Golf Lessons

I want to take golf lessons to improve my scores. As I have watched friends take lessons, it seems like they will buy a series of lessons and all of them will be on the full swing. I do not think this is what I want. Would it not be better for my game if the lesson series is spread out on the full swing, putting and short game?

Yes you are correct! As I have given thousands of golf lessons in my career, students always want to know how to lower their scores. These students are always asking the question "How can I improve my golf game the quickest?" The challenge is that they really already know the answer and do not want to hear the truth. The truth is that your scores will improve the quickest by improving your putting. Below is the order I would suggest that you work on your golf game to lower your scores the fastest:

Short Game Golf Lessons
Most professionals and better golfers will call the short game any shot within 100 yards of the hole. If you are just starting to play it may be everything within 50 yards. For our purposes we will call it any shot that is not a full swing. The short game will include chipping and pitching of the golf ball. Whether you take a real golf lesson or read an online lesson to understand the fundamentals of the short game, you can play the same type of game to improve. In this game, you will need to get the golf ball up and down from five different spots before you can move on to your round, the next part of your practice session or end your practice session and go home. Again this will make you feel the pressure but yet keep it fun for you.

Putting Golf Lessons
Putting practice is the fastest way to lower your scores. Yes I said it correctly. Putting practice is the fastest way to lower your scores. If you are like most amateurs most of your practice time is spent on the driving range with your driver. You can improve your golf game rapidly if make a small goal of making 10 or 20 (you come up with the number best for you) three foot putts before you play a round of golf or to end a practice session. This is a specific quantifiable goal that will make you feel the pressure of actually playing. If you do not believe me wait until you only have to make one more!

Golf Lessons

As the golf season is in full swing all over the country now, many players are wondering how they can improve their games. We receive many questions at our academy and through our blog about golf lessons. Below are a couple of the most common questions that we get about taking a golf lesson. If you have any other questions feel free to submit them to the VGS Golf Blog and we may use it as a post.

Do I need to take a golf lesson?

Technically, no. You do not have to take golf lessons or golf instruction. With this being said, it will take you longer to learn the game and could bring un-needed frustration to you. Especially as you begin to learn the game it is a good idea to take golf lessons & instruction. Would you try to sky dive or ski without first having lessons or would you just try to figure it out? You will be able to learn the proper golf swing fundamentals from your golf instructor and this will give you a good foundation to build on as you learn to play the game.

So many people claim that they have the answers to how to play better golf. How do I find a qualified golf instructor?

There are many ways to find a qualified golf instructor. It is a lot like finding a new doctor or accountant after re-locating to a new city. Ask your co-workers, friends and fellow golfing buddies for the experiences that they have had. You can locate a local golf instructor through PGA.com that is close to you. The PGA offers certifications in teaching and these instructors are few and far between. If you are close proximity to one you are lucky and should take that opportunity.

Let us know how your game is progressing.

Launch Monitor

To properly fit a driver or iron shaft in this day and age, a launch monitor not only helps you as the professional, but also gives you instant credibility with the golfer.

Technology in golf is ever changing and is more available to all golfers more than ever before. A golf professional has to be on their toes with all of the newest information more than ever before. Due to the amount of information provided by the manufactures on their websites, a golfer can know the exact information about every single club. I have personally been on the phone with a golfer and was asked a question about how much a shaft torque. Luckily, I worked a lot with the shaft and knew the answer off of the top of my head. The golfer replied to my answer with "That's right, it is right here on their website."

A launch monitor may be a little bit of money upfront for you or your club. However, it will pay for itself in very little time. In addition, a launch monitor will allow you and your students to:

1. Track the improvement of your student's golf swing by being able to establish a baseline skill assessment. This is important to those students who take a series of lessons so that you can monitor their improvement from the beginning to the end.

2. The gathered calculations of the launch monitor will validate if the equipment that the student is using in accordance with the student’s skill level. This will allow you to "scientifically" show your students or potential customers that the demo that they are holding in their hand is the best fit for them.

3. Your students can refine their short game distance control & consistency and master their 1/2 and 3/4 wedge shots by using a launch monitor. When I first started doing this, I thought that this would be reserved for the "better players." Many mid to high handicaps have found this very useful as they do not typically have an idea of what club to hit from where. Taking the average gives them a place to start from.

4. Your students will be able to improve their distance control and consistency with their driver as well as their iron by properly gapping your clubs.

5. With the information you will be able to identify improvement areas along with your students.
6. Track the improvement of your student's ball striking efficiency as well as the solidness of hit with virtually every club in your bag.

7. Give your on-course playing lessons the extra touch by using a ball launch monitor for on-course playing lessons and to better understand course management.

8. Relate to the club head at impact to actual ball flight to help your student better understand the instruction.

Although a launch monitor will be a little bit of an upfront expense for you or your club, it will pay for itself in a short time. Using the above tips, you will increase your teaching and club sales revenue and more importantly have better playing golfers.

Golf Swing Alignment

Here is how you can go about properly setting your golf swing alignment so you can hit better shots:

1. Pick your target
Yes this is as basic as it sounds. Where do you want the ball to end up in the fairway or on the green? What many mid to higher handicappers do not understand here is that does not always mean the center of the fairway or the target has to be the flag. Where will you be most comfortable hitting this shot to and what gives you an easy next shot?

2. Pick your target line
Your target line is the line that you intend to start the ball. This does not have to mean you’re your target line should point directly at your target. For all of your right handed slicers out there, this will be left of your target because the ball will work back to the right.

3. Pick a spot on your target line
As you start the process form behind the ball, pick a spot. This spot should be just a foot or two in front of the ball. It can be an old divot, ball mark or a change in the color of the grass. In your mind draw a straight line between this spot and the ball.

4. Approach the ball
Now the important part is to not walk towards the golf ball but to circle around and walk into the ball so that you are parallel with this line that is made by the ball and your spot.

5. Address the ball squarely
Following the above steps should allow you to address the ball so your body is parallel to your target line which again is where you want the ball to start.

Address Position: Is Yours Correct?

Many golfers (not just beginners) struggle with properly setting up to the golf ball. Below are three questions that we constantly address in our lessons with our students of all levels. Use this information to make better golf swings and lower your scores.

Where should your weight be?
This is probably the most overlooked fundamental by high handicappers as well as lower handicappers. This question really relates to balance. You will hear teachers briefly say that balance is important in the golf swing. However, it is usually brushed over and not explained. Balance comes in two forms, side-to-side as well as front-to-back. You can check your balance by simply moving your weight around from your heels to your toes or side-to-side. You will want your balance to end up underneath the middle of your shoe or underneath your shoe strings.

How far away from the golf ball do you stand?
Obviously this will change depending on the golf club that you have in your hand as they are different lengths. However, what should not change is that you arms should hang down while in the address position. Men, you can pretend that you have a tie on and let it hang to the end of the club. Ladies you can imagine that you have a long strand of pearls on that will fall and hit the end of the golf club. With this as well as finding your balance, you should be in a good address position.

Where should the ball go in your stance?
If you learned to play golf back in the day you were told that the ball must go into a different position for each club. Modern instruction has made that a lot easier for you. To place the ball correctly in your set up position, simply place the middle of the club head in the middle of your feet. If it is a wood or hybrid, find the center of the club head and it will go in the middle of you stance and the ball will be place right in front of the club head.

Set Up Position: Common Questions

Here are three common questions about the set up position and what you need to do in order to improve your set up position:

How far apart do you place your feet?
Opposed to some opinions, the golf swing is an athletic move. Thus you should start in an athletic position. With this being said many of you can pull from experiences playing sports growing up. If you did not play any sports when you were younger, do not worry. Your feet should be about shoulder width apart or how wide they would be if you were going to try to jump into the air. Pretty simple, huh?

How should you bend over to the ball in your set up position?
Sounds like it should be pretty easy. However many struggle with doing this properly. Unfortunately, many golfers will slouch down to get to the golf ball. This makes the top of their back round out and makes hitting a golf ball consistently much more difficult. The image that works for many is simply to put your pants pockets behind your heels. Yes, this means you need to stick your backside out a bit. Again, like you are going to jump.

Where should the ball go in your stance?
If you learned to play golf back in the day you were told that the ball must go into a different position for each club. Modern instruction has made that a lot easier for you. To place the ball correctly in your set up position, simply place the middle of the club head in the middle of your feet. Proper Golf Grip: Left Hand Position

I really want to lower my handicap this year. I really would like to learn more about the fundamentals of the golf swing including the grip. I know that my hands are not currently on the club properly and it is costing me accuracy and distance. Can you give me some help with where to get started?

In order to lower your handicap, it is important that you begin with the proper golf grip fundamentals and make sure that you know that you are properly holding the golf club. With this being said, you are on the right track!

The golf grip is your only connection to your golf club. The grip is considered a basic fundamental of golf. Bad or wayward shots are often a result of the bad grip that the player uses. The grip is the start to a good golf swing and to the start of you starting lowering your handicap.Ben Hogan believed that anybody could have a good repeatable golf swing by implementing a few fundamentals and performing them in a proper sequence. Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf written by Ben Hogan is still used by many PGA Golf Professionals as their "bible" of golf instruction. If you have taken a golf lesson, more than likely you have been taught something from Hogan's book.

Most amateurs golf grip is too week or neutral. What does this mean in English, right? Well most hold the club too much in the palm of their hand and not enough in their fingers. In addition most believe that it is natural to place their thumb on top of the shaft. Although it may seem natural to do this, your thumb on your left hand (for right handed golfers) must be to the right of the shaft to create a proper grip. It still goes back to getting the webbing between your index finger and your thumb to create a V and have it point at your right shoulder.

Golf Tips About Golf Swing Tempo

We have received a lot of questions for golf tips about hitting solid iron shots from our golf blog. Many amateurs do not realize how much tempo and moving in the correct sequence can not only add distance but allow them to control the direction of their golf ball as well.

Here are a few golf tips to help you with your golf swing:

1. The rate of your golf swing will usually mirror your personality. That simply means if you walk and talk fast, the overall tempo of your swing will be quicker as well. Examples of this can be found in professional golf. Nick Price is usually used as the example of someone with a faster tempo and Ernie Els as the example of a slower tempo.

