Golf Putting - Make More Putts
Everyone has heard the quickest way to lower you scores is to improve your golf putting. As it is more than half of the strokes that you take, golf putting is the most important part of the game. So what is important when it comes to the golf putting stroke? Really, two things are very important, direction and distance.
My students ask me all of the time if direction more important or is distance more important when it comes to the golf putting stroke? Most instructors will tell you that distance is more important on every single putt. I disagree to an extent. Let me explain.
I believe that when golf putting mid to long range putts distance is more important than direction. I use this example with my students when I am giving them a golf putting lesson. If you are attempting a 30-40 foot putt, you are going to tend to miss this putt more short and long with your distance control. Rarely will you miss this putt more right or left than you miss short or long.
Where I differ with most other golf instructors is on a short putt of 3-4 feet. I believe direction is more important as you mind/body or your athleticism will give you the speed that you will need and it is more important that you keep the golf ball started on the correct target line while golf putting.
Go out to the putting green and drop some balls from just 2-3 feet. Your body will know how hard to hit it just concentrate on your line. This will be good for you for a couple of reasons. First, you will get to see if you are starting the ball online while you are putting. Second, you will see the golf ball go into the hole multiple times and you will carry that positive image with you onto the golf course.
Remember, a missed putt will cost you one stroke every single time. You may be able to recover from a bad drive or a less than great iron shot however, that is not possible with a putt. This is why everyone places so much pressure on themselves over those three footers.
