starting point for your golf exercise program. Using this type of book, you are sure that the golf fitness program or golf exercises you are using are right for you and the program will help your game not hurt it.

Golf Lag Training Aids

As I go through the internet for golf instruction information, I have been trying to learn how to create lag in the golf swing. I believe that I know have a good understanding but now would like to know if there are any golf training aids out there to help me with learning how to feel lag in the golf swing?

Golf Lag Training Aids – GolfGym Club 38
On of the most useful golf training aids to create lag is the GolfGym Club 38. The GolfGym Club 38 is a weighted golf club, also called a weighted practice club, the extra weight of the training aid will allow you to feel how the golf club should drop from the top of your golf swing as opposed to gripping the golf club and moving your shoulder towards the golf ball. This move is commonly known as coming over the top. Regardless, with this move you will not be able to create lag in your golf swing.

Golf Lag Training Aids – Swing Mirror By Izzo Golf
The Golf Swing Mirror will allow you to improve your golf swing almost anywhere. With the size of the Swing Mirror you can take it with you wherever you go. You can use the swing mirror to check your address position as well as your impact position on the driving range, at home, in your office or when you travel.

Golf Lag Training Aids – Callaway Golf Impact Bag
The Callaway Golf impact bag helps you to create lag in the golf swing and trains you to have a flat left wrist and develops correct muscle memory as well as better precision, swing rhythm and endurance. Practicing your golf swing for fifteen minutes daily using the Impact Bag you will improve you impact position which will lead to better iron shots and longer drives.

Three Quick Golf Tips

All of us are becoming busier and busier. With businesses scaling back the workforce, we have even less time than before for ourselves and our families, let alone with our golf. With this being said, everyone is looking for a quick golf tip.

Quick Golf Tip - Balance is an underestimated part of the golf swing by most amateurs. In your setup, you will need to check your balance from side to side (left to right) as well as from front to back. You can do this by simply swaying side to side until you feel balanced and do the same from front to back. This will allow you to find your perfect balance. Now the key is once this is found you may need to move closer to the ball or farther away from the ball to stay in balance.

Quick Golf Tip - Grip pressure and arm tension is something that all golfers should monitor during every single swing. Your shoulders and your forearms should not feel like they have any tension in them at all. To give you an example, if you take your grip and hold the club out in front of you with the shaft parallel to the ground. If your shoulders and forearms are relaxed enough then the golf club should drop to the ground. This is the feeling of how relaxed your shoulders and forearms should be during your golf swing.

Quick Golf Tip - Once you start playing your round of golf, leave your ego at home and make and aggressive swing at a conservative target. What does this mean? Do not always go flag hunting on every hole. With not playing very often you are not going to hit every shot where you are looking. Increase your chances of playing better by aiming at the largest part of the green or the part of the green you are most comfortable with trying to hit a golf shot.

Start Playing Golf

Are you looking to get some more exercise, spend more time in the great outdoors aor maybe you are looking to spend more time with your spouseThere are three basic ways to learn how to play golf.

Take An Individual Lesson - There are many other things that you would not attempt to learn yourself. However, everybody thinks that hitting a little white ball can not be that hard so they try it themselves or they have a friend teach them how to play golf. Just as if you are cooking or building a building there are some fundamental things that need to happen so the end result is reached. An individual lesson is the best way to get the most individual attention to your swing and you should see the quickest results. When first learning how to play golf, I would suggest taking thirty minute lessons and not an hour lesson. The reason why is that you will be hearing a lot of new information and you will only be able to process so much of it. The Professional should start with putting and gradually move farther and farther away from the hole. In addition, you will physically be asked to do things that you are not used to doing and you will tire quickly during the early lessons.

Take A Group Clinic - Learning in a group is another way to learn how to play golf. Finding a beginner clinic will place you with other new golfers who are at the same skill level and can turn into your new playing partners. Typically during a group clinic, the instructor will give a presentation to the group and then allow everyone to spread out on the range tee and will spend some individual time with each student. If you like to learn at your own pace this is a good place for you to start. Before you sign up for the clinic, make sure that the clinic will cover all aspects of the game. The clinic should spend time on putting, chipping, pitching, full swing and the rules. This way you are exposed to all aspects of the game. A clinic that goes to the range every meeting is not going to do you much good once you get your golf ball up and around the green. What do you do then? Learning how to putt and chip is very important when you are first learning how to play golf as more than 50% of your shots will be considered short game shots. Learning these shots will be the quickest way to lower your scores.

Golf Instruction Books and Golf instruction DVDs - Third way to learn how to play golf is to teach yourself the game through reading golf instruction books, watching golf instruction DVDs as well as actual trial and error. Obviously this will take the longest to master. However, if score is not your main objective and gaining more exercise or spotting nature during your round is more important to you then this is (by far) the most inexpensive route to take.

Short Game Books - Utley, Pelz and Akin

Are you like most golfers who think that the short game is any shot played form just off of the green? Most golfers think that chipping and pitching close to the green are what makes up the short game. This simply is not true and and imprortant part of teh game is being left out. The short game articles provided at VGS Golf cover all aspects of chipping and pitching the golf ball and in addition, we will consider any golf shot within 100 yards of the hole as part of the short game.

By definition, chipping is a shot that has maximum airtime and minimum ground time. In other words, a chip shot is on the ground longer than it is in the air. You will want to place more weight on your target side to ensure a downward angle of attack. You will also have your hands farther forward to de-loft the clubface and this will you to hit the ball higher on the clubface and more inline with the center of gravity.

By definition, a pitch shot is a shot that has maximum air time and minimum ground time. In other words, it is in the air longer than it is on the ground. For this shot your weight will be more even at address and the handle or grip of the club will be more in line with the all at address as well as impact. You will want o make contact closer to the second or third grove to put the all up in the air. This will allow the center of gravity to help you get the ball up into the air.

Currently, the some of the best known teachers of the short game are Dave Pelz, Stan Utley and Rob Akin. Once a year, the golf magazine Golf Digest publishes its own Top 100 Teachers List in the US.

Dave Pelz uses his background as a NASA scientist. Pelz came to his theories after collecting endless data on putting, chipping and pitching. Dave Pelz has determined that the proper motion for a golf club is to go straight back and straight through. Dave Pelz has written three notable books which include Putt Like The Pros, The Short Game Bible and The Putting Bible.

In his book, The Red Zone Challenge, Rob Akin breaks down the short game into very simple drills. Depending on your skill level and time commitment, you choose the best plan for you that will lower your scores.

Stan Utley played the PGA Tour for years and developed his theory of swinging the golf club in an arc. Utley has taught players such as Peter Jacobson, Jay Haas, Craig Stadler and Roland Thatcher. Stan Utley has written two notable books, The Art of Putting and The Art of The Short Game.
