The Mental Golf Game During The Players Championship

With The Players Championship quickly coming upon us, the best players in the world will be challenged physically as well as with their mental golf game on the 17th hole. Although the golf course designer Pete Dye gets all of the credit for creating this golf hole, it was actually his wife Alice that first gave him the idea to create an island green.

Below is part of a golf article the you can find at VGS Golf about what the best players in the world will face while playing this challenging golf hole.

This golf hole is a par three measuring 139 yards from the longest yardage plate on the back tee. So why in the world is this golf hole so well known? Although it is considered a short par three hole by PGA Tour standards, what makes it difficult is the island green, the wind and the pure pressure of the mental golf game.

Although the hole is less than 140 yards, the players' mental golf game is also tested because of the wind. Due to how the golf course is built for the spectators in a "stadium" feel, the wind tends to swirl around and over the green. This just adds one more variable for these top players to put into their mental golf game. In watching this tournament, you will see the best players in the world set up to their golf ball, back off, re-group and try again.

When we say an island green we mean an island. Come to think of it, there is one other little place on this island, a small bunker. These players will test their mental golf game playing the island green and as well as the undulations on the green. The undulation that runs from front to back of the green separates the sliver of green on the right-hand side of the green which has come to be known as hosting the Sunday hole location. Another ridge separates the left and the right of the green making hitting the ball the exact distance with the correct spin. If the pin is in the front, players can hot the green and spin it back into the water! A mental golf game that most are not familiar with at all!

As if the challenge of hitting an island green in a swirling wind is not difficult enough, try adding the strain of the mental golf in a golf tournament at the highest level. You know how nervous you get in your club championship. How nervous would you be playing in what the PGA Tour Players call the 5th major? Oh yeah and hitting a shot in front of 15,000 to 20,000 people there and millions on TV! Recognizing in your mental golf game what these players are going through, you should be nice and relaxed in your club championship this year!