2. You will really want to monitor the first six inches to a foot of your golf swing. Especially when we are nervous, many players will be quick right from the start. This gets many players out of sequence and then compensating moves must be made in order to hit a good golf shot as the player will never feel like they are properly loaded.

3. The other place in the golf swing that players seem to get out of sequence is what is referred to as the top of the swing. We like to refer to this position as taking the golf club back and not up. If the club is not back or not loaded, the golfer typically will grab the golf club and make the move that is usually referred to as coming over the top. This is when our right shoulder (for a right handed golfer) comes towards the golf ball and not down towards the ground. This move will happen naturally if you are in proper sequence and turn your core or hips towards your target on the downswing.

Use these golf tips to improve your game and lower your handicap.

Golf Tips From PGA Professionals

You can find golf tips anywhere on the internet, on TV or your buddies usually full of information. You need to make sure that you are receiving and implementing good information into your golf swing. Reading or watching golf tips from the top instructors or from a PGA Professional is your best bet to get good information and improve your golf swing. Here are 4 golf tips from PGA Professionals that will help you improve your game:

1. Balance is an overlooked part of the golf swing. You must be in balance at address or else you will need to manipulate the golf club during the swing. If you begin the swing out of balance, you are making swinging the golf club more difficult than it really is. To find your balance, take your stance and simply feel your weight go back and forth between your toes and your heels until you find your center. Once your center is found you may need to move closer or farther away from the golf ball with your feet.

2. Staying on the theme of balance, once you are in your finish position, you should be able to hold your finish without wiggling on your feet or being so out of balance that your feet move.

3. The best way to find your alignment is by the line created by the tops of your thighs. This is much easier to monitor than you shoulders or your feet. Using the tops of your thighs allows you to align your base correctly with your target line.

4. Golfers usually make the mistake of trying to take the club to the top of their swing. The challenge is that with your spine being bent over, you do not need to take the club up. You need to take the golf club back or away from the target and not up. Taking the golf club up, will result in you becoming out of balance and taking the golf club too far back.

Heavy Golf Club

We are asked quite often about the effectiveness of a heavy golf club and its use on the practice or in the weight room. Here are five reasons that you should be using a heavy golf club in your golf fitness routine:

1. A benefit of a heavy golf practice club is the extra weight will force you to use more of your core muscles. You will do this not only to swing the club around you but also to keep your balance during the swing. Balance is a very important part of the golf swing that is often overlooked by many golfers and even instructors.

2. It is important that you use a heavy golf club that is weighted proportionately to a real golf club. Just throwing a weight at the end of a golf club is just not the same. As all of the weight is at the far end of the golf club and it feels nothing like what you really swing.

3. Since you cannot really get any more golf specific than using a weighted practice club in your work outs, it is one of the most effective ways to increase your club head speed. Obviously, club head speed has a direct impact on how far that you can hit the ball as well.

4. Although the heavy golf club may only be a couple of extra pounds, the more times that you swing it, you will see a big difference as the extra weight and will help you increase your flexibility The extra weight will make it difficult to stop at the top of your back swing stretching you farther and increasing your flexibility.

5. It is also important to remember to swing the golf practice club both right handed and left handed. If not, you will not be giving equal work to both sides of your body and with one side stronger or weaker than another, an injury may occur.

Club Fittings Houston

As the beginning of the season is here, many golfers are looking for a club fitting. These golfers can be looking for a new driver, set of irons, new wedges or a new putter to take their golf game to the next level.

The question then becomes "How do I know that I am going to receive a proper club fitting?" Here are a couple of questions that you need to as prior to your scheduled appointment in order to help you find your answer.

Is the professional certified by a major manufacturer to fit their clubs?
All qualified club fitters go through training from a manufacturer. Many times the education is held a couple of times a year locally and your club fitter should be able to recite the last education that they received.

How experienced is the PGA Professional?
Do not be afraid to ask the club fitter how many club fittings that they do. The more club fittings that they do, obviously the more knowledge and experience that they have been able to gain. In addition, typically these fitters will have the most recent information on all of the available equipment.

Will I be fit outdoors to see the entire ball flight?
Being able to see the entire ball flight is vitally important to find the best fit for you. Ideally we would want to be fit outdoors so that you can compare launch monitor numbers as well as see the ball flight. Sometimes when you are fit indoors the launch monitor may have been manipulated to show better numbers.

What will the session cost?
This price will vary depending on the area of the country that you are in as well as the experience of the club fitter. The saying that you get what you pay for has never rang truer. Many of the large store retailers will offer a free club fitting with a purchase. Then they send out the high school or college student to give you the fitting. With what you are going to invest for the club(s), the fitting will more than likely will not even add 10% to the total purchase price.

VGS Golf performs Houston club fittings for players from all over Houston, Texas including Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe, Tomball, The Heights, Katy, Kingwood, Magnolia, Cypress, Gleannloch Farms, Rice Village, Mid Town, Greenspoint and all over Metro Houston.

Golf Training Aids

In teaching the students at the VGS Golf Academy, we use many different golf training aids. Depending on the challenge the student is working on, we find that a practice aid while putting chipping or working on the full swing can help them visualize what should happen during the golf motion as well as feel what should happen during the golf motion in which they are working to improve.

The best golf training aids will depend on what you are trying to improve. Here is a quick list of the golf training aids that they like to use the best:

The Putting Arc Deluxe – For our students who want to swing the putter in an arc this is a no-brainer for a practice tool. The Putting Arc Deluxe is easy to set up no matter if you are using this putting training aid indoors or out on the putting green. Using any type of putter, you simply place the heel of the putter on the putting arc and allow your putter to follow the training aid. With repetition, you will quickly engrain the proper feel to your putting stroke.

The Eyeline Chipping Brace – This golf training aid quickly lets our students feel the correct motion through impact. The Eyeline Chipping Brace will not allow you to flip or break your wrists on a chip shot. Breaking your wrists leads to the dreaded chili dips and bladed shots that either move just a couple of feet or go flying over the green.

The Eyeline Practice T – No matter the handicap of the student, when they first begin taking lessons many have trouble with alignment. We quickly lay down the Eyeline Practice T and these students have a correct reference for their alignment. This allows us to begin from a good position without the need to manipulate the golf club to get it to impact.

Golf Instuction Books

Golf instruction books have become a popular way to learn how to play the game of golf. So what are some of the best golf instruction books? Here is a quick list:

Five Modern Fundamentals by Ben Hogan
Although this is not the first golf instruction book ever written, it was one of the first to find mass distribution. Many of the instructors today use this book as the basis for the theory that they teach. By focusing on the fundamentals such as the grip, stance and posture among others, Mr. Hogan believed "the average golfer is entirely capable of building a repeating swing and breaking 80." If you are just beginning your golf library, you will want to include this golf instruction book, without question.

The Eight Step Swing by Jim McLean
This golf book will give you guidance if you are looking to improve your tournament preparation or pre shot routine. McLean covers what he believes are the fundamentals of the golf swing and give you some options depending on your skill level. Although McLean is known for working with many PGA Tour players, this books is easy to read and easy to understand for any level of player. In addition, we like this book because it includes advice for juniors and women golfers.

Faults and Fixes by David Leadbetter
David Leadbetter is best known for his work with re-building the swing of Nick Faldo before he became a Major Championship winner. Currently, he is working with various professionals including Micelle Wie. In this book, Leadbetter covers it all from how to take your grip going step by step to how to fix your hook or slice by addressing the direct cause of the shot. He does not stop with the full swing. He has a lot of good information on putting, chipping, pitching and even sand shots!

Learning How To Keep Score

As spring is here and many people are beginning to play the game, they supply us with plenty of questions about the game of golf. One question that we get asked every spring is how to keep a scorecard.

In order to help these newer golfers, we are reprinting the article How To Keep A Golf Scorecard below. If you stil have any questions feel free to email us and we will answer as soon as we can!

We will begin with explaining the scorecard. Obviously, not all scorecards are alike. However, they all have some basic components. To start with, every scorecard has a wide column for the names of the players. This is purely for your reference. The order the names (or nicknames) appear on the card does not matter. Although golf is typically played in foursomes, you may find more than four spaces available for names. Sometimes, a scorecard will have par (we will discuss later) as a colored bar running across the card and this will allow for you to show teams more easily if needed.

Next, par on the scorecard refers to the expected amount of strokes that it may take to complete the hole for a scratch golfer. With exceptions to the rule, par is determined by distance. Par is always determined by assuming it would take two strokes once on the putting surface in regulation. For example a hole that is a "Par 5" should take 3 strokes to reach the green in regulation and two more strokes to complete. If you can reach a par five in two shots and two putts that would be a four or one under par or also known as a birdie. Conversely, if it takes you four strokes to reach the green on a par five and two putts then you would have made a six or be one over par also known as a bogey for that hole. After the round you may hear someone refer to their round as ten over. This means they were ten over par. On a course with a par of 72, they would have been telling you that they had shot 82 that day.

Sometimes players will use a golf handicap for scoring. The handicap is the amount of strokes that can be subtracted from a player's actual score to produce a net score. If your handicap is a 20 for the course you are playing that day and you shoot a score of 85 or thirteen over, 85 would be your .gross score. and 65 or seven under would be your .net score.. This is why sometimes you will see two tournament scores posted by a name at your local club. One is a gross score and the other is a net score.

You will also find a column to record a score for each hole played. Each time you make an attempt to hit the ball it will count as one stroke. The total strokes for each hole are added up and the total is entered on the scorecard. The first nine holes that you play are referred to as the out nine and the last nine holes are referred to as the in nine. Old links golf courses went straight out for nine holes and then turned and came straight back in. Once you have completed eighteen holes you will add you r scores form the front and back nines for your total golf score.

To properly complete a scorecard, you will sign the card as well. All scorecards have a place to sign as the scorekeeper or to attest the scorecard as well as to provide the date. This will become more important to you as you begin to play tournament golf. Your club may require this for the scorecard to be valid for handicap purposes as well. Check with your local club to make sure.

