There is one constant with all lower handicap golfers. All have been through a golf club fitting and own a properly fitted golf clubs (sticks). As golfers come in all sizes and shapes, it is important to match your body type and swing to your golf equipment. A set of properly fitted golf irons or woods makes the game much easier as you do not have to manipulate the club as much.
Local Golf Shops are stocked with the manufactures standards. Due to the many different body types, sales reps have stated that these standards fit approximately ten percent of golfers. Most golfers purchasing a set of irons measure into an upright lie angle. In addition, most golfers are measured into a longer or shorter golf shaft than the standard offering.
The PGA Professional will be factoring in all of the following to determine the correct club for you: your clubhead swing speed, distance from your wrist to the floor, skill level or handicap, how often you get to play, proper grip size.
There are different club standards for men and women. Typically, the men are fit with a six iron and ladies with a seven iron. Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine which length to start the fitting process. Once the correct length is found, the majority of your impacts on the face tape should be in the center of the club face.
Depending on which clubs you are getting fitted for, the process can vary in length. If you are going to fit every club in your golf bag it could take two or more hours to do the club fitting properly. An experienced instructor will break this into multiple sessions. This will keep your fresh. You do not want to be club fitted while tired.
Fees for a golf club fitting will vary from golf shop to golf shop. Many golf shops will include any fees with the purchase of the products from that same golf shop. Those that do charge a fee will sometimes charge their regular lesson rate and some have a specific fee. Make sure you ask prior to your appointment.
Knowing you have a properly fitted set of irons and woods will make it easier for you to make a better golf swing and lower your scores.
