Lose The Chicken Wing In Your Full Swing

All sports have their own terminology. Golf is simply no different. When the top golf instructors are on the television they will sometimes talk about a chicken wing during a full swing. How do you go about fixing a chicken wing in the golf swing? Here are the answers for you.

Believe it or not, fixing a chicken wing may be easier than you may think. When this happens during a golf swing typically there are a couple of things going on in the swing.

First of all the chicken wing is a result of having too much tension in your left shoulder blade and left arm. Here is an easy golf drill that will give you the correct feeling.

To get started, place a tee in the ground as you would for a tee shot on a par three without a golf ball on it. Take your grip and your stance with an eight iron and make a swing at the tee. With a chicken wing, you will probably have a hard time hitting the tee and you will swing above the tee. To lose the chicken wing, relax your left shoulder (including the whole shoulder blade area) and repeat until you can hit the tee. You will notice the tension in your left shoulder and arm will be much less than what is was on the previous swings when you missed the tee.

For example place the club on the ground and take your golf grip. Now tense your shoulders. What happens to the golf club? It comes up, right? This is because your muscles have tightened. When your muscles tighten they become shorter and raise the club off of the ground. You now have to find a new path to get back to the golf ball and unfortunately this is impossible to do on a consistent basis thus, inconsistent golf shots.

Once you can hit the tee a couple of times in a row, now place a ball on the tee. The "game" has not changed. You are still going to try to make the tee come out of the ground. Once you are able to hit the tee with a ball on it, you will be amazed at how little effort is needed to move the golf ball.

The other part of this is that you are more than likely not rotating to the target on the forward swing. On a practice swing, swing through to your finish and rotate so that you come up on your right toe (assuming you are right handed). Once in the finish position you should be able to count slowly to three without falling out of balance. The "game" here is to hide all of your spikes from the flag or target. This will force you to rotate.

This is a lot of info on how to fix a chicken wing so take it a piece at a time and let us know how it goes for you. Hopefully, the weather is good for you and you can try to implement these principles on a driving range today!