Driving Range

I have what is probably a silly question. I am a very new golfer and I am wonder what exactly is a driving range and how should I go about using it?

If you are wondering it, others are probably doing the same. Thank you for the question.

Basically, a golf driving range is land set aside to practice your full golf swing as well as half shots while hitting real golf balls. You do not have to take your own golf balls every time you visit a driving range. Normally, the club or the course provides the balls to be used in practicing session. You can purchase them at the facility or with some country clubs, the range balls are included in the membership fee.

You do not have to feel uncomfortable while on the driving range, as there will be many targets available and you do not need to tell anyone where you are aiming! You can use the range to warm up prior to your round or you can have a specific practice session.

If you are warming up prior to your round on the driving range, you should be just trying to stretch your muscles. This is very true of the first few balls hit. Always start by hitting short shots with a wedge or nine-iron. This way you will start small, get some rhythm and protect yourself from injury.

If you are going to the driving range to have a specific practice session, have a plan. You should set up alignment tools and have any practice aids ready to go. It is easy to let your mind wonder while you hit a couple of shots that do not meet your standards. However you will need to remember, golf is a process and trying a new idea on every different swing.

Individual Golf Lesson

I have been playing for quite awhile but I have never taken an individual golf lesson and am a 23 handicap. I have friends suggesting that I should take a series of golf lessons. Will an individual golf lesson really help me?

Yes it will as long as you find a qualified golf instructor in which you have good communication.

In an individual golf lesson, you are one on one with your golf instructor and he or she can give you his or her undivided attention. The golf instructor will have time to completely explain any part of the full swing in which you are having trouble.

If you take golf lessons in a series, make sure that you are learning all aspects of the game. This means that your one on one golf lessons will include spending time on the practice putting green as well as in the short game area if it is available. If this area is not available, any golf instructor worth their weight will take you out onto the golf course to learn these shots.

Make sure to arrive early for your individual golf lesson so you can properly warm up prior to the session. You will be wasting time that you are paying for if the first part of the lesson is spent getting you warmed up.

Golf GPS Rangefinder

Whether you are looking for a golf gps range finder for yourself or your favorite golfer around the holidays, it is a great gift that can definitely help your favorite golfer improve their scores and lower their handicap, here is what The benefits if using a golf pd unit is:

1. Club Selection
It is one thing to be able to hit a good golf shot and a whole different thing to hit one the correct distance. When you are on the driving range or practice tee, you also need to know the distance to every practice flag. By using a golf gps rangefinder, you can know the average yardage that you hit every club.

2. Confidence
Confidence will come naturally as you are positive that you now have the correct yardage and you know how far you hit each one of your golf clubs. With a golf gps rangefinder, you can make better golf club decisions on the golf course that will not allow you to reach the trouble and make a golf swing that is well within your capabilities. This will let you make a good golf swing that is in balance and not rush your swing.

3. Improve Wedge Play
Finding a driving range that has multiple yardage markers that are under 100 yards is difficult to do. However, with a golf gps rangefinder, you will be able to know the distance for every little short game half shot. Although it will work for all teaching philosophies, this is really helpful if you are using the Dave Pelz theory of using a clock to control your wedge distances.

Golf Training Club

I am doing my usual spring thing to get ready for the golf season. Like most golfers I want to hit it farther off of the tee and I am curious about the benefits of a golf training club. I am finally realizing it may be the Indian and not the arrow. In addition, I really just do not want to shell out the money for a new driver and really have no benefits from it when it is all said and done. Any help?

Here is some advice from an article we wrote on the benefits of a golf training club.

1. Since you cannot really get any more golf specific than using a weighted practice club with your golf exercise, it is one of the most effective ways to increase your club head speed. Obviously, club head speed has a direct impact on how far that you can hit the ball as well.

2. A benefit of a weighted practice club is the extra weight will force you to use more of your core muscles. You will do this not only to swing the club around you but also to keep your balance during the swing. Balance is a very important part of the golf swing that is often overlooked by many golfers and even instructors.

3. It is important that you use a golf training club that is weighted proportionately to a real golf club. Just throwing a weight at the end of a golf club is just not the same. As all of the weight is at the far end of the golf club and it feels nothing like what you really swing.

4. It is also important to remember to swing the golf practice club both right handed and left handed. If not, you will not be giving equal work to both sides of your body and with one side stronger or weaker than another, an injury may occur.

Beginner Golf Lessons

What are my options to learn the game of golf as a beginner golfer? I need to learn how to play for my job. I have been very athletic in my past but have no idea how to hit a golf ball. I would like to know the different avenues that I could take to learn the game.

Having played other sports will help you learn the game. Here are different avenues that you can take listed in what will more than likely be the quickest way to learn for you:

Private Lessons
Depending on your financial situation, you may want to take private beginners golf lessons. Typically, you can take just one or you can take a series. There is usually a price break for the series. In addition, there is only so much information that you will retain from one thirty minute or one hour golf lesson. Again, you will want to do your homework on the instructor and make sure they are qualified and are priced reasonably for their qualifications.

Golf Clinic
A great way to learn how to play golf is by attending a beginners golf clinic. You will be able to learn the fundamentals at a slow pace with a real live golf instructor. Many times, the newer instructors are used for the beginners golf clinics. With this being said, you will want to call ahead and make sure that some of the instructors are PGA Members or have other teaching qualifications.

Golf Instruction Books
Reading a beginners golf instruction book is more valuable than more people understand. As you learn more golf instruction, understand the end goal is to find what works for you. You will take a little bit here and a little bit there and in the end will have a lot of little pieces from many different theories that will create the whole. Remember, the goal is to find what works for you to get the ball put in the hole in as few of strokes as possible.

Golf Lessons To Lower My Handicap

What golf lessons should I focus on to lower my handicap as fast as possible?

A very clear question and we will give you a very clear answer. We are always preaching that the quickest way to lower your handicap (no matter your handicap) is to practice your putting and your short game. The students that take our advice see the results very quickly.

1. Putting

2. Short game
Most professionals will call the short game any shot within 100 yards of the hole.

Golf Lessons For The Spring

Like most people, I really want to improve my golf game this spring with golf lessons. I am not sure where to start. Can you give me some help?

Well we would need to know a little more info in order to get specific. With that being said, here is some info for you and others in your position. If you have any other questions just email us through the front page of our VGS Golf Blog.

1. Full Swing - To improve your golf full swing it makes sense to take a golf lesson from a PGA Professional. This may be an individual golf lesson a series of golf lessons or even a golf clinic. Concentrate on the fundamentals of the full swing. It always amazes my higher handicap students to find out that the lower handicap players are working on trying to improve the same things that they are. Like anything thing else, a good golf swing still relies on proper fundamentals.

2. Putting - Putting practice is the fastest way to lower your scores. What To Know Before You Buy A Launch Monitor

Many golfers have created their own practice stations at home or created a portable on to take to the course with them. Personal launch monitors are becoming reasonably priced and many golfers have added launch monitors to their bag of toys. Here are some tips to help you find the right launch monitor for you:

1. Evaluate the total cost.
When you are looking at purchasing a larger golf swing monitor, what else are you going to need to make it operate properly? Some launch monitors require to be connected to a computer or a lap top. You may need more computer power (memory, etc.) than you currently have available to you on your current computer. You will also want to make sure of all of the cords that need to be purchased in order properly connect the unit.

2. Is the launch monitor technology leading edge or obsolete?
May sound funny to ask this type of question but think about your computer. It seems like as soon as you purchase it, something is out there bigger and better. You will need to determine what is best for you and your situation. If you are purchasing a personal launch monitor, then this may be fine. If you are looking to use the unit at a golf academy then you will want to be as up to date as possible.

3. What is the warranty?
As you know, the available warranty may vary quite a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. Make sure that you know exactly what is covered and what is not. Again, you want to find other users that have had to use the warranty and find out how easy or difficult the manufacturer made the process.

4. Contact the company’s customer service department.
The manufacturer should make their customer service number readily available. You will want to determine the responsiveness of the support team as well as how wiling they are to help you with your questions. In addition, find out about the hours that the support team is available on the weekends as well as any hidden charges such as weekend support charges for your launch monitor.

The One Golf Tip That Is Not Talked About

As I talk with many of my students, it seems like there is one golf tip that is just not talked about very often by other instructors.

The one golf tip that seems to be overlooked is balance. Balance at address and set up, balance during the swing as well as balance in the finish position. It is very important to find an instructor who can explain how balance works for you in the golf swing.

Balance is the most overlooked fundamental throughout the entire golf swing. It is especially important in the setup. If you do not start in proper balance, it is very unlikely you will gain it during the motion.

Balance comes in two forms. Balance needs to be correct from side to side as well as front to back. This is easy to check by moving the weight around on your feet prior to making your golf swing. Once you find your balance, it is not uncommon that you may need to move closer or farther away from the golf ball.

Many people start off pretty well. However, before they are at the top of their backswing, they are already out of balance. Again, this means that they are going to have to manipulate the golf club in order to hit a proper golf shot. You cannot time this in order to hit consistent golf shots.

Once you are in your finish position, you can check your balance by simply holding your finish and counting to three very slowly. This will give you time to evaluate where your weight is distributed and if it is distributed correctly.

By monitoring your balance in your own golf set up, golf swing and finish position, you will improve your consistency and increase the number of solid golf shots that you hit. Not only will the game become more fun whether you are a beginner golfer or an accomplished player, you will also see you scores improve.

Golf Tips To Improve Your Set Up

I am looking for some quick golf tips as I am trying to really learn more about the fundamentals of golf. I have only been playing golf for a short time and I am obsessed with learning as much as I can about the game. Do you have some golf tips on ball position and alignment?

We are happy that you are finding the game as intriguing as we do. Have fun with the information and feel free to ask any other questions through this blog.

Golf Tips - Ball Position
Although there are many theories on where the ball should be at address, most golfers should keep this very simple and keep the club head in the center of their stance. Understand that the club head can change, depending on the type of club that you are using.

When you are swinging the driver, the middle of the driver club head will go in the middle of your golf stance. By looking at the center of the top of the driver head, since the driver head is the widest, the ball will be placed farther forward in your stance than your irons.

