Putting Drill - Improve Your Lag Putting

After a round of golf when my student's come to me about their putting woes, they want a putting drill to fix the problem. I always ask them the same question to get to the real problem. Did you miss the majority of your putts due to distance or due to direction is the magic question. Typically when answered honestly the answer is due to distance and not direction. Having a putt from 30 feet, the typical amateur will miss that putt more long and short than they will miss the putt from side to side. We head towards the practice putting green a I give my students a simple putting drill to help them control their speed which results in better lag putts and fewer three putts.

The easy putting drill that I give to many of my students to improve the pace of their putts starts with five golf balls and three tees. Stick the tees into the putting surface 20, 30 and 40 feet from a hole. The goal is to putt five balls in a row from each tee to within three feet of the hole. You want to have all five balls stop within the length of your putter from the hole. With most putters being 34 to 36 inches this will give you approximately a six foot circle around the hole.

The trick is to not hit two balls form the same spot. You typically do not have the same length putt twice in a row while on the golf course so why practice it that way? For example, Start at 40 feet, then go to 30 feet and then to 50 feet. This will not allow you to groove any one location and will force you to improve the speed of your putts. The other thing that this putting drill will help you with is as you get the third and fourth ball into the circle the pressure will mount to make a good stroke on the fourth or fifth putt. This is a good thing. Again, this is how it will happen on the golf course.
