Why are par fives so easy for professional golfers and difficult for amateurs? The answer is easy. Professionals employ golf course management. The four par fives are usually the lowest rated handicap holes on a golf course. This is due to the rating system and it is set up to rate longer holes as more difficult because a higher handicapper is more likely to make a mistake.
Do not become intimidated by this. Depending on your ability and course management skills, you can turn a par five into one of the easier golf holes to beat on the golf course by making good shot decisions. Many golfers of varying handicaps become intimidated when faced with a long hole. Just because it is a long hole does not mean that you need to swing harder than on other holes. However, many golfers put this type of pressure on themselves and it results in making a big number. Even though the hole may be longer, remember you have an extra golf shot to make par. This should allow you to throw away the notion of power golf and play for position instead. Even if your maximum drive is 200 yards, you should be able to reach most par fives in four shots and be able to two putt for a bogey or one putt for a par.
Low handicappers suffer by trying to hit the big drive so in turn, they will be able to .go for it. on their second shot. Even when they do .catch. a good drive, the second shot is a risky one and trying to make an eagle they walk off the putting green with a high number on their score card.
Although making an eagle is glorious, eagles are few and far between on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour. Your goal for your second shot is to take the lowest-risk golf shot which leaves the easiest third shot. Your decision may include going for the putting green. If so, you should be targeting the largest playing area on the putting surface and not necessarily at the golf hole. If you lay up, lay up. Position your golf ball at a distance that you are comfortable with for your third shot. This will also depend on the hazards on the golf hole. If your favorite yardage is eighty yards and this is where a bunker is placed, then you will want to lay up behind the bunker. Again, pick a comfortable yardage.