When swinging an iron, again place the center of the club head in the center of your stance. This takes the guess work out of where to place the golf ball and will lead to consistency in your ball striking.

Golf Tips - Alignment
You have to know where you are going in order to get there. If you are not pointing in the direction that you want the golf ball to start, then you will have to make many manipulations in order to create the ball flight that you want.

You can easily check this in a short practice session on the driving range. As you hit some range balls, lay some clubs on the ground to properly gain your bearings. It will feel different at first. This is good. It means that you are changing something.

3 Golf Tips - How To Hit Better Drives

In the past, I have been just like everyone else in that I think that I can lower my score by hitting my drives farther down the fairway. I have come to the conclusion that this is simply not true. I hit them farther into the woods! Do you have some golf tips that would allow me to hit better drives and help me put the driver in the fairway instead of the rough?

As you know, everyone is in love with the fact of trying to get as much distance as they can from their driver. As you have found out, some players are even obsessed to the point, it hurts their scores. A test with tour players was done years ago on this subject. They had them hit their drive. If it was in the fairway, fine. If it was in the rough, they had them play that ball. In addition, they put in play another ball that was in the fairway but thirty yards behind their tee shot in the rough. Believe it or not, these players scored better from the fairway thirty yards behind the original ball in the rough! That proves how important hitting it in the fairway is for all of us.

Here is how you can hit better drives that end up in the fairway without even using a training aid:

1. Make sure your ball position is correct. Many amateurs play their driver to far forward in their stance in an attempt to help the ball in the air.

2. Use a full swing but only swing 80%. This means if a full swing is normally 100mph then you are looking to stay in balance and swing at 80mph.

3. Make sure that you have the correct shaft in your driver. Many players have pre-conceived ideas that they need to hit a certain flex shaft. I would make my decision more strictly based on the ball flight.

Let us know how it goes!

3 Tips on How to Hit Better Irons

I want to improve my course management with my irons. Ironically, I hit the driver just fine. I hit many solid iron shots that end up in funny places. With better course management, I think I can get over the hump and achieve my handicap goals this year. Do you have any suggestions for me? Any help will be appreciated.

It is our pleasure to help you. Many players do not believe that they can improve their iron play by slowing down, making sure they have the proper club in their hand and improving their course management. Remember the closer that you are able to hit your irons the shorter your putts will be and then you will look like a better putter! Improve how you hit your irons with these 3 course management tips:

1. As simple as it sounds most players do not know the average distance that they hit each golf club. The key word here is average. How long you hit your seven-iron one time (downhill and downwind) simply does not matter. I would rather brag about the low score I shot after the round than the long seven-iron that I hit on the eighth hole!

2. Take the time while you are on the golf course to find the yardage to the front and back of the green as well as the distance to the hole.

3. Choose the club that allows you to make a full swing. This takes away many variables that can go wrong during your swing. The important part is then make a swing that is committed to the fact that you have made the right club selection.

These three simple course management tips will help you organize yourself so that you hit better iron shots closer to the hole. You know what comes after that, lower scores!

Playing In The Wind

I live in the desert and play a lot of rounds of golf in the wind. It seems like some guys are better at playing in the wind than others. What kind of advice do you have for playing in the wind? I am really ready to beat some of these guys!

Make A Decision
You will need to make a very clear decision when playing in the wind on what you are going to do on the next shot. You need to clearly decide on the shot shape. Do you need to keep it under the wind or hit it higher to ride the wind? Are you going to move it back into the wind or float with the wind? These decisions have to be made in order to pull the correct club to hit.

Commit
Once you have made your decisions you must commit to them all of the way through the swing. If at any point your mind wonders if you are doing the right thing during your pre shot routine or as you are over the golf ball, stop. Simply back off and start all over.

Golf Equipment
I know this sounds funny, but as you are playing in the wind, many times the weather also changes during your round. If it rains you will need to have your rain gear with you with should include your rain suit and umbrella. You will also want to make sure that you take plenty of towels just in case it does begin to rain. If the wind is blowing hard enough, you may need an umbrella just to keep the wind off of you.

By implementing the three tips above, you will be better suited to playing in the wind. Remember, they do not ask you how you did it on the score card, they just want to know how many.

Training Aids

I have been playing golf for years. I would like to improve my golf swing and purchase some training aids. Where can I go to get information on training aids and figure out what will help me improve my game?

Online Golf Shop
As you know by shopping online at such sites as VGS Golf (http://www.virtualgolfswing.com/), you can easily compare prices among different stores. The product will be shipped directly to you and be ready for you to use. Do not think that you automatically will pay more for the product due to the shipping cost. Many of today's vendors offer free shipping or a shipping charge of one flat rate. You will want to make sure that the site is a safe site by the seals that they display. Another advantage to shopping online is that you will be able to find the most obscure practice aids. This could be good or bad for you. It depends if you just keep surfing or you are able to make a decision. HAHA

Golf Store
Whether you live close to one of the "big box" golf stores or you have a small local golf store close to you, they should have plenty of practice aids available. Typically, the big box stores will have a larger selection due to their sheer size and buying power. Unless you are looking for something very specific, you should be able to find the most popular training aids available no matter the size of the store.

Golf Course
If you are already taking lessons from a golf professional, he or she more than likely has the ability to sell the practice aid. Since you are already taking multiple lessons from them, they might even offer you a discount to purchase the training aids through them and or their facility.

You can easily find the training aids that you need at your regular golf course, a local golf shop or by finding an online retailer. Keep in mind that you must find the correct practice aids to help you and your golf swing or it will all be for naught and lead to being frustrated.

Launch Monitor

Why are launch monitors becoming so popular for regular golf lessons in addition to the club fittings that they are traditionally known for?

As you already know, the new technology allows everyone from fitness professionals, to scientists to golf professionals to study “the swing” in a way that has not been possible in the past. So the question becomes “How is this going to help my students?” That is why we all teach the game, right?

Here are five ways a golf launch monitor can help your students improve their game:

1. Although I do not recommend it, you literally will have feedback from every single swing that the student makes. Obviously, how much you want to discuss with the student would depend on your teaching style as well as the student’s learning style.

2. As a student begins a series of lessons, you will be able to establish a starting line or base point of where they are beginning. This is valuable because as we all know, all of our students do not automatically drop 10-15 shots after one series of lessons, especially the better players. That just happens on TV!

3. A launch monitor allows you to set quantifiable goals with your students. This changes the students mentality to I want to hit it farther to I want to increase my club head speed 3mph. As 3mph does not sound like that much, they will see the goal as easier to accomplish.

4. By using the new technology, it will show you some strengths, weaknesses and tendencies in your student’s game that you physically cannot see with your blind eye.

5. Once you have the baseline you can track the students progress throughout the series. Again, we all have had the student who gets frustrated for no apparent reason. With the stats from the launch monitor you can give them the facts of their improvement.

Do not be intimidated in these economic times. It is time to set yourself apart from the other competition in your area with a golf launch monitor. The small investment now will pay large dividends not only to you and your pocket but also to all of your students.

Setting Goals Around Why You Play Golf

We often are asked the question about how to set goals for your golf game. We always relay that when you set your goals the goals must be quantifiable. Your goal cannot be to “be a better putter.” Instead you should focus on making 10 or 20 (whatever your number is) three putt putts before you walk off the practice putting green.

For many just setting goals that are more about why they play the game have better results for them. Here are three reasons why many people play the game of golf:

1. Play for relaxation, exercise or pure pleasure No matter what level you play the game, this is by far the best reason to play the game. It is very easy to remember as we are playing well and hard to believe this is why we play when we are playing poorly. However, if you set goals about relaxation, exercise or simply finding pleasure, then you are more apt to find the good in what you are doing no matter how poorly you perceive that you are playing.

2. Lower your score This is what gets many of us is simply the challenge of the game itself. I have heard it said that the game is the world’s largest rubick’s cube ever invented. Golf has driven many people half-crazy trying to “figure” this game out. If lowering your score is your end goal then how are you going to go about doing this? Set Goals that are quantifiable such as: I am going to make 20 three foot putts in a row before I leave the putting green or I am going to hit five drives between two markers on the range before you leave.

3. Win a tournament As you set goals, be careful with this one! Here is my point. If you play the best golf that you can and lose, then what happens? You have not accomplished your goal so does that mean that you failed? I have found that setting other goals that would result in winning a golf tournament is a much better idea for most players. For example, create a plan by yourself or with your golf instructor and completing that in full would be a goal that is quantifiable. Once this goal is achieved then the chance of you winning the tournament is much greater without everything being a total pass or fail grade for yourself.

Implement on of these three goals in to your goal setting plan for this golf season. Remember, as you set goals for this golf season, it is important to set quantifiable goals that are focused more on the process than the end result.

Golf Ball Speed Explained

I am confused and need some help. Can you explain golf ball speed to me in simple terms? Is it the most important thing when trying to hit it farther?

Is it the most important? It can be argued as that as golf ball speed is in direct relation to club head speed. It is logical to think if the club is moving slower the golf ball will not go as far as long as all other variables such as loft of club face are constant.

Top golf instructors understand the relationship between distance and golf ball speed and are turning to launch monitors and other types of golf ball tracking technology. Golf launch monitors can be simple and affordable to very complex and cost thousands of dollars.

In addition, to learning about your golf ball speed, depending on the launch monitor the club fitter is using they can also learn information about the spin rate of the golf ball, trajectory and carry distance. Believe it or not, Doppler radar is used in some of the least expensive units to track the flight of the golf ball.

Golf ball speed is determined by a simple equation. The easy equation is that your golf ball speed is equal to one and a half times your club head speed. For example if you have a golf swing speed of 100mph then your golf ball speed will be 150mph. Another example would be the television announcers over the weekend said the PGA Tour average club head speed is 112 mph. This equates to 168mph golf ball speed.

With all of the new technology available to the golf world, it has never been a more interesting time to try to improve and learn about your game. A great way to do that is through a golf club fitting with a launch monitor. Since the technology is becoming more affordable, many players are purchasing a personal launch monitor to help themselves with improving their very own game.

