Heavy Golf Club

We are asked quite often about the effectiveness of a heavy golf club and its use on the practice or in the weight room. Here are five reasons that you should be using a heavy golf club in your golf fitness routine:

1. A benefit of a heavy golf practice club is the extra weight will force you to use more of your core muscles. You will do this not only to swing the club around you but also to keep your balance during the swing. Balance is a very important part of the golf swing that is often overlooked by many golfers and even instructors.

2. It is important that you use a heavy golf club that is weighted proportionately to a real golf club. Just throwing a weight at the end of a golf club is just not the same. As all of the weight is at the far end of the golf club and it feels nothing like what you really swing.

3. Since you cannot really get any more golf specific than using a weighted practice club in your work outs, it is one of the most effective ways to increase your club head speed. Obviously, club head speed has a direct impact on how far that you can hit the ball as well.

4. Although the heavy golf club may only be a couple of extra pounds, the more times that you swing it, you will see a big difference as the extra weight and will help you increase your flexibility The extra weight will make it difficult to stop at the top of your back swing stretching you farther and increasing your flexibility.

5. It is also important to remember to swing the golf practice club both right handed and left handed. If not, you will not be giving equal work to both sides of your body and with one side stronger or weaker than another, an injury may occur.

Golf Training Club

I am doing my usual spring thing to get ready for the golf season. Like most golfers I want to hit it farther off of the tee and I am curious about the benefits of a golf training club. I am finally realizing it may be the Indian and not the arrow. In addition, I really just do not want to shell out the money for a new driver and really have no benefits from it when it is all said and done. Any help?

Here is some advice from an article we wrote on the benefits of a golf training club.

As a Senior Golfer, I am concerned about my distance. It seems like that I have been losing more and more distance over the last few years. Can Golf Fitness Equipment help me? If so, are there any specific pieces of golf fitness equipment that I should use as a senior?

Home Gym

I am looking to set up a home gym. I do not have much money or space for a lot of home gym equipment. Do you have any suggestions on what I would need to have in order to get a full workout and be able to do golf-specific exercises?

Here is a list of the more popular pieces of fitness equipment that many are using in their home gyms today and improving their flexibility and strength. This is allowing them to play more golf and better golf than they ever have before.

Home Gym Equipment – Resistance Cords or Resistance Bands

Resistance cords or resistance bands can give you a great workout. I know it does not look like it but it is funny that every time that I am done with them, I have had a great workout. A great feature of resistance cords is that you can work every single part of your body with them. Also, they are very easy to store at home out of the way if you use a main room to workout. Resistance cords are so small that you can easily pack them for any trip and never have an excuse of I do not have a gym!

Home Gym Equipment – Exercise Ball

This piece of fitness equipment goes by many different names such as: Core Balance Ball, Flexibility Ball and Swiss Ball just to name a few. This is a must have piece of fitness equipment for anyone due to the many uses it can have. Obviously in golf, the core is very important. Doing many exercises on the exercise ball will increase the difficulty and make you use your core. In turn, your core becomes stronger.

Home Gym Equipment – Balance Disks

Adding balance disks to your current workout routine can tone and strengthen core muscles, help posture, improve balance and joint stabilization. You can even use the balance disks by themselves and attempt to make your golf swing with them while staying in balance. Even by making movements in slow motion, the balance disks can help you build your strength which will lead to increased distance and accuracy.

Home Gym Equipment – Weighted Golf Club

A weighted practice club will help you build strength as well as flexibility. Be sure to purchase a weighted golf club that is weighted in proportion to a real golf club and not just a donut on the end of a shaft. With a practice club that is properly weighted you can take VERY slow swings and build muscle. 5 Tips To Find A Golf Fitness Instructor

I want to begin a golf specific workout program. Do you have any tips to find a qualified personal trainer? I want to improve my overall health as well as be able to improve my golf game.

We do have some helpful golf fitness tips for you. The first is do not forget to check with your doctor to make sure there are not any other complications prior to starting a new golf workout program. Other than that here are five tips that should help you find a fitness instructor that will help you achieve your goals.

1. Ask yourself if you will be more comfortable with a man or woman. It seems simple enough. You want to find someone who will listen to you but yet still push you and drive you to find new personal bests.

2. Before you begin looking around, know exactly what you want for your golf fitness. Have a set of golf fitness goals in mind, and find the trainer that will most likely fulfill those goals. Depending on your goals and your budget, you may be able to accomplish this in a class or group setting.

3. Make sure to find a personal trainer with a certification from at least one of the major national organizations, such as the American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, or the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In addition, a personal trainer that has been certified by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is very well trained on how to use golf specific exercises to improve your overall fitness and golf game.

