Proper Golf Grip: Left Hand Position

I really want to lower my handicap this year. I really would like to learn more about the fundamentals of the golf swing including the grip. I know that my hands are not currently on the club properly and it is costing me accuracy and distance. Can you give me some help with where to get started?

In order to lower your handicap, it is important that you begin with the proper golf grip fundamentals and make sure that you know that you are properly holding the golf club. With this being said, you are on the right track!

The golf grip is your only connection to your golf club. The grip is considered a basic fundamental of golf. Bad or wayward shots are often a result of the bad grip that the player uses. The grip is the start to a good golf swing and to the start of you starting lowering your handicap.Ben Hogan believed that anybody could have a good repeatable golf swing by implementing a few fundamentals and performing them in a proper sequence. Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf written by Ben Hogan is still used by many PGA Golf Professionals as their "bible" of golf instruction. If you have taken a golf lesson, more than likely you have been taught something from Hogan's book.

Most amateurs golf grip is too week or neutral. What does this mean in English, right? Well most hold the club too much in the palm of their hand and not enough in their fingers. In addition most believe that it is natural to place their thumb on top of the shaft. Although it may seem natural to do this, your thumb on your left hand (for right handed golfers) must be to the right of the shaft to create a proper grip. It still goes back to getting the webbing between your index finger and your thumb to create a V and have it point at your right shoulder.

Full Swing Drill - Create Lag

We get asked a lot for a full swing drill to help players create lag in the golf swing. Not many people asking this question even know what lag is or what they are asking us. So, what in the world is lag in the golf swing? Lag in the golf swing is the act of pulling the golf club as opposed to pushing the golf club during the full swing. Why is this important and why would I want to do this? It is important so that you can full swing the golf club in the most efficient manner to gain the most distance while also retaining accuracy.

The best picture that I can give you pertaining to lag is to imagine that you are trying to swing a bucket of water. To keep the water in the bucket, you will start turning your bigger muscles to make it happen. This will allow you to keep the water in the bucket. If you try to use your hands and arms to make this happen the water will start to come out of the bucket and get you wet!

An easy full swing drill that can help you create lag in the golf swing is what I call the gun grip full swing drill. Pick a target and address the golf ball as you normally would. Now for a right handed golfer, take your thumb and index finger of your right hand off of the golf club. Making your thumb and index finger to look like a gun or a pistol will return the best results. Do not get lazy and let these two fingers start to curl back around the grip of the golf club. This will defeat the purpose.

This will feel out of control at first but it has helped many of my students. Pay attention to the golf club at the top of the swing. It should feel like it is dropping and not moving forward. With this you will create lag in your full swing.

How To Properly Hold A Golf Club

If you have taken a golf lesson, more than likely you have been taught something from Hogan's book.

Ben Hogan is famous for the information on the golf grip that he published in his 1957 classic golf instruction book "The Modern Fundamentals" also known as "The Five Fundamentals." Many instructors still use this information today. This book is a must for any golf library. The Modern Fundamentals: The Five Lessons of Golf was originally presented by Sports Illustrated as a five part series in 1957. This offering was made in a book later that same year. Although it was released in 1957, the book continues to have high sales and is one of the top-selling golf books even today. The book was co-authored by Herbert Warren Wind, and illustrated by artist Anthony Ravielli.

You can also find golf training aids that will help you find the correct golf grip for you at VGS Golf.