Hope this answers your question. If not shoot us another email and we will answer it as we receive it.

3 Ways To Improve Your Golf Game

I have played golf for many years. As I guess most other golfers, I would really like to improve this year. I am a 16 handicap and have been there, good or bad, for years. Can you suggest a couple of things that I could do this golf season to make it different?

1. Re-learn the fundamentals – There are many ways to learn how to play golf that do not break the bank. No matter what level you learn to play the game, you will always go back to the fundamentals when your golf swing gets out of whack. You can find a golf instruction book written by a top instructor or a golf instruction DVD to improve your game. If you are just starting to play golf, then a clinic would be a great way to be introduced to the game.

2. Get a club fitting – Having a set of clubs that fit you specifically is very important. This is usually included in the price of a new set of golf clubs. It is very important to find a certified club fitter who fits on a regular basis. Do not be scared or intimidated to ask how often they fit someone to a set of golf clubs and what are their qualifications are to fit you. Finding a good and qualified club fitter can make the game much easier and much more enjoyable for you!

3. Improve your flexibility – This is for all golfers no matter what your age currently is. Everybody wants to hit it farther and straighter. This can simply be achieved by beginning a golf flexibility program. It does not need to take much time but proper flexibility is crucial to being able to perform at your highest level. Again, this does not need to be an expensive affair. There are many golf fitness books or golf fitness DVDs by top fitness professionals that can lay out a stretching program for you.

Help With My Chicken Wing In My Golf Swing

I have a good practice swing but when I swing the driver hitting the actual shot most of the time I will do a form of chicken wing swing I know what the problem is but don't know the answer seems the harder I try not to cut the swing off in the downswing the more apt I am to cut it off drives me crazy.

This is easier to fix than you may think. When this happens typically there are a couple of things going on in the golf swing.

First of all the chicken wing is a result of having too much tension in your left shoulder blade and left arm. Here is an easy drill that will give you the correct feeling.

Place a tee in the ground as you would for a tee shot on a par three without a golf ball on it. Take your grip and your stance with an eight iron and make a swing at the tee. With a chicken wing, you will probably have a hard time hitting the tee and you will swing above the tee. Relax your left shoulder (including the whole shoulder blade area) and repeat until you can hit the tee. You will notice the tension in your left shoulder and arm will be much less than what is was on the previous swings when you missed the tee.

Once you can hit the tee a couple of times in a row, now place a ball on the tee. The "game" has not changed. You are still going to try to make the tee come out of the ground. Once you are able to hit the tee with a ball on it, you will be amazed at how little effort is needed to move the golf ball.

The other part of this is that you are more than likely not rotating to the target on the forward swing. On a practice swing, swing through to your finish and rotate so that you come up on your right toe (assuming you are right handed). Once in the finish position you should be able to count slowly to three without falling out of balance. The "game" here is to hide all of your spikes from the flag or target. This will force you to rotate.

This is a lot of info so take it a piece at a time and let us know how it goes for you. Hopefully, the weather is good for you today and you can try to implement these principles on a driving range!

Let us know how you are doing!

A Full Swing Training Aid And A Putting Training Aid

I am looking for some help with training aids. I would like to find two training aids that will help me improve my golf game. I would like one training aid to be for the full swing and the other training aid to improve my straight back and straight through putting theory. Any suggestions that you give will be appreciated.

Golf Practice Aid: Heavy Golf Club

The best heavy golf club or weighted practice club available is the GolfGym’s Club 38 or GolfGym’s Club 28. Both golf training aids come with a Katherine Roberts Quick Start DVD. "Since incorporating GolfGym products into my fitness programs, I have been able to offer a more effective level of golf-specific training and conditioning to my students." - Katherine Roberts, The Golf Channel Fitness Expert. Good players feel the golf club throughout the entire golf swing and understand how using a weighted practice club adds power and increases the range of motion in a golf swing. Since they started using a weighted practice club, these players realize increased distance, fewer injuries and more enjoyment of the game. The exclusive club design of the Club 38 or Club 28 allocates the weight of the practice club like that of a standard golf club. This has half of the total weight in the bottom third of the club. With this type of weighting you will develop consistency by staying on plane which will lead to better golf shots and lower scores.

Golf Practice Aid: Putting Square System

This golf putting golf practice aid is for the player who believes in the Dave Pelz straight back and straight through method of putting. Through the use of the attached mirror, The Putting Square System allows a golfer to monitor that their eyes are over the golf ball at address. In addition, it gives them instant feedback so they can monitor that their shoulders are square to the target line. The Putting Square System has changeable side rails that force the player to practice a perfect back and through stroke.

9 Things To Bring To Golf School

How much should you improve over a three or four day golf school and what should you bring? Your golf school expectations should be modest and do not expect to extremely cut your handicap after attending a 3 day golf school. This is just an unrealistic goal after such a short period of instruction. Remember the adage if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. With this being said, set your golf school expectations accordingly. If the golf school is guaranteeing you to cut your handicap in half, be very wary.

A golf school is a good beginning to start your improvement. When you set your golf school expectations you will want to make sure to include the plan to sustain your strengths and improve your weaknesses after the golf school is over. This should be a comprehensive plan for all aspects of your game. Upon you return, you will have a good base or plan to go to work on with your local PGA professional.

In figuring out your golf school expectations, what should you do prior to your arrival to your golf school? Depending on how much time you have until you depart for your trip, begin to stretch on a daily basis as soon as possible. Many people will find themselves sore as they will be hitting more golf balls than you typically do. Also be sure to pack the following nine things before you head off to your first golf school:

1. Sun block (and plenty of it)
2. A large comfortable hat with proper sun protection
3. Sun Glasses - polarized
4. Band-Aids or athletic tape
5. At least a dozen golf balls
6. Insect repellent
7. Rain jacket and rain pants
8. Umbrella
9. Comfortable golf shoes and extra pairs of socks to change at lunch.

And here is an extra - Bring a great attitude to learn something new!

EyeLine Practice T Training Aid

Many of the troubles that amateurs have with their golf swing begin before they even swing the golf club. Most amateurs do not have a good setup. In particular, most golfers do not aim where they think that they are looking. Once these players are properly aligned, their golf swings change for the better since they are properly aligned at their target. THE PRACTICE T is the golf practice tool that I use to help my student make sure that they can take dead aim. This practice aid allows you to build the perfect setup before every swing that you take on the range. For most right-handed players they aim to far to the right of their target and then wonder why they come over the top during their golf swing.

When I am practicing by myself or getting ready for a golf lesson with a student, I can set up The Practice T in less than one minute and is easy to set up for use. Another benefit is that without resetting the golf training aid, you can easily change where you place the ball by simply sliding the opposite bar. This allows you to make sure that you have the correct ball position with the correct alignment and do not have to keep digging deeper in the same divot. In addition, you can make sure that your shoulders are correct by using the mirror. You will have greater control and consistency with every club.

This is the practice tool that will help you build the perfect setup. This golf training aid is easy to set up while you are practicing and you can easily secure THE PRACTICE T in the ground with just golf tees. The practice unit also includes a mirror so you can ensure your shoulders are aligned properly to your target. You will have greater control and consistency with every golf club.

How To Improve With A Golf Instruction DVD

You now have bought a golf instruction DVD. Do you know how to get the most out of it? If not it is ok, here is how to get the most out of a golf instruction DVD:

Golf Instruction DVD – The first time that you watch the DVD, Just simply watch it and enjoy it. Do not try to take every little morsel of information that you can out of it the very first time that you watch it. This is not as easy as it sounds to do as again we all want to improve as fast as we can. However keep in mind the first sentence said “The first time that you watch the DVD.” Look at your new purchase as a long term investment into improving your golf game.

Golf Instruction DVD – The second time that you watch the information is when you want to get down and dirty with the information presented to you. Get yourself into a quiet place with a note book and take notes or create an outline of what the instructor is attempting to get across. The better that you understand the information at this point the better you will be able to implement it into your game.

Golf Instruction DVD – Take this information and create a plan of attack for your golf game. Now that you have taken notes and the information has sunk in a little more, how will it benefit you? Will it benefit you? I have watched different golf lesson DVDs and upon completion of the previous steps decided that that information did not work into my theory or system. This does not mean that it was a waste! I then knew that that info did not work for me and I did not have to waste my time on it any more in the future and would not travel down that road again.

Golf Instruction DVD – It is now time for the fun part. It is now time to go to the lab, oh sorry, the driving range, to test what you have come up with in your plan of attack. Again take notes of what does work and what does not work for you and your golf swing. This will give you the building blocks that you will need to build a system that works for you. This is very important to understand as we are not all built the same, come with different amounts of flexibility and are all wired differently.

7 Things That Should Be In Your Golf Fitness Program

In finding a golf fitness program for yourself, you will want to evaluate it for the following seven points:

1) The golf fitness program that you choose must offer several variations. For Example: A long version for regular training days and a short version for Pre-Round Stretching. A few variations with the large exercise ball should also be included (extremely important for the golfer) along with a couple of golf club stretches to do just before tee-off and between holes if necessary.

2) The golf fitness program should be thorough - addressing the head and neck all, the way down to the feet. Remember, the golf swing is a full body movement.

3) It must follow a symetrical protocol - the true key to maintaining optimal muscle/tendon/joint balance on both sides of the body. This allows for enhanced golf swing power without a large increase in swing effort. And this is also very important to chronic and acute injury prevention - and hence fitness and playing longevity.

4) It must include several key compound stretches - stretches that elongate several joint areas at the same time - mimicking natural movement patterns. Allowing the golfer to be more accurate through enhanced fitness flexibility, body awareness & control.

5) The golf fitness program must be realistic & easy to do for golfers at any fitness level with no equipment except for a stretching floor mat (and an exercise ball for certain stretches).

6) It must include a series of single or double joint golf stretching exercises. The effects of these stretches increase exponentially when the specific body movement requires several of these joints to move in coordination with each other (ie - the golf swing).

7) At last the golf fitness program should feel good - especially afterward. This type of stretch routine should make you feel as if your posture is immediately better & you should feel stronger - just because your body moves so much easier & more fluidly. You should almost feel like you could rip the cover off a ball if you were to hit one right after your golf fitness stretch routine.