4. Narrow your search. After you have a clear idea, and have checked with the national organizations, find interview the trainers near you. Ask them for references and talk to their past clients. Talk to the trainer themselves prior to training. Understand how you are going to achieve your goals and what it will entail from a time standpoint. Your personal trainer should set up a series of achievable goals – a certain amount of weight lost, a certain amount of repetitions, etc. – or else the workouts will start to feel meaningless, which will lead to a loss of motivation.

5. The trainer selected should have experience with golf-specific training. A golf-specific workout program emphasizes strength, flexibility, and balance and should include each of these aspects in your golf workouts. Each of these categories will not only improve your game, but also help prevent injury.

Golf Fitness Flexibility Program

What should an ideal golf fitness flexibility program consist of?

1) It must offer several golf fitness program variations. A long version for regular training days and a short version for Pre-Round Stretching. A few variations with the large exercise ball should also be included (extremely important for the golfer) along with a couple of club stretches to do just before tee-off & between holes if necessary.
2) It should be thorough - addressing the head and neck all, the way down to the feet. Remember, the golf swing is a full body movement.
3) It must follow a symetrical protocol - the true key to maintaining optimal muscle/tendon/joint balance on both sides of the body. This allows for enhanced golf swing power without a large increase in swing effort. And this is also very important to chronic and acute injury prevention - and hence fitness and playing longevity.
4) It must include several key compound stretches - stretches that elongate several joint areas at the same time - mimicking natural movement patterns. Allowing the golfer to be more accurate through enhanced fitness flexibility, body awareness & control.
5) It must be realistic & easy to do for golfers at any fitness level with no equipment except for a stretching floor mat (and an exercise ball for certain stretches).
6) It must include a series of single or double joint golf stretching exercises. The effects of these stretches increase exponentially when the specific body movement requires several of these joints to move in coordination with each other (ie - the golf swing).
7) It should feel good - especially afterward. This type of stretch routine should make you feel as if your posture and your golf posture is immediately better & you should feel stronger - just because your body moves so much easier & more fluidly. You should almost feel like you could rip the cover off a ball if you were to hit one right after your golf fitness stretch routine.

7 Things That Should Be In Your Golf Fitness Program

Swiss Exercise Ball As A Golf Exercise Ball

A golf exercise ball, also known as a stability ball or a Swiss exercise ball, is an inflatable ball used during workouts as an alternative piece of exercise equipment. Weighted Golf Club

I am looking to improve my golf swing this winter and am interested in learning more about a weighted golf club and what the benefits would be for me.

Here are three benefits:

1. It is important that when are purchasing your weighted golf club that the golf practice aid has the same proportional weight as a regular golf club. Having the weight in proportion to a real golf club will allow the weighted golf club to react more like your real golf club. We are not talking about placing a weighted doughnut around the hosel of the club as this makes the club head end of the club extraordinarily heavy. It is fine to warm up and take a dozen swings to stretch yourself out like this however, I do not recommend using this setup as a full swing practice aid 100% of the time as using this method will not help your golf swing if used for a long period of time due to the improper weighting of the club.

2. As you might expect, a properly weighted golf club will improve your golf game by making you stronger. The extra weight of the weighted practice club will make you use more of your golf muscles than you do in your "regular swing" therefore, building your golf muscles such as your core muscles. I suggest swinging a heavy golf club both right-handed and left-handed in order to keep yourself balanced.

3. The extra weight of a weighted golf club will also stretch you more than you are used to doing in your regular golf swing. The stretching of these muscles will build a larger "range of motion." How To Find A Golf Exercise Book

I am looking to really improve my golf fitness this winter and would like to know if you could recommend how to go about finding a golf exercise book that would help me reach my goals. Is there anything specific that I should look for or avoid in my search? I am middle-aged male and admittedly I am currently not in the best physical shape so I cannot start with a rigorous golf workout program. I would like to attack this project this winter to improve my golf game and my overall health. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As I am watching the PGA Tour players get stronger and stronger and what seems bigger and bigger through golf fitness, I thought that golfers did not need strength training. I as started the game it was ridiculous to think about using golf fitness techniques or more specifically lifting weights to improve your golf game. Golf Exercises - What Should I Do?

As we are getting ready to turn colder in the northern part of the country, I am basically regulated to doing golf exercises to stay in touch with my golf for a few months. What are the golf exercises that I should be doing?

