One of the reasons that many of us play the great game of golf is due to the game's never-ending challenge. Playing in the wind is one of the many challenges that golf can throw at you during a single round of golf.
Some players absolutely love it when the wind starts blowing and others fall like a house of cards. Why is that? Those players that do well playing in the wind are able to use the following five tips:
Golf Equipment I know this sounds funny, but as you are playing in the wind, many times the weather also changes during your round. If it rains you will need to have your rain gear with you with should include your rain suit and umbrella. You will also want to make sure that you take plenty of towels just in case it does begin to rain. If the wind is blowing hard enough, you may need an umbrella just to keep the wind off of you.
Accept it Yes, it is as easy as it sounds. Accept that the wind is blowing or even howling. Let me give you a little secret here that most players who do not playing in the wind forget is that the entire field has to deal with the same conditions. So, accept it. Many better players have said that they like the wind to blow because a large portion of the field is already beat because they beat themselves in the mental game. Do not be in that group.
Bad Shots This hint relates to the previous tip on playing in the wind. When the wind blows hard, you are going to hit some bad shots or should I say marginal shots that become bad shots due to the wind. Again, this will happen to everyone in the field. Relax and hit the best shot that you can. You need to do this especially into the wind as any mistake that you make will be magnified into the wind.
Make A Decision You will need to make a very clear decision when playing in the wind on what you are going to do on the next shot. You need to clearly decide on the shot shape. Do you need to keep it under the wind or hit it higher to ride the wind? Are you going to move it back into the wind or float with the wind? These decisions have to be made in order to pull the correct club to hit.
Commit Once you have made your decisions you must commit to them all of the way through the swing. If at any point your mind wonders if you are doing the right thing during your pre shot routine or as you are over the golf ball, stop. Simply back off and start all over.
By implementing the five tips above, you will be better suited to playing in the wind. Remember, they do not ask you how you did it on the score card, they just want to know how many.