A Golf GPS Unit

Many of my friends have purchased a golf gps units. Can you give me some info on them and the differences between a gps golf unit and a range finder or yardage finder?

There are many benefits to playing the game with a golf GPS unit. With the information provided, one can know his or her exact distance to the green. This can improve the pace of the game by eliminating the need to step off distances from a yardage marker or using a yardage book for the course. A handheld golf GPS unit can also track golf balls that contain implanted trackers in them, making it impossible to lose another golf ball. It will not always be an easy retrieval, however, since deep water hazards do still exist.

A number of different options are available when it comes to handheld Golf GPS devices, such as the Izzo Swami 1500. They come in a variety of sizes and offer different features. Some features include keeping the user aware of the distance from targets while on the course, showing this length with one push of a button. The system shows the golfer any hazards or trees that are in the path of his or her drive. Certain systems may show hazards such as front, center, and back of the green, sand bunkers, water traps, lay-ups, and carries. For even easier access to the GPS information, there are some cell phones that can act as the handheld Golf GPS unit with the right program.

A competing technology to the handheld Golf GPS unit is the laser rangefinder or yardage finder. One advantage of the laser rangefinder is that it does not require any course data. A Golf GPS unit needs the information from that particular course loaded into the unit. A disadvantage of laser rangefinders, however, is the time needed to use it effectively. Many times, it takes some time to properly aim the yardage finder at the target. Additionally, you will need to “shoot” the target several times before the unit will lock in on the target and give you the proper information. A handheld golf GPS is a much easier and faster system to use.

Mental Golf Game

The mental golf game is a very important part of the game of golf. Many amateurs can lower their handicap by simply improving their mental golf game. This is by far the most overlooked part of the game of golf. Most players when they want to improve will go to the driving range and if they take a lesson it will be a full swing lesson. They never even pretend to think that by improving their course management that they will be able to improve their scores.

It has been said by many top teachers as well as top tour players that the mental golf game is 90% of the game. It becomes fairly clear when you think that you will hit a bad shot in mind, then you will hit a bad shot. If you step up to a shot and you are afraid of putting it in the trees on the right, then you will probably end up in the trees on the right. Keep in mind that these shots do match the picture that you had in your mind prior to executing the shot.

Using your mental golf game, you have to learn how to picture the perfect shot. The golf swing will come naturally and you will hit better shots once you fix the mental part of your golf game. You have to learn how to concentrate on the shot and the task at hand. You cannot be worried about what you did with the last shot or the last hole or how you hit the club you are getting ready to hit the last time you hit it.

You have to get control of your mental golf game in order to have a better golf swing. You have to be able to block out vehicles passing by, other golfers talking, bugs making noise, and any other noise that might happen in your back swing or during your set up. This is very important and you just have to continually practice in order to get this down. Some golfers will go to a crowded range and practice as if they were on the course while blocking out all the conversations and other golfers on the range. This is great mental practice.

Clubs Go The Same Distance

I have a hard time with hitting all my golf clubs the same distance. I just started playing golf about two years ago and I have taken a few lessons but it always seems like soooo much information. I really like playing golf but it is frustrating when it really does not matter which club I hit the clubs all go the same distance.

We hear this challenge from a lot from ladies and we can help you. The reason that all your irons go the same distance is that you are using the leading edge of the clubface or the very bottom of the club. I does not have any loft therefore all of your shots go the same distance.

You simply have to much tension in your golf swing. What do I mean? During your swing, especially through impact you have too much tension in your shoulders, elbows and wrists. Here is an easy full swing drill to fix your challenge. Place a tee in the ground. Swing at the tee trying to make contact with it and knock it out of the ground. My guess is the first few swings you may miss the tee by swinging high. As you relax your shoulders you will swing "lower" your golf swing and eventually hit the tee. Once you can consistently hit the tee out of the ground or forward as the longer tees are harder to get out of the ground, add the golf ball to the tee. MAKE SURE you are still trying to knock the tee out of the ground when the ball is added. This will make sure that your clubface is low enough to use the different lofts of each club. As a result, you will hit balls different distances. If these distances are not far enough, that is a different lesson!

Lag In The Golf Swing

I have a question about creating lag in the golf swing. What is lag in the golf swing and are there any golf training aids to help you achieve it?

Lag in the golf swing is created in the golf swing when the golf club is being pulled through the impact area as opposed to being pushed through impact. Without tension in your wrists, elbows and shoulders, the pulling action of the golf club will place your grip ahead of the club head through impact. If you use muscles in your hands and arms to push the golf club at the golf ball then the arc will bottom out earlier and in turn your club head will be coming up at the ball as opposed to trapping the golf ball into the ground and creating a divot. In order to trap the golf ball against the ground, your hands must be ahead of the club head at impact creating the pulling action. If not, then you are pushing the golf club.

The Callaway Golf impact bag is a training aid that helps you to create lag in the golf swing and promotes a flat left wrist, develops correct muscle memory and increases upper body strength. For better precision, swing rhythm, endurance and consistency practice your swing for fifteen minutes daily using the Impact Bag. Callaway Impact Bag Practice Aid features: Water resistant vinyl and overstitched seams for years of use indoors and out Optimum contact points are clearly marked Folds for easy storage and travel Soft design lets you practice anywhere, anytime Develops correct muscle memory for a repeatable swing Encourages a flat left wrist for on-target hits Promotes a square clubface at impact Reduces sky shots, hooks, slices, pulls, pushes, topping, duffing, and shanks Develops upper body strength Increases ball distance Relieves stress Lets you practice anywhere, anytime.

Golf Fitness - Why Is It OK To Workout Now?

As I am watching the PGA Tour players get stronger and stronger and what seems bigger and bigger through golf fitness, I thought that golfers did not need strength training. I as started the game it was ridiculous to think about using golf fitness techniques or more specifically lifting weights to improve your golf game. You would literally be made fun of if anyone knew what you were attempting to improve your golf game through golf fitness. What has changed to make the "experts" change their minds?

To answer your question of what has changed is simple. I can answer that in just one word, technology. With the science that can now be applied to golf fitness and the golf swing, PGA Professionals as well as golf fitness experts have much more information at their disposal. You also see this happening in all major sports such as football, basketball and tennis.

Flexibility, balance, stability, strength, endurance, and power are all required skills that are needed to perform an efficient golf swing. Your body is the support of your golf swing. You can imagine each as a beam in a foundation for a building. Some beams may bear more weight than others however, they all combine to come up with one of two outcomes, the building will stay up or the building will fall. You are limiting your potential if you do not have the golf strength but do have flexibility, balance and the other factors. You can see it while walking up and down any practice facility. Golfers are struggling to make "the perfect move" because they are limited by their body and hard as they try they just can not make it happen. A weighted practice club can help you with your strength, flexibility, balance and stability and get you closer to performing the correct golf swing mechanics.

Golf Lag Training Aids

As I go through the internet for golf instruction information, I have been trying to learn how to create lag in the golf swing. I believe that I know have a good understanding but now would like to know if there are any golf training aids out there to help me with learning how to feel lag in the golf swing?

Golf Lag Training Aids – GolfGym Club 38
On of the most useful golf training aids to create lag is the GolfGym Club 38. The GolfGym Club 38 is a weighted golf club, also called a weighted practice club, the extra weight of the training aid will allow you to feel how the golf club should drop from the top of your golf swing as opposed to gripping the golf club and moving your shoulder towards the golf ball. This move is commonly known as coming over the top. Regardless, with this move you will not be able to create lag in your golf swing.

Golf Lag Training Aids – Swing Mirror By Izzo Golf
The Golf Swing Mirror will allow you to improve your golf swing almost anywhere. With the size of the Swing Mirror you can take it with you wherever you go. You can use the swing mirror to check your address position as well as your impact position on the driving range, at home, in your office or when you travel.

Golf Lag Training Aids – Callaway Golf Impact Bag
The Callaway Golf impact bag helps you to create lag in the golf swing and trains you to have a flat left wrist and develops correct muscle memory as well as better precision, swing rhythm and endurance. Practicing your golf swing for fifteen minutes daily using the Impact Bag you will improve you impact position which will lead to better iron shots and longer drives.

Feet Together Drill

I have been playing golf for a long time and I used to take lessons from an old pro. He would make everyone do the feet together drill. I have not thought about doing this for a long time. However, I was reminded of him the other day and his memory brought back the thought of the feet together drill. Will this drill work with technology in today's equipment?

Without question this golf drill is still prevalent in today's teaching to fix many different golf swing ailments.

To do this golf instruction drill, address the golf ball for a full swing and simply put your feet together. Once in position, take a few "small" swings with a golf ball on a tee no matter what your handicap is or is not. The more comfortable you become swinging with your feet together the larger swing you can make and eventually place the golf ball on the ground. As you will quickly find with such a narrow balance point, this drill tests and promotes good balance and pace during your golf swing. Your goal is to hit a solid golf shot and not to hit it 300 yards. The feet together drill demands that you swing within your capabilities or you will find yourself literally falling down!

If you are not hitting solid golf shots, do the feet together drill whenever you start to lose confidence in your golf swing. If the golf ball keeps going to the right for a right handed golfer then drop your right foot behind you until the right toe is equal with your left heel and make some swings. This will promote the golf club releasing and in a perfect world, you should start to see the ball turning to the left while in the air.

What To Pack For Golf School

A golf school is a great place to learn how to play the game of golf or to begin the start of the improvement to reach your golfing goals. When you set your golf school expectations make sure to include the plan to sustain your strengths and improve your weaknesses after your time at the golf academy is over. This should be a comprehensive plan for all aspects of your game. Upon you return, you will have a good base or plan to go to work on with your local PGA professional.

So as you are preparing to go a golf school for the first time and are very excited. Since have not been to a golf academy before, what should you take with you so you can enjoy and get as much out of your time at your golf school whether it is one day golf school or a five day school?