Golf exercises such as balance exercises are beneficial to the golf swing. Knowing the importance of balance in the golf swing, how can we train our body for better balance during our golf swing? A discussion with any top teaching professional will eventually lead to a discussion of balance. You must be balanced at address, the top of your golf swing, through impact and during your finish position. What is balance? Balance is the ability to control your body through a specific movement pattern or your golf swing. In relation to your body, balance has to do with the connection between your nerves and muscles. As a result of messages sent from your brain, your nervous system tells your muscles how to move to maintain the body's balance. The more efficient your nerves and muscles are to these messages, the greater balance abilities the body develops. Balance exercises train both the nervous system and muscular system to create a more efficient golf swing. There are many golf swing aids that will help you with your balance during your golf swing.

Golf Fitness Workout - Why You Need Strong Glutes

Even though many good amateur and professional players now follow a strict golf fitness workout program, many still complain about back pain. Obviously, this can be due to several different things. However, many men suffer from tight hamstrings and weak glute muscles. With tight hamstrings and weak glute muscles, your back must support the upper body during the rotation of the golf swing. The upper body is just not made to make this type of rotational motion and over time will result in back pain. Add the below exercises to your golf fitness workout to strengthen your glute muscles.

THE BACK STEP LUNGE : Start with you standing with your feet together. Keep your chest out and your abs tight and do not slouch forward. Place your hands on your hips or by your sides if you are not using extra weight. Step backward with your left leg. Bend both your knees until your left knee is nearly touching the floor. Your right shin should remain in a straight line with your ankle perpendicular to the floor. Pull yourself forward using the right leg until you're in the standing position again, squeeze your glutes. Then swap legs and perform the exercise again stepping back with your right leg. Remember to stay tight and watch your balance.

BRIDGE WITH AN EXERCISE BALL – Lie down with your back on the floor. Place your feet on an exercise ball with your legs in line with you heels on the exercise ball,you’re your arms across your chest. Keep your legs extended, and thrust up with your hips. Your glutes as well as your hamstrings should be active. Hold this position for five seconds and return your hips to the floor. Depending on your fitness level, do 10 to 15 reps for a set. In addition, place your hands over your head as opposed to across your chest for a variation of the exercise.

Golf Fitness Program - Does Walking Matter?

David Fay on walking during a round of golf, "We strongly believe that walking is the most enjoyable way to play golf and that the use of carts is detrimental to the game. This negative trend needs to be stopped now before it becomes accepted that riding in a cart is the way to play golf."

Walking is the most fundamental part of all golf exercise programs. With this in mind, it makes sense that walking a golf course with a push cart instead of riding in a golf cart would help you to achieve your programs goals. Over the years, there has been much discussion on whether the start and stopping that happens during a round of golf and not all of it has been positive. These people will argue that even with using a push cart, this exercise is not beneficial to your golf even with using a push cart, this exercise is not beneficial to your golf exercise program.

These people must hang out in their lab coats all day and never leave the office or lab. Let's think about this for just a second. In walking an eighteen whole round of golf, you basically are taking a 4-5 mile walk. Hmmm. Not beneficial to a golf exercise program, huh? Keep in mind that most golf courses have many elevation changes up and down and you have extra weight on your back if you choose to carry your golf clubs. The Web site WalkingGolf.com states, "According to Golf Science International, researcher Gi Magnusson calculates that four hours of playing golf (walking) is comparable to a 45-minute fitness class."

Those of you who have walked eighteen holes before know that the round of golf is a different experience than when you ride from shot to shot. Not to sound funny but walking a course gets you closer to the golf course. Not only do I realize the golf exercise benefits of walking a golf course but I have also found that I am able to learn more about a golf course that I have walked as opposed to those that I ride. Walking with a push cart allows you to gain an appreciation for the nuances of a golf course that just are not visible from a golf cart. This is an advantage if this happens prior to a tournament round and it adds to my golf exercise program.

Do You Know What Golf Strength Really Is?

What does the term golf strength really mean? Golf strength is used to describe the golf fitness level of an individual pertaining to swinging a golf club. Golf instruction today has become so mechanical. Even to the point that some instructors teach how to golf swing as opposed to how to play golf. Many of the characteristics of the golf swing are dependent of each other. What does that mean? A new golfer wants a .quick fix. and thinks that since their buddy's lesson was about ball position that it must be what will help them. This is just not true. Ball position is only one part of the equation as is balance, stability, flexibility, strength, and endurance.

You walk into your local health club and wonder "Where should I concentrate my golf exercises?" Some people are so intimidated by all the muscle-heads walking around they sometimes just turn around and walk out of the gym! If you are strong enough mentally to stay what are you supposed to work on? Should you run/walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes? Should you push out a couple sets of bench presses?