Sun Glasses
Sun Block
Comfortable Hat
Band Aids or Athletic Tape
Notepad to Keep Notes
Insect Repellant
Full Rain Suit
Umbrella
Extra Pairs of Socks
An Open Mind

Many of these items on this list may seem pretty simple to you to pack for your trip. However, think back to other trips that you have taken. No mater how prepared you think that you are, there is always something that you leave behind and then you are struggling to find out where to purchase a replacement. Of course it usually happens on a business trip or when you need to be somewhere in a short period of time. By using a simple list like this one, you will be able to organize yourself as you pack for your golf school to make sure that you are prepared to learn and have a great time.

The Top Of The Backswing Is Not Always Parallel!

Although it shouldn't, it still amazes me how many people think that the top of the golf swing is parallel to the ground with every golf club in their bag! Do these people not read or watch any golf at all? Here is the low down on where the top of the golf swing should be:

The first question I would ask is: what club is being used? Swinging a driver to parallel at the top of the golf swing is a different ball game from swinging your nine iron to parallel. Think about it or go to the garage and grab both and try to do it. With the shaft of the nine iron being shorter, the club does not need to get to parallel to achieve maximum results.

The second question would be: are you getting properly coiled or loaded in your golf swing? ON YOUR BACKSWING, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU NEED TO BE PROPERLY COILED OR LOADED. Coiled? Loaded? What does that mean? It simply means that you are stretching muscles away from the target so they will want to move in the opposite direction which should be at your target. Imagine stretching a rubber band. If you do not pull it tight enough, it could go anywhere and not very fast. If you pull it correctly, it moves where you are aiming it and fairly quickly. Finally, if you pull it too far, the rubber band can not handle the tension and breaks. OUCH!

The third question that gets asked is: where do you think the top of your swing is? Ninety plus percent of the time, the student will take the club to parallel. In order to do this, the student will over turn their hips or move their right knee to allow their body to turn far enough to get to parallel. Is this a powerful move? NO! Think about pushing something heavy like a golf cart. Stand away from the cart and attempt to push the cart with your arm(s) extended. Now get closer to the cart and put your weight into it. Is this not easier? It makes it easier to hit a golf ball as well.

Three Quick Golf Tips

All of us are becoming busier and busier. With businesses scaling back the workforce, we have even less time than before for ourselves and our families, let alone with our golf. With this being said, everyone is looking for a quick golf tip.

Quick Golf Tip - Balance is an underestimated part of the golf swing by most amateurs. In your setup, you will need to check your balance from side to side (left to right) as well as from front to back. You can do this by simply swaying side to side until you feel balanced and do the same from front to back. This will allow you to find your perfect balance. Now the key is once this is found you may need to move closer to the ball or farther away from the ball to stay in balance.

Quick Golf Tip - Grip pressure and arm tension is something that all golfers should monitor during every single swing. Your shoulders and your forearms should not feel like they have any tension in them at all. To give you an example, if you take your grip and hold the club out in front of you with the shaft parallel to the ground. If your shoulders and forearms are relaxed enough then the golf club should drop to the ground. This is the feeling of how relaxed your shoulders and forearms should be during your golf swing.

Quick Golf Tip - Once you start playing your round of golf, leave your ego at home and make and aggressive swing at a conservative target. What does this mean? Do not always go flag hunting on every hole. With not playing very often you are not going to hit every shot where you are looking. Increase your chances of playing better by aiming at the largest part of the green or the part of the green you are most comfortable with trying to hit a golf shot.

Golf Lag Training Aids To Hit Solid Shots

Lag in the gofl swing is created when the golf club is being pulled through the impact area as opposed to being pushed through impact.

So now that you have a better understanding about how to achieve lag in the golf swing, what are some golf lag training aids that can help you accomplish obtaining lag and using it to better your golf swing?

Golf Lag Training Aids – Callaway Golf Impact Bag
The Callaway Golf impact bag helps you to create lag in the golf swing and trains you to have a flat left wrist and develops correct muscle memory as well as better precision, swing rhythm and endurance. Practicing your golf swing for fifteen minutes daily using the Impact Bag you will improve you impact position which will lead to better iron shots and longer drives.

Gifts For Birthday Presents - How To Find Them

I do not know if you are like me but twice a year it seems like everybody that I know has a birthday! Every third week in February and every second week in July I have to find a number of gifts for birthday presents in these months. Finding multiple gifts for birthday presents whether it needs to be for a boy or girl becomes tougher and tougher for me. Here are some ideas that I have used to find the perfect gifts for birthday presents and they will help you as well.

To find perfect gifts for birthday presents, go straight to the golfer themselves. Depending on this person is on of your regular golfing partners, you can snoop around their golf bag as you play golf together. Depending on your gifts for birthday present budget, you will be looking to see if they have grooves on their wedges, torn up head covers or paint on top of their driver.

An easy way to purchase gifts for birthday presents is to buy gift certificates for lessons or a golf club fitting. This way they can purchase what ever they like or put it towards a larger purchase. You do not have to worry about if they like it or if it fits because it will be on them.

While rounding up ideas for gifts for birthday presents, few people think to ask the birthday boy or girl's golf professional. He or she can be a wealth of information for you especially if they give your target lessons. Their golf professional should be able to give you a couple of ideas for gifts in various price ranges. To make your experience as easy as poosible, the golf professional might be able to wrap and ship the birthday golf gift, if needed, making it a one stop shop for you. In Addition, you may be able to do this over the phone. Even better!

Golf Shag Bags

Although most golf shag bags are built typically the same way, these practice bags have many different uses. Your short game practice is made easier because all you need to do is grab the top part of the bag by the metal handle that you hold on to as you pick up your balls. Simply position the bottom of the tube on top of the ball and depress the metal or sometimes plastic tube that extends from the bag shaft over the golf ball that you would like to pick up. Once depressed, the ball will load up into the shaft and is secured without ever bending over to pick up a golf ball. The ball will keep moving up the cylinder until it falls into the bag. To recover the golf balls from the bag, simply use the zipper on the side of the bag and empty.

Players fill their golf shag bag with different types of golf balls. Some players fill their practice bags with golf balls that they have found on the golf course. Others who play at a high level go ahead and purchase new balls to use in their practice bags. This may seem a little extreme but these players want to simulate real conditions as much as possible. The other in-between option is to purchase some refurbished golf balls to fill your bag.

Another use of golf shag bags are at country clubs and resorts. Most golf courses have six to ten of these on hand at any one time. This allows their employees to pick areas that the big picker can not reach such as around the flag or near the net that runs down the edge of the driving range. In addition, a golf shag bag allows them to pick balls that are in wet areas that the picker can not run through with out getting stuck or tearing up the turf on the practice facility.

Full Swing Drill - Create Lag

We get asked a lot for a full swing drill to help players create lag in the golf swing. Not many people asking this question even know what lag is or what they are asking us. So, what in the world is lag in the golf swing? Lag in the golf swing is the act of pulling the golf club as opposed to pushing the golf club during the full swing. Why is this important and why would I want to do this? It is important so that you can full swing the golf club in the most efficient manner to gain the most distance while also retaining accuracy.

The best picture that I can give you pertaining to lag is to imagine that you are trying to swing a bucket of water. To keep the water in the bucket, you will start turning your bigger muscles to make it happen. This will allow you to keep the water in the bucket. If you try to use your hands and arms to make this happen the water will start to come out of the bucket and get you wet!

An easy full swing drill that can help you create lag in the golf swing is what I call the gun grip full swing drill. Pick a target and address the golf ball as you normally would. Now for a right handed golfer, take your thumb and index finger of your right hand off of the golf club. Making your thumb and index finger to look like a gun or a pistol will return the best results. Do not get lazy and let these two fingers start to curl back around the grip of the golf club. This will defeat the purpose.

This will feel out of control at first but it has helped many of my students. Pay attention to the golf club at the top of the swing. It should feel like it is dropping and not moving forward. With this you will create lag in your full swing.

Golf Fitness Workout - Why You Need Strong Glutes

Even though many good amateur and professional players now follow a strict golf fitness workout program, many still complain about back pain. Obviously, this can be due to several different things. However, many men suffer from tight hamstrings and weak glute muscles. With tight hamstrings and weak glute muscles, your back must support the upper body during the rotation of the golf swing. The upper body is just not made to make this type of rotational motion and over time will result in back pain. Add the below exercises to your golf fitness workout to strengthen your glute muscles.

THE BACK STEP LUNGE : Start with you standing with your feet together. Keep your chest out and your abs tight and do not slouch forward. Place your hands on your hips or by your sides if you are not using extra weight. Step backward with your left leg. Bend both your knees until your left knee is nearly touching the floor. Your right shin should remain in a straight line with your ankle perpendicular to the floor. Pull yourself forward using the right leg until you're in the standing position again, squeeze your glutes. Then swap legs and perform the exercise again stepping back with your right leg. Remember to stay tight and watch your balance.

BRIDGE WITH AN EXERCISE BALL – Lie down with your back on the floor. Place your feet on an exercise ball with your legs in line with you heels on the exercise ball, you’re your arms across your chest. Keep your legs extended, and thrust up with your hips. Your glutes as well as your hamstrings should be active. Hold this position for five seconds and return your hips to the floor. Depending on your fitness level, do 10 to 15 reps for a set. In addition, place your hands over your head as opposed to across your chest for a variation of the exercise.

Improve Your Drives And Iron Shots

All of us are attempting to improve drives and iron shots. How can we go about it and achieve the best results? Let's talk about how to improve iron shots and drives.

You will need to determine what in your golf swing actually needs work before you get started. You can see your local PGA Pro for a lesson or you may already know what you need to work on to improve the drives or improve iron shots that you hit.

For starters, we suggest taking one idea for your golf posture and one idea for the golf swing. Spread the range balls you are going to hit into groups of five balls each.

With the first group of five golf balls, concentrate only on your golf posture. Only monitor how you do with what you are trying to do with your posture. Do not care too much where the golf ball goes.

With the second group of five golf balls, concentrate only on your golf swing key and/or use a training aid. Do not care too much where the golf ball goes.

With the third group of five balls, forget the other two thoughts and just concentrate on your target. Use your pre-shot routine for each golf swing and change clubs often to replicate playing a round of golf. Repeat this process during your practice session. The third five are important because eventually you will want to take you changes from the practice tee to the golf course to improve drive and improve iron shots.

This third set of practice balls will replicate the process of hitting a golf shot during a round of golf. Chart your progress on a notepad or on your computer. This type of organization will direct you to the proper online golf lessons or golf instruction you need to concentrate on to continually improve your golf game.

Using this approach to improve drives and improve iron shots that you hit will lower your scores and will give you the best results.

Stop Coming Over The Top During Your Full Swing

Are you confused about what your arms are supposed to do in your golf swing? Do you come over the Top when trying to hit a golf ball? The Right Touch is designed to teach you the correct posture and the correct path for your arms to travel on to ensure the most effective golf swing. This golf training aid comes with a velvet pouch with logo and an instructional DVD by Fred Griffin from Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida and Mike Adams.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Right Touch golf swing trainer:

Does the length of The Right Touch probe fit everyone? (Kids, Tall, and Overweight) Answer: YES With the test that we performed on the ModelPro, we were able to determine that the slot position is the same distance away from the body, no matter the shape and size of the golfer. The golfer still has to have the right arm (or left arm for left-handed golfers) come close to the side of the body.

Will I gain distance using The Right Touch? Answer: YES The Right Touch golf swing trainer will teach a golfer to make a correct weight transfer, correct swing path and make a full finish. Implementing these corrections will create increased distance by teaching the golfer to use their body and arms correctly.

I am very overweight - will this golf swing trainer work for me? Answer: YES After testing this golf swing trainer on many different golfers, we found that The Right Touch golf training aid works very well for overweight golfers. Most overweight golfers tend to swing their arms around and over the top of their belly. Using The Right Touch golf training aid, the golfer will learn to clear the hips first so that their arms will swing down the correct swing path.

Where exactly do I put The Right Touch? Answer: The golf practice aid should be placed on your belt line in front of your hip bone, so that when you look down, the The Right Touch Probe points down the center of your thigh.

If I am still pulling the shot or slicing the shot using The Right Touch, what did I do wrong? Answer: You have this golf training aid too close to your belt buckle. The reason that The Right Touch golf training aid works every time is that it can be moved around the belt line to accommodate any amount of slice or pull. Just move the probe further away from the center and more out on the hip. After some practice, you will find the perfect spot on you body to create great shots all the time.

Benefits Of A Weighted Practice Club

The benefits of a weighted practice club include that the extra weight of the weighted practice club will help you build stronger muscles especially in your core or the area also known as the abs. With this you will be able to create more speed and power which will equate to more clubhead speed and more distance with all of your clubs.

In addition, using a heavier practice club will stretch your muscles out as you use it. Meaning as you swing back the extra weight of the weighted practice club will take the club just a hair farther back than you are used to and will stretch the muscles that are needed to get the club into that spot.

Experienced golfers know the importance of practicing their golf swing to engrain feel. They also know that using a weighted golf club adds power and increases the range of motion of your golf swing. The results from using the Club 38 include: Increased distance Fewer injuries More enjoyment of the game! The Club 38 comes with Katherine Roberts Quick Start DVD. "Since incorporating GolfGym products into my fitness programs, I have been able to offer a more effective level of golf-specific training and conditioning to my students." - Katherine Roberts Golf Channel Fitness Expert

Prepare For A Golf Tournament - The How To's

Your club's Match Play or Club Championship is coming up, so how do you prepare for a golf tournament? Granted with your tournament nerves, you are probably not going to be swinging as smooth as Ernie Els when the big day arrives. As you begin to prepare for a golf tournament, that is NOT the time to start changing your golf swing. I repeat. It is NOT the time to make any major golf swing changes.

As you begin to prepare for a golf tournament, remember, this is supposed to be a fun experience. You have created confidence in different areas of your game and now it is time to reap the benefits. You know your own tendencies.

Most of these types of country club tournaments are flighted. This means players with similar handicaps are pitted against each other. What you can do to prepare for a golf tournament is check your golf fundamentals. Review your posture, grip, alignment, and ball position and insure they are in the best shape they can be for your game. Hitting balls is fine but do it to gain confidence and momentum. The most effective thing you can work on is your swing tempo and insuring that your golf swing is in balance. You can do this by simply counting to three once you finish your golf swing.

Since the average of greens hit in regulation on the PGA Tour is only twelve, you will miss some greens during your round. Set up a practice schedule for your short game up until the golf tournament. You can go out in the evenings when the course is quiet. Go from green to green hitting multiple pitch and chip shots from all around the green. In addition, choose a couple of "nasty" lies just in case you hit a good shot that ends up in a bad place. Although the ultimate goal is to hole the ball, sometime you may need to play away from the hole to be able to make the next shot easier.

How To Get It Out Of The Rough

As we are in the heat of the summer and in most parts of the country, the grass is thriving on golf courses, especially in the rough. How do you get out of the rough? This is a very popular question this time of year. Here is how you make this trouble shot easy:

As with any trouble shot, a player's first goal is to get the ball out of the rough. The player's second goal is to get the ball back on the fairway or on the putting green. The player's third goal would be to get the golf ball close to the hole.

The trouble shot you are able play from the rough totally depends on the lie of your golf ball. At this point, you need to ask yourself, "How much grass will be in-between your golf ball and your golf club face." The answer to this question will tell you what kind of trouble shot will be appropriate to use.

The more grass that would come between your ball and the clubface, the higher lofted club you will need to use to get the ball out of the rough. This may mean a club that will not allow you to get all the way to the putting green. Long grass typically has the effect of closing the face of the club which decreases the loft of your clubface. For this reason, the player should use a more lofted club than if the ball were in the fairway.

Around the putting green, the player must again use a more lofted club. Due to the bounce of the club, these shots are custom made for a sand wedge or lob wedge. The effect of the long grass will once again decrease the loft of the club and decrease the spin on your golf ball. The ball will therefore fly lower and run more than if it were in the fairway-cut grass.

The Practice T - Take Dead Aim

Many of the lessons that The Wireless Golf Coach gives, start out by asking the student where they are aiming. It is surprising how many times where they are literally aiming does not match what they tell me. THE PRACTICE T is the golf practice tool that I use to help my student make sure that they can take dead aim. This practice aid allows you to build the perfect setup before every swing that you take on the range.

British Open - When It Is Breezy, Swing Easy

As we are all watching the British Open and watching the wind howl, how in the world do these players like Greg Norman and Padrig Harrington keep control of their golf ball in the wind? Most amateurs underestimate the wind. If a shot is not hit solidly, the wind will have a greater impact on where your golf ball will end up. Since an amateur typically does not hit a shot as solid as a professional golfer, in theory, an amateur's shot is affected more by the wind. Common miss-hits such as a high slice into a wind will get punished and are at the wind's will. A professional will adjust by adding a club for every ten mph of head wind. Logic tells you an amateur will need even more.

Especially off of the tee, it is human nature to think that you would need to swing harder into a head wind. This is where many amateurs make a vital golf swing mistake. Swinging harder, you will have a tendency to miss-hit golf shots. In addition, the harder swing will place more back spin on the golf ball. The backspin will take the golf ball up into the wind, resulting in an uncontrollable loss of distance.

You will find that it will be much more difficult to keep your rhythm and balance while playing golf in the wind. Using an old golf adage will help "When it is breezy, swing easy." Taking more club and swinging smoothly will help get the ball under the wind. Witout as much wind hitting your golf ball the more accurate you should be.

We have customers throughout the US such as Houston TX, Amarillo, Texas, Las Cruces, New Mexico, Palo Alto, California, Jacksonville, Florida, Seattle, Washington, Atlanta, Georgia, San Diego, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

How To Properly Hold A Golf Club

In order to lower your handicap, it is important that you begin with the proper golf grip fundamentals and make sure that you know that you are properly holding the golf club. The golf grip is your only connection to your golf club. The grip is considered a basic fundamental of golf. Bad or wayward shots are often a result of the bad grip that the player uses. The grip is the start to a good golf swing and to the start of you starting lowering your handicap.

Ben Hogan believed that anybody could have a good repeatable golf swing by implementing a few fundamentals and performing them in a proper sequence. Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf written by Ben Hogan is still used by many PGA Golf Professionals as their "bible" of golf instruction. If you have taken a golf lesson, more than likely you have been taught something from Hogan's book.

Ben Hogan is famous for the information on the golf grip that he published in his 1957 classic golf instruction book "The Modern Fundamentals" also known as "The Five Fundamentals." Many instructors still use this information today. This book is a must for any golf library. The Modern Fundamentals: The Five Lessons of Golf was originally presented by Sports Illustrated as a five part series in 1957. This offering was made in a book later that same year. Although it was released in 1957, the book continues to have high sales and is one of the top-selling golf books even today. The book was co-authored by Herbert Warren Wind, and illustrated by artist Anthony Ravielli.

You can also find golf training aids that will help you find the correct golf grip for you at VGS Golf.

Improve With Club 28 If You Are A Junior Golfer Or A Lady Golfer

Because the Golfgym Club 28 (about 1.75 Pounds) are weighted in porportion to a standard golf club. The extra weight makes it easier to keep track of the club head as it pulls you through the impact zone. The GolfGym Club 28 increases your power, flexibility and balance. An exclusive club design distributes the weight like that of a standard golf club with half the total weight in the bottom third of the club. With this weighting you will develop consistency by following the correct swing path. The Golf Gym Club 28 is great for lady golfers and junior golfers.

The Practice T - Golf Training Aids

I am always asked about what the best golf training aids are THE PRACTICE T from Eyeline Golf is one of the golf training aids that I personally use. In addition, I use The Practice T in many of the golf lessons that I give. The Practice T is one of the golf training aids that will help you build the perfect setup for your golf swing. One of the the advantages to The Practice T is how easy to set up and use while you are practicing. You simply secure The Practice T in the ground with golf tees. My favorite part is the fact that you can easily slide the other bar to ensure correct ball position without resetting the entire golf training aid. This makes The Practice T very simple to use. It also includes a mirror so you can ensure your shoulders are aligned properly and this will give you greater control and consistency with every club.
